Coffee in Love @ Sri Hartamas

Set among the tranquil greenery of Eastern Nursery in Sri Hartamas, Coffee in Love is a place to sit back and relax whilst enjoying a delicious cup of Columbian coffee with home made cupcakes. The café is a mixture of retro, nostalgia, and quirkiness. I love the charming table settings and the travel collectibles and toys which the owners have collected over the years. I read about the start up story from their website:

How it all happened?

Well, every trip to Hartamas in KL, we would pass this secluded hidden corner tugged right after under the bridge and everytime we wonder what it is and how it’s like if we did a make-over ! …calling to us to come right in and browse.

And so we did !

In Autumn 2010, we finally stopped by. …. and many visits after that.

And finally here we are. A cosy little hidden cafe is being born.

I’m glad their curiosity got the better of them! Hence, the birth of such an artsy cafe. The coffee was decent; not to strong and not too light and we really like the distinctive flavours of these cupcakes - Lemon Poppyseed, Dark Chocolate with Salted Caramel, Peanut Butter and a Guinness (RM4.50 each). There is also free WIFI so feel free to have a seat with your laptop or pick up a book and relax over a cuppa. You couldn’t find a nicer more relaxing atmosphere in the heart of the city. My only gripe about sitting outdoor is the humidity of our tropical climate and the lack of cooling fans.

Citygal’s 24th (the secret that’s not so secret anymore)

Updates: Our flickr photos are made public. Click on the flickr tab at the side bar to view our pictures.

To my friends, families and readers, thanks for the well wishes! The overwhelming awesomeness everyone showed me this past week was much appreciated but I have to disappoint you guys. We are not, despite several rumours to the contrary, engaged to be married. We can’t help but have a little giggle about this but we’ll figure it out when the time comes.

I have been sick; my throat is getting scratchy and my nose is running and I am no better on my birthday. So, I spent a rather quiet day with KampungBoy, no party and no merry-making. It was really sweet of him to surprise me with a little blue box with the perfect white ribbon. It doesn’t matter what comes wrapped in that little blue box, because it is among the most favourite gift a girl could possibly receive.

Thanks, the interlocking ring put a smile upon my face.

The birthday dinner was a simple one, nothing extravagantly expensive. We headed to Izakaya Ichiban at Plaza Damas for some hearty and good Japanese food. It’s no frills and unpretentious place with minimal décor and ordinary lighting, like a ???. There were plenty of Japanese diners which are probably a good sign too.

Kaki Mayo Yaki (Baked Oyster with Spicy Mayo). The fresh and juicy topped with spicy mayo are absolutely delicious! The sides of stir fry enoki mushrooms, shitake mushrooms and capsicums goes really well with the oysters too.

Ika Shio (Japanese Grilled Squid). All happily glazed in some fresh lemon juice, the ika was a bit savoury and moist with but not chewy. It tasted so delicious on its own, without the need to use any other seasonings.

For our toro (salmon belly) don and wagyu beef don, the portions were pretty generous but we find it mediocre. Nonetheless, it’s a steal to indulge in toro and wagyu beef at only RM 30++.

With quite an extensive sake list, Ikaya Ichiban is a no-frills place to meet up with friends for a pint and bite. We’ll come back to check out the other items in the menu for sure.

Korean BBQ @ Daorae Garden Desa Sri Hartamas

(Non Halal)

My love affair with Korean barbecue began from Hwaroyeon and it sets me to search for such goodies around KL. To my delight, I have extra excuses to indulge in such grilled and charred big chunks of meat in conjunction with Rome’s 20th birthday celebration.

A huge increase of Korean restaurants, retailers and groceries stores around Sri Hartamas is seen, particularly because Hartamas and Bukit Kiara attracts a high expatriate population with Japanese and Korean who comprise almost half the total residential population. So Daorae at Desa Sri Hartamas it is!

ROME
P1150475

im chi is crunchy, tangy, salty, addictively spicy and less pungent. The panchan dishes such as spicy cockles, bean sprouts, omelette with sausages and sweet pumpkin has been ‘malaysianised’ to suit our taste bud, but it feels weird on Rome’s taste bud, it was inevitable.

P1150473

Bindaeduk (korean pancake) is ordered as a reminiscent of many of our hunger strike in night at our hostel at Jung No, Seoul.

P1150480

I love the plates of fresh green shallots that comes with the galbi set. The after effect will certainly take your friends’ breath away. Gobble down lots of shikye (rice drink) to avoid the serious onion-shallot-garlic breath after.

