Seri Kembangan, to most KL city folks, is well off the beaten track. However, SK was our favourite playground during our teen years. For those who are new here, we used to reside in SK when we first started this blog, hence the numerous reviews on eateries around SK. This little Chinese village is jam packed with loads of good food and Kien Kee Sup Pedas Ayam Kampung located behind the Post Office in Jalan Besar Seri Kembangan is one of them.

So naturally Kien Kee became a default place for lunch when we were around SK to run some errands one weekend. Kien Kee is situated at an almost hawker center like area with small “make shift” office lots and a centre courtyard. It can get pretty warm towards noon at the non air conditioned area, due to the zinc roof top. Fortunately for us, we managed to secure table at the air conditioned area pretty quickly.

The signature spicy soup, also known as lat thong (辣汤) in Chinese was first served. The clear soup is laden with various porcine goodness such as pork meat, stomach, intestine and liver. Do not be deceived by the clear looking soup as the soup is full of crushed peppercorns that gave it a distinctive spicy taste.

The soup was good but not as good as before because the flavour of the soup was lack of that spicy kick.

We also tried their “Fa Tiu” claypot chicken (花雕鸡). The tender chicken pieces are coated with thick, dark caramelised soy sauce which goes really well with a bowl of white rice. The addition of hua diao, a type of rice wine originated from Shao Xing, China gave it a nice whiff.

steamed tofu

and some greens for a balanced meal

The total bill came out to RM 65 for the four of us. It was pretty reasonable though not entirely cheap. The spicy soup was pretty decent but the piece de resistance is the hua diao chicken. The hole in the wall ambiance added to the whole dining experience as well.

It has been a while since we have posted good places to eat around Seri Kembangan. For those who are new here, we used to reside around SK when we first started the blog, hence the numerous reviews on eateries around SK. While I was about to reformat my PC, I found some long forgotten pictures from those “seri kembangan days”. One of them is this famous mamak that takes it place in front of the tyre shop only after 930 pm daily.

The mamak is popular; with a fair amount of Chinese, Malay and Indian groups frequenting it.

For only RM1, one gets a packet of nasi lemak biasa. Hard boiled egg, mutton curry and chicken feet curry are among the famous side dishes that most patrons would order.

Although eating chicken feet is an acquired taste, but I swear by it. I love eating chicken feet when it is fresh cooked and hot. The mamak’s version was even better – drenched in aromatic thick curry sauce, it goes very well with our packets of nasi lemak. (RM 2 for 3 feets)

Our perennial favourite – roti tisu (RM 1.50) fares pretty well too. Paper thin, crispy, with coarse-grained sugar crystals for the sweet-toothed, it has won our votes!

How I miss those Seri Kembangan days where good and cheap food is aplenty…

To make thing worst, Aunty Yong, the patience possessors, keep cooking, stirring, and tossing around the orders of pan mee ONE after ANOTHER. The serving staff is kind enough to warn you about the waiting time each time we sat down, “30 minutes, are you OK with it?”, we do walked off a few times when we just wanted a quick lunch, but some other time we would just stay and wait patiently, whilst browsing through the newspapers that we brought along.

The noodles are handmade from kneaded flour on the spot. You can only have your order of noodles in soupy version, but with different flavors and ingredients, such as seafood tom yam, mushroom & pork, smooth pork (huat yuk), etc. Other than that, we are given a choice on the noodles – to be torn by hand into bite size pieces, or to be slice into thin/fat strips. Mushroom Pan Meen (RM 3.50). It’s not just your average bowl of soup noodles, the mixture of crunchy ikan bilis, scallions, pork slices and mushroom in the simmering hot pork broth was awesome! The strands of homemade noodles are cooked to perfection when they are soft but still chewy.

Huat Yuk Pan Meen (RM 4.00). Another variations of pan meen, with additional servings of huat yuk (tender smooth pork slides). The pork slices is well coated with a mixture of tapioca flour and egg before aunty brings it to boil.

We wrangled the slippery noodles with chopsticks, dipped them into the bright green colored hot and sour dipping sauce and slurped – which is considered as a taboo in the West but is perfectly acceptable and indeed a norm over here.Great food that comes with a low price (less than RM 10 for 2!), what more can you ask for?

