BreadFruits Café @ Desa Sri Hartamas

There are not many eating places in KL where you can walk in and immediately feel like part of one big family. I discovered one of these places a few weeks ago. It’s called BreadFruits Cafe in Desa Sri Hartamas. It is a bakery-cum-fruit seller-cum-café that serves natural, healthy food. Bukit Tinggi free range egg, arugula, cannellini beans, wild honey, locally planted fruits are available for sale here.

I was introduced to the cafe by my colleague and we were here on a busy Saturday afternoon. Every nook and corner of the café was filled with families and senior citizens, couples and kids, and the atmosphere were lively and happy.

We started off with the wild honey and passion fruit drink (RM9.90) while waiting for our friends to arrive. The tropical taste of the passion fruit, mixed with wild honey, was refreshing and tangy.

My cup of flat white (RM8) was decent, but nothing to shout about.

I think I found a favourite spot for carbonara in town – BreadFruits Café’s version of brunch pasta with 7-minute egg (RM16.80) hit the spot. The pasta was cooked al dente in a light carbonara sauce with mushrooms, tomatoes, bacons, rocket leaves. This dish relies on the perfect soft boiled eggs that gives it a smooth and luscious sauce and tastes a great deal lighter than a restaurant version.

It is always a delight to order the roasted banana bacon french toast with passion wild honey (RM18.80) here. It is a healthier version of French toast as the rye bread toasts, lightly coated with egg, was baked in the oven without any traces of oil! Topped with caramelised bananas, bacons and cinnamon sugar, it is the perfect marriage of sweet and savoury. Drizzle some honey passion fruit concoction for that sweet, tangy aftertaste.

Feeling greedy, we also ordered the gourmet antipasto breakfast platter (RM25.8) that comes with coffee/tea and juice of the day. It was a platter filled with goodies such as prosciutto, salami Milano, chorizo and aged cheeses like brie and cheddar; strawberry grape olive salad, a 7-min egg and served with toasted ciabattas.

I just love a nice, fresh, simple salad. And the unique nutty and peppery bite of arugula is so fantastic, especially paired with a light citrusy dressing.

I like how BreadFruits Cafe focuses on serving simple, honest and genuine food using locally sourced ingredients. Healthy food doesn’t have to compromise on taste here. Service was warm and friendly. We will definitely be back for more!
