Formosa Taiwanese Restaurant @ Sunway Pyramid

Here’s a short post to end the week. Happy holiday everyone!
Have you ever been to Asian Avenue @ Sunway Pyramid? Other than the blasting music and pops of colourful fashion statement that spells “YOUNG”, it is a food paradise, a snack paradise to be precise.

Local snacks? Korean snacks? Yokomon ice cream? We settled into this little stall known as Formosa instead. We had a Taiwanese Fried Chicken Set that comes with a separate serving of lu rou fan (braised pork with rice) and zhen zhu nai cha (bubble milk tea). The lu rou fan was quite a pleasure to the palate; imagine soft fluffy rice drizzled with greasy braised meat gravy. The simplest and tastiest dish ever! However, the Taiwanese fried chicken was a HUGE disappointment, even Uncle Bob’s fares better. Boney, tough and dry, we left it untouched after a few bites.

Our order of Da Chang Bao Xiao Chang (Taiwanese Sausage with Glutinous Rice) is delicious! Sweet chewy Taiwanese sausage and slightly salty glutinous rice were such perfect match.

Total damage? RM 12 if I recall it correctly. With some hits and misses, I wouldn’t mind a revisit considering the reasonable pricing, especially at “time like this”.  Oh maybe no? THE Government is confident that Malaysia will not slip into a “technical recession” anytime soon. What’s your take on this?

So there is this place at Sunway Pyramid that makes me give little shrieks of “Kawaii Neh” like those Japanese school girl wannabes. The decor shouts cute and cheerful all at once and the pink white green colours are even mirrored in the little ice cream cups.

Probably realizing that RM6.90 for a scoop of ice cream is beyond the reasonable range, they are now having a promotion where you can get a single scoop at RM 5.50.

Students from Taylors, Sunway, Monash, KDU, etc are given an even cheaper rate at RM 5.00.

“But I’m not from those colleges, so not fair!”, I told the staff, of the other species with soft ears (that are easier to pour lies into) obviously.

“Hmm, so you are still doing college? I’ll give you the student rate then.”I felt bad for conning my way for a mere 50 cents.

Come to think about it, 50 cents can buy me half a sugus bar or a cup of chinese tea ice. I felt better instantly. We picked matcha and goma. First, the staff took out a small round tub with slabs of frozen ice cream and placed it in a special compartment of the machine.

After some winding action, the frozen ice cream comes out in pretty swirls. Other than matcha (green tea), goma (black sesame), they have azuki (red bean), ichigo (strawberry), daku choko (dark chocolate) and ramu reezun (rum raisin), with matcha, ichigo and daku choko being the most popular flavor. The ice cream turned out soft and creamy after some compressing actions in the machine. I would definitely return to try the other flavours, all of them.

Pasta de Gohan @ Sunway Pyramid

pasta de gohan

With branches scattered around Central, Marina Square, Orchard, Katong and East Coast, Paste de Waruku is definitely not something new for the Singaporeans and some Malaysians. However, I was pretty excited to find out that a spin off of Pasta de Waruku, Pasta de Gohan is opening their doors on the 9th of May but only manage to drop by one week after with fellow floggers. With a wide window display showcasing various plastic replicas of the 72 types of pasta found in their menu, our orderings are made easier.

funky interior

We were greeted with a bright, colorful and cheerful space, with white walls adorned with pictures of pastas and more plastic replicas of food as well as country style wood tables and chairs. Tables are comfortably separated, and the Japanese soft ballads playing in the background help set the mood for a casual and relaxed dining experience.

We sat down, ordered our beverages, and began flipping through the menu. The menu is very extensive but we have no problems on settling down on a final choice because it is a pictorial menu with descriptions.

“Garlic or no?”
“Spagethi or
Fettuccini?”
The staff will ask for each pasta dish ordered.

“Thank you for waiting”
The staff will thank you whenever your food is served.

