We had the privilege of spending a long weekend at The Datai Langkawi earlier this month. Prior to our stay here, we have heard so much (good things of course) about The Datai Langkawi from friends and colleagues and I have to say that our stay at this luxury hotel far exceeded our expectations.
Right from the moment we checked into the hotel, the receptionist brought us cold drinks and cold towels. Within seconds, the check in process was completed and we were being ushered to our room.

Over The Datai Langkawi’s many years of being in business (the hotel is celebrating its 20th annivesarry this year), it has earned numerous awards and accolades from all kinds of places. It is also one of the leading hotels of the world.

The Datai is 30 minutes by car from the island’s international airport, which is 20 kilometers west of Pulau Langkawi’s main town, Kuah. Being far from town has its perks; as The Datai Langkawi is surrounded by ancient virgin rainforest and facing the pristine beaches of the Andaman Sea.

We were being told that the hotel is built on a cliff, amidst the lush greeneries. Sitting here and unwinding with a chilled glass of wine is a luxurious way to get close to nature.

There is a lily-pond located next to the lobby bar. It was beautiful and the frogs and toads always make their grand appearances in the evenings.

There are two swimming pools in the hotel; the one near to main building and facing the rain forest is strictly for adult while the one near to the beach is kids friendly.

Some other facilities includes two tennis courts, a health club with plunge pool, sauna, gym equipment with flat screen TV, a spacious meeting room for up to 25 people, gift/souvenir shops, etc.

We really appreciate the hotel’s classic movies selection in which guests can borrow for free.

There is also spa featuring massage, herbal baths, facials and scrubs located under the rainforest canopy and next to the stream.

We stayed at the most “basic” Deluxe Room but it was nothing “basic” at all! It is 62.5 square metres in size and the combined bedroom and living room contain a king-size bed, private bar with coffee and tea-making facilities, writing desk, LCD flat screen television, a daybed and an out-door balcony with a view of the rainforest. The king size bed was truly comfortable.

Apart from the complimentary fruit basket, the house keeping left a Rainforest Times newsletter at our desk every morning. It features highlights of the day, activities available, weather forecast and even recipes from the resort’s restaurants. This is just one example of the level of attention to details at the resort.

The spacious bathroom and dressing room feature his and hers sinks, shower cabin, toilet, bathtub and ample luggage space. The rain shower and bath are both big enough for two.

We also helped ourselves with the complimentary non-alcoholic minibar (beverages only). It was a nice touch added!

As a coffee lover, I particularly enjoyed the Lavazza espresso machine!

We got the opportunity to visit other room types at The Datai Langkawi – superior villa, corner & end suites and beach villa. The two bed-room beach facing villa boasts of 475 square metres in space. The bed room opens up to a superb 10 metre private pool.

The Datai Langkawi caters a wide range of activities such as jungle walk (morning and evening) and beach walk for nature lovers. We woke up early to take a nature walk through the rainforests with a resident guide pointing out interesting aspects of the natural setting and local wildlife.

It was a great learning experience as we know more about Langkawi’s rain forest after the guided walk.

Macaques is a common sight at the hotel ground as they are not afraid of human and they are great in stealing food from mini bar! Guests are advised to keep their sliding doors closed at at time. We also spotted the dusky-leaf monkeys a few times. They were really shy and we always commented that these are the sun tanned monkeys. During the morning jungle walk, we saw a plethora of other rainforest inhabitants from hornbills, squirrels to snakes and wild boars.

We also enjoyed going down the grand staircase and walking in the rainforest to reach the pristine beaches.

As The Datai ground is spanning across a 40+ acres land, buggy service is provided upon request.

The kids friendly pool is located near to the beach.

Usually after breakfast, we found ourselves reclining on sun beds by the beach with mocktails and coconut drinks by our sides. It was pure bliss!

The private beach boasts calm, clean waters, and the sand is soft.

To protect the surroundings from pollution, only non motorised sports are allowed here.

KampungBoy & KY getting ready to hit the water!

The beach is a great spot to view sun set.

KY and Haze took a romantic stroll along the beach. We were indeed honoured to witness KY’s surprise proposal at The Datai! Congratulations to the sweetest couple in the blogsphere!

To our pleasant surprise, we got to enjoy a midnight soak with uninterrupted views of the star-filled sky here!

The Datai Langkawi also offers a nightly turn down services. I love coming back to the room in the evening and having the bed-covers turned down, chocolates by the bed side and a sweet note left by the team.

We could not recommend The Datai Langkawi enough. It is a great romantic getaway for us. The resort is secluded, nestled in a tropical rainforest leading down to a beautiful beach. We have experienced nothing but great services throughout our stay here. Even the food at different dining venues across the resort did not dissappoint! Will share more in our next post.
