Ask any KLite where to get good roti canai and they will most probably point you to Raju’s or Valentine Roti. We tried both recently and we like Valentine Roti better.
Located opposite Wisma Celcom at Jalan Semarak, Valentine Roti is a no-frills roadside stall that has been around for almost two decades. You cannot miss the bright yellow signboard that claims it serves the best roti canai in town.
It was a little after nine in the evening when we arrived on a Saturday evening but almost all the tables were filled with hungry patrons patiently waiting for their roti canai.
We started off with some hot and frothy teh tarik (RM1.30 each) as we both knew that our food was going to take a while.
I ordered my favourite roti kosong garing (RM1.20) while KampungBoy went for the roti valentine. The paper-thin roti kosong was incredibly light and crispy. It was almost grease-free and the roti remained flaky even after I dipped it onto the dhal, sambal ikan bilis and curry sauce served on the side. It was so good that we ordered another two.
The Roti Valentine (RM4.50) is a must-try here. The roti layer was thin and crispy, and filled with myriad ingredients – sardine, onions and mixed vegetables. I like the fact that there was a good amount of crunchy vegetables and the spicy sardine gave it an extra kick.
Feeling greedy, we asked the Indian owner for more recommendations. That was how we ended up with the roti potato (RM4.50). It is actually Roti Valentine version 2.0, with mashed potatoes cooked in dhal curry added. We were left wondering how these paper-thin layers managed to hold such a thick filling. Needless to say, it was very delicious.
Valentine Roti definitely lives up to its reputation for serving the best roti canai in KL. For RM15, it is one of our most satisfying suppers to date!