Spicy Cod Roe and Potato Pizza with Mayonnaise (RM 20.80)

A pizza was ordered to satisfy the primordial hunger. The paper thin pizza topped with potatoes and spicy cod roes arrived in a rather cute wooden board. Slightly crispy, just enough so that you can hold it up without it flopping over, the pizza has won our heart. However, I find it a tad too expensive because for RM 20++ , the pizza if not filling at all, even If you chow down the whole pan.

P1240393

Japanese Style Doria with Scallop and Chicken (RM 26.80)

Doria, loosely translated as rice gratin, features a bed of rice covered with cream-simmered prawns and scallops with gratin sauce. Just like our Hong Kong Char Chan Teng cheese bake rice, it is nothing fantastic.

squid ink pasta

Japanese Original Sauce – Spaghetti al Nero de Sepia (RM 28.80)

Lo and behold! Visually unappetizing to some, the pitched black squid ink pasta is actually very good. Cooked al dente, the fettuccini give just enough bite to this dish and to my relief, the iodine taste of squid ink is not prominent at all. However, the girls are extremely cautious in their every move to avoid unsightly squid ink stain.

P1240418 copy

Japanese Style Original Cream Sauce – Lobster Cabonara (RM 36.80)

Another not to be missed pasta dish is the Lobster Carbonara. Priced below RM 40, it is quite a value for money because you are served with half a lobster! The sweetness of the lobster has attested to its freshness.

P1240416 copy copy

Japanese Style Original Cream Sauce – Oyster and Bacon Carbonara (RM 25.80)

Initially it sounds like a somewhat strange combination to pair oysters with bacons and pastas, but heck, they taste beautifully together. Fresh, plump oysters bursting with salt-of-the-sea brine scent are further enhanced by strips of crispy greasy bacons and curly ringlets of pasta.

P1240410 copy

Japanese Original Sauce – Katsu Tamatoji (RM 25.80)

Back to Basic. Good ol’ Katsudon with fried breaded pork cutlet, beautiful runny eggs, savory sweet sauce, minus the rice. Maybe the escalating price of rice has prompted them to substitute it with pasta? Who’s complaining because it’s lip smackingly good.

P1240407 copy

Japanese Original Sauce – Eel and Egg (RM 23.80)

Again, this is another variation of missing rice from the usual Unagi Tendon. I’m complaining this time, if only more chunks of unagi are given.

P1240396 copy

Japanese Style Basil Sauce – Prawn and Octopus (RM 28.80)

A luscious concoction of pasta and seafood drenched in their home made basil sauce – was delectable.

P1240440 copy

Macha Azuki Parfait (RM8.80)

P1240438 copy copy

Ichigo-Milk Parfait (RM8.80)

P1240435 copy copy

Tiramisu Parfait (RM10.80)

P1240425 copy

Oreo Banana Parfait (RM8.80)

P1240429 copy copy

Shiratama Macha Monaka Ice Cream (RM7.80)

Desserts are unabashedly simple but delicious. The parfaits are basically the same soft ice cream, line with cornflakes and topped with different flavors according to your order. I find the Shiratama Macha Monaka Ice Cream served in a wafer shell cute. It’s nice to have a little chewy bite with sweet azuki bean paste and ice cream.

When a new restaurant opens up, you can be sure they have put a great deal of time and effort into the establishment. With attentive services and delicious pasta dishes, Pasta de Gohan is one of the most appealing restaurants and is perfect for a casual dining out. It was nice meeting up with BBO, Christine, Aiwei and Jennifer again too!

Jack’s Place @ One Utama & Sunway Pyramid

I still remember vividly that me and my cousins had a great time at Jack’s Place Singapore few years back. I never get to try them since their arrival in Malaysia because there is always other choices when it comes to dinner at One Utama.

<a onblur=”try {parent.desSo, I finally step my foot into this place. Jack’s Place mingles ambience to great applauses. It was bright, clean and cosy. Yellow lighting makes a perfect setting for ’sexy’ food pictures.

