Apart from the overrated Ibu Oka Babi Guling, Bebek Bengil that is well-known for its crispy fried duck is another eating establishment located in Ubud, Bali. We made it a point to drop by towards the end of our holiday in Bali.
The name Bebek Bengil/Dirty Duck has made it big across the region and internationally but have you ever wondered what does the name means? Well here’s the story extracted from the menu’s front page.
“One tropical monsoon morning, when the restaurant was very close to being finished ( we had the concrete floor down, and the tables in ), a flock of ducks from the rice field across the road ( yes, there were rice fields all around us then ) ran quacking and squawking into the restaurant and across the floor and tables. They left muddy webbed footprints all over the place. They were our first guests – those dirty ducks !”
The place is huge – with an outdoor garden nicely lit and a two- story Octagon Villa that fits 80 pax.
We booked in advance for the best spot in one of the huts by the rice fields. The whole alfresco dining experience is great! We got to enjoy the lovely evening breeze while listening to the vague background of traditional Balinese music.
Let’s feast!
We just have to try their signature dish – the Bebek Bengil/Crispy Duck (rp.68,000 / MYR25.00) after hearing so much about it. It was well marinated and the duck was so crispy that you can eat the bones along. However, we found some part of the duck to be a tad too dry and requires some jaw exercises.
There are a few dishes that need to be ordered a day in advance and the Balinese Smoked Duck (rp.187,000 / MYR68.00) is one of it. The sizeable set came with half a duck, side vegetables, satay with peanut sauce, white rice, onion dippings and chili sauce.
The Balinese Smoked Duck gets our votes. The herbal marinate is loaded with flavour, and seeps into the duck meat really well. The meat is so tender that it literally falls off the bone when you bite into it. The huge portion can also easily feed 3 person even though it was originally meant for 2 (according to the wait staff).
a great dish of “bumbu bali” (translated as spice blend, of authentic traditional Balinese cuisine)
Bebek Bengil is an absolutely beautiful restaurant. Though there is some hits and misses on the food, the low lighting and lovely decor make this a place to remember.
