Here’s a short post to end the week. Happy holiday everyone!
Have you ever been to Asian Avenue @ Sunway Pyramid? Other than the blasting music and pops of colourful fashion statement that spells “YOUNG”, it is a food paradise, a snack paradise to be precise.

Local snacks? Korean snacks? Yokomon ice cream? We settled into this little stall known as Formosa instead. We had a Taiwanese Fried Chicken Set that comes with a separate serving of lu rou fan (braised pork with rice) and zhen zhu nai cha (bubble milk tea). The lu rou fan was quite a pleasure to the palate; imagine soft fluffy rice drizzled with greasy braised meat gravy. The simplest and tastiest dish ever! However, the Taiwanese fried chicken was a HUGE disappointment, even Uncle Bob’s fares better. Boney, tough and dry, we left it untouched after a few bites.

Our order of Da Chang Bao Xiao Chang (Taiwanese Sausage with Glutinous Rice) is delicious! Sweet chewy Taiwanese sausage and slightly salty glutinous rice were such perfect match.
Total damage? RM 12 if I recall it correctly. With some hits and misses, I wouldn’t mind a revisit considering the reasonable pricing, especially at “time like this”. Oh maybe no? THE Government is confident that Malaysia will not slip into a “technical recession” anytime soon. What’s your take on this?

Sorry for the long hiatus. We were busy preparing for our papers, which is a lengthy and arduous process.
Let us get started on Hing Loong, a Taiwanese noodle shop at Damansara Uptown. It originates from Malacca and one of the partner’s mum happens to be a Taiwanese.

Chilled Tofu with Chicken Floss (RM 4.90). The tofu has a slight sour taste and the gravy is too salty for our liking.

Szechuan Spicy Beef Noodles (RM 6.00). Apart from chunks of beef, a generous serving of beef tendon and noodles are seen. However, there was a distinct lack of wow factor.

We also tried out the signature dish – Shanghai Deep Fried Pork Chop Noodles (RM 5.50). I used to frequent their Malacca outlet for this. The noodles, made of soy bean, are smooth and chewy while the deep fried pork is flavorful and tender. An extra order of the deep fried pork (RM 3.50) was ordered to satisfy our cravings.
We reckon that only the signature Shanghainese Deep Fried Pork Chop Noodles is good and worth trying. With the reasonable pricing and attentive services, we wouldn’t mind dropping by for a quick fix.

Do you still remember these baoz? It was once widely circulated via emails that we can only stare at it. The good news is the franchise that created a baoz craze in Taiwan is now at Pavillion KL and Time Square KL!
One can choose from their royal delicacy series, chocolate series, crispy series, snowflake series and steamer series (RM 2.50 to RM 3.50). To make my selection easier, I choose two “3 in a pack” box set. There are champion box (12 best selling baoz) and half dozen box (diamond box, platinum box and sweet heart box) too.

From top left: Crispy Taro Baoz, Tri Star Squid Roll, Sweet and Sour Fish Bao, Curry Mutton Steam Baoz, Onion Baoz, Crispy Sesame Baoz

The tri star squid roll and sweet sour fish baoz are among my favourite while most of it tasted like any other ordinary baos. With reheating make easy and possible, it does make a perfect gift to family and friends. However, a non bao fanatic like me will not join in the queue just for a baoz or two.
With added modernity to traditonal baos, I’m seeing that these gorgeous looking baoz will soon take over Malaysians’ heart and beat the current donuts craze.

This is a very dated post where my ex colleagues had a little get-together few months back. Spurred by all the positive reviews on Fong Lye that I’ve read , I suggested dinner here.

The menu is quite extensive, one can choose from snacks, noodles, rice or the standard set meals that comes with a platter of three appetisers, a bowl of rice with minced pork and a small bowl of soup which varies from day to day.

My oolong milk tea tastes exactly like oolong tea + milk tea. One needs a little bit of acquiring when it comes to this Taiwanese drink.

Jasmine tea in cute porcelain teapot set, and the refills of hot water is unlimited.
A standard set meal.
Platter of appetizers.
Soup of the day.

Served in a flat wok over small fire, the three cup chicken set arrives piping hot. It sure does smell aromatic, with the basil leave and soy sauce. However, my ex colleague can’t even bring herself to whip everything off as the slightly burned sauce was bitter.

The chef recommendation item, Fried Fish Fillet with Tomato and Fried Egg is one of the best things that we have come across that night. Slightly tangy and sweet, it is a very appetizing dish.

My other ex colleague reckons that her Taiwanese Fried Chicken was OK but nothing fantastic.

Taiwan rou yuan/meat ball (RM 5.80) is hidden beneath the thick layer of sticky dough, just like how they served it in Taiwan. It must be eaten hot; else the dough layer would gets disgustingly gummy.

The taiwan coconut milk toast (RM 3.90) with some great aroma of coconut is dipped in rich layers of butter and milk and sautéed until crisp and brown.

The sweet potato balls (RM 4.80) are nothing like my favorite stall at Petaling Street. Instead of having a crispy outer layer and mushy soft content, it was chewy and airy. With more misses than hits in our order, we can’t seem to understand what’s the hype about Fong Lye? Guess the golden formula of perpetual long queue + good crowd = good food is not always true and can’t be applied at all time. Any reasons to return? It has to be their attentive services and comfy ambiance and toasts.J
