Twas the season to enjoy white asparagus, hualalalalala…
White asparagus, also known as the vampire of the vegetable world, makes a brief appearance every spring. We considered ourselves lucky because from now until 30th June 2015, one can enjoy this delicate spring delicacy imported from France at Gobo Upstairs, Traders Hotel KL.
Sous Chef Kelvin Kilin and his team came out with a carefully crafted menu that combines the white asparagus with a variety of exquisite ingredients.
For starters, one can pair the white asparagus with egg (RM38), air dried beef (RM45) or smoked salmon (RM46). We opted for White Asparagus with Smoked Salmon and there were no regrets. The white asparagus was tender and it’s mellow taste was enhanced by a myriad of ingredients such as smoked salmon, black caviar, shaved Parmesan, mascarpone cheese and drizzled with an orange reduction.
Chicken Consomme (RM35)
For soup, we chose the chicken consommé, a lighter alternative to the thick and creamy velotte. Accompanied by poached white asparagus, carrots, celery and green asparagus together chicken dumplings, it might seem light and insubstantial but big on flavour. It provided such a magnificently clear depth of flavour that we licked even the last drop of consommé clean.
Atlantic Cod Fish (RM 108)
Served with white and jumbo asparagus, crustacean sauce, leek and caramelized onions; the dish looked and tasted good! The cod was being pan fried to perfection, yielding a crispy skin and delicate, flaky flesh. One of the best cod I’ve had in a while!
KampunBoy the meat lover opted for the 150 days grain fed Black Angus Rib Eye (RM170), which is served with white and jumbo asparagus, pomme puree, truffle essence and Bordelaise sauce. It turns out a beautifully juicy, medium-rare steak, with crisped and crunch edges, and so much flavour!
Frozen Hazelnut Ice Globe (RM 28).
Even the desserts in Gobo Upstairs exceeded our expectations. Everyone loves cake and everyone loves ice cream — but I have not seen anything like these beauts before! Served with morello cherries and vanilla anglais, the hazelnut ice globe that came in a cake form had us fooled for a while. We loved the icy, melt in your mouth texture so much.
The Chocolate Lave with vanilla bean ice cream (RM 30) is a signature in Gobo Upstairs. It was a love at first bite. The warm, gooey chocolate center oozes out onto the plate. So good!
Thank you Gobo Upstairs for such an enjoyable dinner. Gobo Upstairs is probably one of the most underrated fine dining restaurants in KL as it hardly pops into one’s mind when you mention fine dining. The White Asparagus promotion is available until 30 June 2015, during dinner service only. Make your reservation now!