Updated: standard has been deteriorated ever since, we have got comments complaining about the ridiculous waiting time (from 30 mins to 60 mins!) and tasteless / very salty soup from time to time.

I’ll be very bitter thinking that convocation is not that wonderful after all; imagine thousands of names being read out, and how many hands our president will have to shake and not to forget the thousands of student dresses in identical caps and gowns. Despite the sour grape, I have to say that the afternoon’s convocation was wonderful.

The whole picture taking process was fun, although many find smiling hectic as the muscle tension around mouth and jaw after some time. We were famished by the time we left our campus and adjourn to the famous sup pedas ayam kampong at Sri Kembangan. I hope that none of us is squeamish about innards, because they wouldn’t know what they have missed.

We were lucky to secure a table at the air conditioned room. The thirty quenching sour plum lime juice with an extra kick prepare us for the aromatic, fiery and almost searing heat soup.

Our plate of green is delightful too; the lightly cooked lettuce is glistening with oil and sprinkled with caramelize fried shallots.

Fa Diu Gai (Chinese Wine Chicken RM 7 per head). Served in a clay pot, the tender chicken chunks were coated with a slightly sweet and sticky sauce, plus a welcoming hint of wine. The dark coloured sauce goes well with plain o’l white rice.

The Lat Tong (Spicy Soup RM 7 per head) comes with chunks of chicken, pork, intestines, liver, preserved vegetables, ginger slices and the fiery white pepper was use liberally. The soup may be deceiving, looking all clear minus the fiery red colour, as it glides down my throat; my whole body is warmed up in a jiffy. I felt a horrible thirsty sensation soon after, which makes me wonder the culprit is MSG or the spiciness of pepper?

I found the food deteriorates compared to my first visit but this restaurant still comes highly recommended for their simmering spicy soup by everyone who goes there. Mind you that getting here was hectic when you are not familiar with Sri Kembangan area; I’ll post up a map for your convenience soon.

This place is famous for the mackarel fish (???) and steamed chicken. Both were sold off by the time we get there. For the fish dish, the flesh is scrap off from the bone and minced repeatedly before some seasoning is added. The glue-ify fish paste is then attached to the head and tail to be deep fried. It is similar to something that we tried at the famous beggar chicken place in Banting.

Patrons were rushing in after reading the newspaper review? The place was packed even on a Tuesday night.

Garlic Snail (???) RM 20- Thanks to Joe’s recommendation, this is excellent. I love the creamy sauce with the strong hint of garlic and curry leaves. Eventhough the sauce is so strong that it mask the natural sweetness of the snail, the firm and slightly chewy texture remains.

Sweet Sour Pork in Yam Basket (?????) RM20 – My favourite dish! The pork strips are crispy and the batter is not too flourly. Not much seasoning on the yam basket but it tastes good after absorbing the flavour of the sweet sour sauce.

Stir Fry Lettuce (????) RM 10

Specialty Tofu (????) RM 15-It tastes like the crossover of fishball and tofu. The texture is not as soft as tofu and as springy as fish ball. This is a bit plain for me because I prefer those fancy type of tofu with salted fish or dried squid added.

Stir Fry Brussel Sprouts (????) RM10

Herbal Chicken (???) RM 18- The chicken is a tad too dry and the herbal soup is too mild. The portion is quite small for 14 pax too.

Curry Fish Head (????) – Big RM 28, Medium RM 22, Small RM 18. It is presented in a claypot to maintain the warmth of the dish, the fish head is wonderfully simmering in the slightly spicy curry. It gives you a tangy taste amid the mix of long beans, brinjal, lady’s finger with Tau Pok to add to the zest of this dish.

The makan clan, it is good to have dinner with them because we can try a little bit of everything. The food is very reasonable with total bill comes about rm 10 for each person. The food is good but not as fantastic as portraited by the newspaper review. Will definitely come back again for their signature fish and chicken dish. It is advisable to make a reservation during weekends.

This particular stall is no stranger to SK folks or MMU students with it’s nice and sweet broth and extremely reasonable price.

Sorry to say that they do not serve dry version of Pan Meen. It is challenging to slurp down the soup in such a hot weather. You can make your order according to the sized of the mee, the thinner version, normal version and flatten version. As you can see, the owner is cooking using three pots that differentiate the sizes of the mee.