I pay RM 6 extra for a soup of the day, coffee and dessert during dinner time. My brocolli and carrot soup tasted more like a MSG laden soup with teeny weeny bits of greens and oranges.

Munlin was craving for some juicy steak but she was too greedy to settle with just beef, so she opted for the mixed grill. (RM 30) You get a taste of everything: bacon, steak, lamb, chicken, sausage and sunny side up. The lamb was overcooked that she finds it hard to sink her tooth on it.

Chicken Mushroom Spaghetti (RM 14) that Lee Ping had was cooked to perfection. The spaghetti was tossed together with the creamy sauce and topped with some grilled chicken and musroom. She gave two thumbs up for her dish.

My boneless chicken (RM 18) was tender and juicy but the sauce was a bit bland that chilli sauce comes to handy here.

Yiquan had spring chicken with sambal sauce. (RM 22) No complain on this as it’s rare that spring chicken has dry texture right.

Since the food at Jack Place is affordable, we tried their set lunch the other day at Sunway Pyramid. It was Monday so the main course offered was NZ Sirloin Steak with Brown Sauce Topped with Onion Rings(RM18) and Grilled Boneless Chicken with Tangerine Sauce (RM 13.80). The Set lunch was inclusive of a soup of the day, main course, coffee/tea and dessert. It is valid from 11 am to 2.30 pm daily. You can choose to upgrade your meals too:

Add RM4.00 for Lobster Bisque
Add RM3.00 for Other Soup
Add RM3.00 to change the sauce of your main course
Add RM2.00 to upgrade normal coffee to freshly brewed coffee

No comments on the NZ Sirloin Steak because Yichang loves to have his steak well done (weirdo YC :p). Again the tangerine sauce was bland and I ate that with dollops of chilli sauce. Overall, the food here is just nothing fantastic, price is pretty reasonable and I love their attentive service at both outlets.

Wong Soon Kee Nasi Lemak

My engineering friends are doing a food catering business for their Cyberpreneurship assignment (and for our welfare too). The food will be delivered to your doorstep from 9th April to 13th April and they will charge RM 1 extra only. They had selected several eateries like Kajang Satay, Murni and Wong Soon Kee as their suppliers. So I just tagged along for the food sampling. For your information, Restoran Wong Soon Kee is located between SS14/1 and SS14/2.

Long line of patrons can be seen during dinner time, everyone comes here for the fried chicken at this particular stall. The operating hour starts from 430 pm. It is selling fast and usually the chickens are sold off by 7pm.

Now I know why everyone keeps raving about the chicken. The skin is crispy and the meat is juicy and tender. The portion was huge too! I’m having a hard time to finish off my plate. The fried drumstick is served over a bed of rice, light creamy curry sauce and home made sambal. I called this a chinese version of nasi lemak. The curry sauce and sambal are catered for our tastebuds, it is milder and lighter.

We had rojak from another stall. They are generous with the crackers, crunched peanuts and yao char kuai. The cut fruits were fresh too. Only complains is that the rojak sauce is a tad too sweet.
Taufu Bakar – The grilled taufu was sliced into half. Shredded cucumbers, peanuts and prawn paste will be sandwiched between the slices. I tried better version of tofu bakar by some unknown roadside so it makes this pale in comparison.

I’ll update more information about my friends’ assignments so that everyone in the cold deserted Cyberjaya can enjoy these gastronomic specialities ok?

Tony Roma’s @ Sunway Pyramid

Tony Roma opened Tony Roma’s Place in North Miami 30 years ago. The famous Baby Back ribs emerged as the house specialty that words are spread that Tony Roma’s is THE place for ribs. In fact TR has become a world success story with uncountable number of branches over the world, and now finally it has arrived in Malaysia!

After the management’s consideration, they made the Tony Roma’s outlet in Malaysia as a Halal outlet. There’s both pros and cons to this, as the legendary pork ribs will not be served but we get to dine in with our friends from all races.