P1150484

We had some complimentary spicy crab dish that comes with the galbi set. Weird combination huh?

P1150497P1150503
P1150498P1150501

We had four Daeji Galbi (pork ribs) dish of the sweet and spicy variation. The sweet variation is marinated in a sauce made from fruit juice, rice wine, soy sauce, sesame oil and sugar while the spicy variation uses house spicy marinate sauce. It is succulent in taste, crisply grilled to perfection with slightly charred around the edges.

P1150496

The waiters and Chef Kim will expertly grill, flip and toss the meat to ensure that it was cooked to perfection. It feels authentic because some fiery charchoal block is used.

Another two Dakgalbi (marinated chicken) dish is added to the order as everyone turn out as cannibal.

P1150513

NaengMyeong (chilled buckwheat noodles) is often served followed by a galbi meal. Koreans believed that the icy cold broth full of shaved ice can offset the heatness of the galbis. Served in a cold stainess steel bowl, the noodles sit in a tangy iced broth made of chicken stock, and are garnished julienned cucumbers, a slice of a Korean pear, and often a boiled egg.

P1150505

Koreans have been drinking shoju for thousands of years. So a bottle or two of shoju is obligatory to mark the great birthday celebration. Smooth and clean in taste, it is easy to drink in combination with galbi dishes.

Rome with smoky, sauce-smeared lips after the feast. Happy Birthday Yeong Jun!

P1150460

O’Chocolate from BigBoysOven is excellent as always, very fresh and delicious. I’ll keep ordering from you guys!

Daorae Garden serves authentic and delicious barbeque dishes. The service is excellent and prompt where you just have to sit and wait for the food to be done. The waiters also replace the grilling rack once it is charred. Total bill comes to RM 350++ with 2 bindaeduks, 6 galbi dishes (RM 27 each) and 3 shojus. Panchans, rice drinks and another 2 bindaeduk is on the house. Sounds reasonable for me because there were 11 of us. No wonder the Korean Popstar Rain dropped by!

Dae Sa Kwan Korean BBQ @ Desa Sri Hartamas

A huge increase of Korean restaurants, retailers and groceries stores around Sri Hartamas is seen, particularly because Hartamas and Bukit Kiara attracts a high expatriate population with Japanese and Korean who comprise almost half the total residential population.

It’s hard to make up our mind as there was too much of korean restaurants available, the heavy rain pour made the decision. We settled for Dae Sa Kwan where we had just parked our car infront of the shoplots. Maybe we shall try out Daorae which quite a number of bloggers had featured about next time.

We were brought to the upper floor, where we can experience the traditional korean dining, it normally entails sitting on the floor and eating off a small table. My calves soon emitted frantic signals of numbs, guess I need to correct my postures as sitting with ur knees cross is the ‘very right’ postures.

Hmm their menu is a bit confusing, its all in korean words with description in English..but hey I need pictures!!

Free flow of sky juice

Appetizers / starters – You are entitled to refills of two servings. Most of the veges are pickled stuffs, some even looked and tasted like mum’s cooking.

Just find this bowl of rice picture adorable, don’t you think so?

Kgboy said that the silver coloured elongated chopsticks looks like some needles where ancient Chinese heroes used to test whether their food is being poisoned. LOL

The bibimbap hotpot that we ordered, with assortment of veges, beef and some garlic, onion based soup. The soup is lip smacking good, its great for curing flu viruses too!

You can have your food barbequed too, the sizzling and cracking sound of crisps and lards makes us feel “urrrgghhhh, we should have ordered that!” . Nevermind though, as the soups and beef are good, and we shall try their bbq item next time.

It costs about rm 60. We can hardly move after all the stuff, we tried really not to waste to food but mission failed. It’s an good excuse to do some boutiques hopping around hartamas area after that. There’s a lot of boutiques selling nice and cheap clothing around this area!

Souled Out Cafe & Bar @ Desa Sri Hartamas

Souled out is one of the famous cafe bar in KL where everyone knows about it. Other than coctails, wines and beers, they have an extensive array of western, local and northen india cuisine that cater to different tastebuds. However, the most highly demanded item would be their wood oven pizza. Too bad that we were to full for anything after the feast at Murni’s.

Free car jockey service..Good eh? I heard that they have dancing staff too!

M-16 and Margarita

Irish Coffee and Tequila Sunrise

Awww..SO sweeeeet!

Last but not least, a group picture of the gang!
