On August 31, 2007 commemorates Malaysia’s 50th year of independence with fireworks, flag-waving and prayer for unity across all the races and religions. We were in a joyous mood at the countdown party at Ikano Power Centre yesterday night. The song ‘Tanggal 31’ by Sudirman Arshad has resonant on everyone as it is such an upbeat song that never fails to amaze the crowd.
Tanggal 31
Bulan lapan lima puluh tujuh
Merdeka! Merdeka!
Tetaplah merdeka
Ia pasti menjadi sejarah
Tanggal 31
Bulan lapan lima puluh tujuh
Hari yang mulia
Hari bahagia
Sambut dengan jiwa yang merdeka
Mari kita seluruh warga negara
Ramai-ramai menyambut hari merdeka
Merdeka!
Tiga satu bulan lapan lima puluh tujuh
Hari mulia negaraku merdeka
The countdown party was ended by a 10 minutes fireworks display that leave the crowd spellbound.
Malaysiaku yang dicantai, sentiasa gemilang, cermelang & terbilang! Selamat Menyambut Merdeka ke-50!

The ninth day of Chinese New Year is a significant day for the Hokkiens, it is a day of gratitude for their ancestors’ relive. I still remember the story that my primary school teacher told me vividly.
Long time ago, some intruders invade the Hokkien province and when they ask the locals what is their origins, they answered “Hok-Kien-Lang”. The intruders misinterpreted it as LANG (wolf) and thus a massive massacre began. The locals run for their life and they hide themselves under the clusters of sugarcane. As soon as the intruders has gone far, the locals came out from the clusters, and it is on the dawn of the ninth day of CNY. So, the Hokkiens believe that our life and prosperity are granted by the heavenly god (tian gong).
My Hakka family beholds the belief too. So on the eighth day of CNY, friends and relatives are invited to our house to join us for the prayer.
Fruits, Ang Ku Kueh, Huat Kueh, Mi Ku, roasted chickens, roasted ducks, and roasted pork in whole are arranged accordingly on tables wrapped in red colored paper. My mum cooked some curry chicken and char bee hoon for the guests. Last but not least, Hakkas must have yeong tofu so we ordered 200 pieces of it from the famous Dai Shu Geok. Everyone pray to Tian Gong and wish that their business will be prosperous in the coming year.

Home made agar agar in coconut and pandan flavour is finishing real fast! I love those mould in assorted flowers and fruits design.

Ops! A mild open burning is going on. It’s a tradition for the family members to fold the paper gold ingots (yuen bao) and burn it as a way to send cash to your ancestors or god.

Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way ! It’s Christmas and there’s merriment everywhere !
My special wishes to my family, friends, my loved one Kampungboy and my dear readers. Let’s share the wonderful spirit of Christmas together!
Decoration for the festive season is up everywhere! Major shopping malls in Malaysia are sort of competing for the best christmas decoration. It does feast the eyes of shoppers and yet Mid Valley stand out above the rest.

We managed to tailed up with some feeling of Raya after the semester break when Kampungboy’s coursemate Shaiful warmheartedly invited us to his place for lunch. His family welcomed us with open arms and we greeted them while staring at the table full of food.
Shaiful’s mum took up the whole morning to prepare us dishes such as Ikan bakar (Grilled fish wrapped in banana leaf), Ayam goreng kunyit (Tumeric fried chicken), Sayur campur (Mixed vege), Gulai Udang (Curry prawn), Gulai Ikan (Curry fish with lady’s fingers), Daging rendang (Rendang beef) and Mee Sup.
We nibbled on the delicious home made raya cookies while we sit and stay, laughing and talking among ourselves.
Thanks to Shaiful and family for the lunch! It’s a whole new experience for Citygal as she has never been to an open house before (shame on you :p). Kampungboy who was borned and grew up in Kuala Terengganu becomes the chatterbox of the day with his almost perfect Bahasa Melayu.

Coconut milk is boiled with sugar and pandan leaves.
Stirring process must be continued until the mixture become smooth.
More coconut milk, sugar and water are added in.

At the mean time, another small pot of gula melaka is boiled seperately.
After 5-6 hours of stirring, pour in the gula melaka and continue stir till the mixture is smooth.
KampungBoy and me taking part as part of the working team. Each session lasts for one hour and consists of six person. I made a big mistake by wearing a pair of beige coloured pants, I still can see traces of ashes on it.

The final product! Let is cool down for 30 minutes before sealing it.
Main sponsor: Mutiara Dodol. You must be wondering where the dodols went? It was distributed free to those students participated in the “Dodol Cooking Session”. However, it limited to 1 pack per a group of 6 students or per session only.

A lot of happenings in our uni nowadays, read Steven Choo’s entry University turn into megamall (MMU turns into MMMM multi media mega mall) and one of the event is Carnival of Japan which is organized by Japanese Cultural Society from 21st to 23rd of March. The working committes has put in a lot of effort in getting vendors to come in here and setting up the canopies. Kampungboy is the treasurer of JCS and he’s taking part in this event. So I must go Kepoh Kepoh a bit and helping around. One can know that it’s a successful event by just looking at the crowd. I guess noone can resist food right?
For me, the major attraction here is these ARTIFICIAL FOOD models. Serious?? Yeah, it is known as gyodan.I heard that the Japanese must study the art of gyodan for seven years before they are considered professional. They make it out of plastic and display it in restaurants so that the customers can see how will their food be like. But did you know that this is a craft with an 80 year history, and all models are still individually hand made by master artisans? The idea originated in a small mountain town in Gifu, and you can still visit a traditional workshop there. (Information from Princetonol Online)

Isn’t it amazing that all these food looks so real?? They are all hand made by professional japanese artist.
Ok! Let’s get back to real food that you can chew, bite and swallow. They have takoyaki, dorayaki , bananas dipped chocolate, sushis, float, nasi lemak, char beehoon, soya bean, cincau and some japanese stuff from 100 yen shop here. 800 dorayaki is sold off within few hours and the takoyaki stall is always been seen with long queue.

Our blog readers who bought the Japanese curry after reading our post..Must give them loyalty awards dee..
And not to forget our highlight of the day – Pretty Girls in Yukata!! Kawaii neh!! I know them so do bribe me for their contacts!

William is the luckiest guy on earth!

Chinese New Year is the most important traditional Chinese holidays for my family. On the New Year Eve, all the members of the family will gather around for reunion dinner. Fish is a must dish on the table and it shall not ne eaten up completely to symbolized ‘nian nian you yu(fish)’. This will blessed the family with surpluses for the remaining year.
For me family, steamboat has been on the table for the pass consecutive year. Mum boiled the clear soup with mushroom, chicken, sea cucumber, chinese cabbage and scallop. Boy..It tasted soooo sweet!! Ooo..and grandma said that Hakka must have yeong tau fu during New Year’s Eve..So we bought lots of yeong tau fu, prawns, sea cucumber, vege and assortments of mushroom.