The laid-back atmosphere encourages relaxed dining.

hile Tony Roma’s is world famous for its rib dishes, the award-winning restaurant offers diners a well-rounded menu with chicken and beef dishes as well as soups and salads.

Americans love to accompanied their food with some magaritas, or romanitas as they named it here. Of course theres some bottemless drinks that get your money worth. What we did is we shared some of the bottomless drinks and the serving staff never bother to stop us. Hehehe

So I’ll let the pictures do the talking here ok? Was to lazy to run through my receipts to name each of the pictures :p.

Credits must be given to the friendly staff, they have excellent services that make us feel home. Overall the food is good with big portion compared to Chillis of TGIF. I love it that you can actually make your own choice when it comes to side dishes, no more oily and filling fries for me! Their mashed potatoes are authentically american – rich and creamy but I’ll try to avoid their coleslaw next time, there’s just something wrong with it.

Of Xiao Long Baos and La Mien Part I

Dragon I has opened up their fourth branch in Malaysia (the previous branches would be at Cititel Midvalley, Central BU and One Utama New Wing). Whoa, at least there’s something new at Sunway Pyramid other than Zen’s and Kim Gary! It seems like there’s a spur of Shanghai food replacing the trend of HK char chan teng concept.

Previously Hartz Chicken Buffet is running on this place, but they shifted one floor below, taking up smaller space and they did some revamp.

Passerby can get a glimpse of the rolling and folding of dumpling skins, the filling and the steaming process of Xiao Long Baos.

Statues of Qin terra cotta warriors line the entrance into the restaurant, with a wall of Chinese characters as the background. I’m quite impress with their interior and I believe that this is the reason that customers flock in.

Thumbs up for the menu as the items listed are accompanied by pictures and descriptions.

I accidentally deleted the Xiao Long Baos pictures taken. Careless minded! I’m left with this picture of Xiao Long Baos with Crab Meat. The right way to eat Xiao Long Bai is to take a small bite of the skin and suck the broth. The soup inside is created by placing some frozen soup inside the dumpling before steaming. The steam heat melts the frozen soup.

Fried rice with Chinese ham (Jing Hua Huo Tui) and chicken RM 12 – According to Leeping, this is nothing fantastic, in fact it is a bit over priced.

Zha Jiang Mien (Noodles with minced meat and bean sauce) RM 12 – I took a bite if this, and the flavour of black bean sauce is overpowering.

Citygal’s choice would be La Mien with Fried Pork Ribs RM 14- Their La Mien is a turn down as I expect it to be springy as it was hand made while the broth is acceptable for me.

The pork ribs are the saving grace, it’s juicy yet tender and most importantly it doesnt feel greasy at all!

Stay tune for Part II folks~!!

Restaurant Hoppy @ Dataran Mentari Sunway

We met up with KampungBoy’s aunt family for dinner at this place, HOPPY Restaurant which is originated from Johor Baru. It was started by a Chan family in the 1980s.
Today, they have added three branches in SS2 in Petaling Jaya, Dataran Mentari in Sunway and Desa Aman in Kepong and four more in Johor.
Hoppy has become popular the past two decades due to its traditional recipes for making herbal roasted duck in three styles — Szechuan-style or with ginseng and dong guai (both Chinese herbs). (Information from Sun2Surf)
Apart from that, they are good in seafood and home cooked dishes. You can always see that this place is jammed pack with buses and buses of tourists if you dine in. A lil tips here, if you are on rush, just order the same dishes as the tourists.

Greens to balanced up the meaty fatty meal..

Char Siew..I prefer char siew with layers of fats and lean meat just like this

Herbal Roasted Duck.. Love the aroma of Tong Kwai..

Sambal Squid..Hmmmmm no wonder they are roasted duck specialist

Steamed fish with pounced ginger..No comment

Taufu with Crab Meat in Claypot..Good stuff and great eaten with white rice..

Recommendation: Their best dishes would be roasted duck pork and chicken. It will cost you less than RM 10 per person if you stick with that. Their home cooked dishes and seafood dishes are nothing to shout about.