Deep Fried Anchovies and Extra Spicy Sambal. Act like a hero by scooping large amount and sambal and you’ll suffer from fiery stomach.

The thinner version of Pan Meen is served with a stock made from anchovies and sweet potato leaves (fan su ye) were put instead of the usual pucuk manis. The dough were rolled into flat pieces, and run it through a noodle machine.

The flatten version of dough. The hand made dough is rich in texture ( a bit chewy and springy) and the soup is to die for.

Look at this! 8 empty bowls for 5 of us! We reckon that Starlight must be quite famous among SK folks by judging on the crowds during a normal weekday. The dishes were named after Jin Yong’s ?? martial art novels, for example their famous salt baked fish is called ?????. I forgot all the other names because I’m not really a fans of Jin Yong’s writting.

It’s located at a corner lot. Most patrons prefer to sit at the open space area rather than the spacious indoor.

The chef recommended tofu (????). This is extremely appetizing, the tofu stuffed with fish paste is deep fried and topped over with some thai chilli sauce and shredded greens.

Pineapple pork ribs (???). The pork ribs coated perfectly with sweet and sour sauce are served with some pineapple cubes in a pineapple basket.

Kam Heong Lala (????). Two thumbs up for the extra ommmph cili padi and crunches of dried shrimps.

Overall, the food is good for a casual dinner with friends or family. The total bills comes about rm 40 for the two of us. Their signature dish salt baked fish dried butter crabs are selling fast, so you better make your move earlier next time.

iniSeri Kembangan is truly a hidden gem with fantistic Chinese Food like hakka yong tau foo, paper wrap chicken, pan mee, spicy soup, to name a few! I was exposed to this place during my University Days in Cyberjaya, very lucky indeed!

Hakka cuisine is characterized by its saltiness (from the use of soy and preserved vegetables), fattiness (associated with its many pork dishes), and rich aromas (from the use of spices like star anise and five-spice and pungent ingredients like black beans and fermented bean curd).

(Extracted from Eating Asia’s A Big Feed Under The Big Tree).

Other than Hakka Lui Cha, Hakka Yong Tao Fu, Hakka Stewed Pork with Black Fungus( Cha Yuk), my knowings on Hakka cuisine is only remain still. Hakka Village is one of the famous eateries in SK other than Restoran Leong Yah Indah. Their crispy skin pork trotters is a MUST ORDER item but we are not having it this time, worrying that it would scared the koreans off.

Group Picture – Strictly for Girls

Needless to say more, their food is fantastic without burning a hole in your pocket. The total bill came about RM 150 for 14 person. Even the Koreans can’t stop telling us that Chinese Food in Malaysia is Delicious! I will definitely go back if we are dining as group because we can explore on more dishes with more people.

Next stop, Putrajaya…

I was browsing through my picture folders and realized that I tonnes of pictures yet to be posted up. I’m sorry because there were too many events, gatherings and parties going on for the pass few months. I’ll try to update regularly ok?

This is another steamboat place at Seri Kembangan yet to be discovered! They are having this special promotion in conjunction with their new opening at RM 18.80 or RM 20.80 (Inclusive of drinks) per head. From what I know, their price remained ever since. -_-

If you are coming from the direction of Equine Park, turn left once you reached Sri Kembangan town area. It’s hard not to notice this place with their big signage and colourful shiny neon lights.

The place is spacious, they can accomodate about 400 people. I love the atap leaf roofing that gives it a very “kampung” feel!

Look at the varieties! Competition for steamboat buffet place are stiff nowadays and in order to sustain, they need to have a wide variety of food choices. One minus point is that their seafood is not really fresh and we try to avoid it by taking more red meat and fish ball.

Usually after his haircut, we would settle our dinner nearby. Bandar Serdang Baru is the area of shophouses adjacent to South City Plaza. Most of the shophouses here are eateries or restaurant. There’s thai food restaurant, bakeries, steamboat, the famous spicy soup, kopitiam, and of course four hawker centres. You’ll be spoilt by the choices here. KampungBoy’s favourite place would be this place. They have all kind of stalls here selling different food, you can even order from the hawker centre opposite. I think they are under the same owner.

Since we have been visiting this place for quite a time, Kampungboy found out that the wanton mee here is the best among the stalls here.
