Dreams come true they do
Dreams come true
From all of us to all of you they do

Don’t you know that dreams come true
Love is just a second away
(Better take a look inside)
Make that magic rule, let the miracle stay
(You gotta take a look inside)

Dreams Come True, Westlife

The dream of running a small cafe has nothing to do with the excitement of entrepreneurship or the joys of being one’s own boss—it’s all about one’s passion and enthusiasm. Such is a case of Dreamz Bakery. It is a love story about a pastry chef (the boy) and a designer (the girl). They both shared the same dream – opening their own cafe. That dream came to fruition when the boy had decided to return home from Singapore where he received training and the girl graduated from a design school.

Dreamz Bakery is small but warm. Customers can choose to sit on a bar top table on the right with high stools or a floor seating area on the left. The affable staffs and owner always smile brightly and the cafe design is kitschy without being cliche. The interior is quite simple; there are no fancy lampshades, mass-manufactured furniture or expensive paintings, but they focused on delivering personal touches. I love the wall adored with portraits of the café’s regular, the pink polka dot table cloth and the quirky guest book which allows us to sit in one corner scribbling and drawing.

Apart from specialising in artisan cakes and desserts, wedding cakes and occasion cakes (birthday, anniversary), there are also cookies for sale. We tried quite a variety of those cookies, and boy they tasted good! My favourite was the kitty almond cookies and chocolate chip nut cookies. I got my Latte (RM 7.50) while Ivy got her Cappuccino (RM 6.90). I thought my coffee was nothing to shout about. The yam cake (RM 9) was moist and dense, but surprisingly leave a light feeling in my mouth, and just sweet enough. Chocolate Mille Crepe (RM 9) was a tad too “flourly” and thick to my liking.

All in all, Dreamz Café is open for anyone seeking great company to come together and enjoy a leisurely afternoon. Here are some photos of this cozy cafe design:

Pan Heong is such a legendary eating establishment in other part of town – Batu Caves. With cheap, affordable pricing and no frills interior; Pan Heong is not intended to be a gourmet restaurant, but as places where one can enjoy comfort food in the company of friends.

This Batu Caves most famous restaurant boasts wall photos of visiting celebrities and politicians throughout the years. The newspaper cutouts are solid testaments to their popularity too.

Sang Har wat dan hor (RM 68 for 4 pax) is one of the main reasons people flock to this restaurant. Imagine luscious fresh water prawn and kuey teow (flat rice noodles) drowned in a thick gravy in bright orange hue (from the prawn roe).

Upon taking the very first bite, we were pleasantly surprised at how delicious it was! The medium sized prawns were sweet, succulent and springy to bite. The kuey teows were so smooth and the eggy gravy was well enhanced by the prawn flavour. Absolutely divine!

Kao Yoke Mee Hoon (vermicelli with stewed pork, RM 16.50 for 2 pax)

The stewed pork was very flavourful, and with the right ratio of fats versus lean meat, it almost melts in the mouth. The mee hoon packed plenty of wok hei too! This must be another must order dish at Pan Heong.

Sang Yu (snake head fish) and Century Egg Porridge (RM 15.50 for 3 pax)

It was cooked just right: the velvety smooth porridge was neither too thick nor watery. The robust fish slices were fresh and chunky while the century egg has a nice, creamy centre. One bite into these beauties and we were transported to heaven!

Mee Mamak Goreng (RM 10.50 for 2 pax). It was sweet and spicy at the same time; but pales in comparison with the excellent dishes we had before this.

Nam Yu (fermented bean curd) Pork (RM 25). Fried till crispy, the nam yu pork was extremely flavourful and addictive. However, we found some pieces to be too lean and tough while some were delightful delicious with a right amount of fattiness.

Even our order of Sweet Potato Leaves (RM 13) tasted so good that it vanished in split seconds!

All in all, Pan Heong serves very good food at a reasonable price. Each of us paid about RM 22 for all that food! Parking is horrendous and the crowd is crazy, so be there as early as 11am for lunch.
Every year when I asked KampungBoy what he wants for his birthday dinner, he asked for nothing but good healthy and happy life. I know! That is one hell of a very general answer; so this year I asked him to make a special request and he specifically asked for a “crabby dinner”. After some deliberation, I decided to take him to Wong Poh for some yummy-licious claypot butter crabs!

If you are a crustacean fanatic, Restoran Wong Poh at Bukit Mayang Mas is the place to go. We reached the place at 6pm sharp on a Saturday evening but to our horror, the place was already packed inside out and we have sit under the intense glaring sun.

We ordered the salted egg mantis prawn as an “appetizer”. It came to our table hot and crispy. While the mantis prawns were coated with incredibly rich and creamy salted egg yolk paste, we find Wong Poh’s version to be too “flour-ly”.

The claypot butter crab is the piece de resistance here, which we spotted in almost every other table. The crabs were so fresh, so fleshy and most importantly reasonably priced – medium size crabs are selling for RM 45 per kg and big size crabs are asking for RM 70 per kg. For only RM 52, we had two medium size crabs with plenty of sweet, succulent meat.

Not to forget the thick, creamy butter sauce with a sprig of curry leaves or two. The gravy is best mopped up with fried ‘man tao’ (RM 0.70 each).

KampungBoy said that it was one of the most incredible-tastiest and satisfying birthday dinner ever. Forget about fine dining! Ditch the fork and spoon! To add to the experience/taste, we broke the claws apart with our hands, pulled the meat off with our teeth and happily licking the butter sauce off our fingers. Messy but so satisfying.
Sushi Tei is one of those Japanese restaurants that offers good quality Japanese food that is light on the wallet. When we were still staying around the PJ/Damansara area, we always make it a point to drop by Sushi Tei for a light lunch/simple dinner after we are done with our groceries shopping at Carrefour, Tropicana City Mall.

So we were absolutely delighted when Sushi Tei invited us over in conjunction with their new menu launch (ends 31st March 2011).

new menu items are marked with asterisk ‘*’ sign.

Edamame (RM 4.80). We love edamame – steamed with a bit of salt, it is a great snack loaded with tons of health benefit.

Wakame Salad (RM 11.80). This light, refreshing salad possesses just the right amount of crunchy seaweed, greens and tangy sauce.

Kani Avocado Salad (RM 14.80). In my little humble opinion, I would say that this salad has it all. Sweet succulent kani (crab sticks), creamy avocado, briny tobiko and fresh, crisp greens.

Sashimi Moriawase (Hamachi, Salmon, Tai) – thick cut, fresh but not to the extend of literally melt in your mouth; considering the price that they are charging.

*Deep Fried Shirauo (whitebait fish). Deep fried to perfection, these little fishes were really addictive! I snacked on fried little fish like french fries!

Tempura Moriawase (RM 13.80). Probably my least favourite of the night; I found the batter a little too greasy for my liking.

Takoyaki Balls (RM 8.30). Filled with a generous amount of ingredients, the takoyaki balls were nothing out of the ball but they tasted pretty decent.

Assorted Sushis

*Crunchy Tuna Roll (RM 18.00). The creamy texture of the tuna combined with light mayonnaise, and its tart flavor combined with seaweed, nicely contrast with the crisp batter.

Kani to Salmon & Avocado Maki, serve with yogurt sauce.

Dynamic Roll

*Volcano Maki (RM 7.80). The maki in melted cheese roll topped with seaweed and tobiko tasted really good. The myriad of texture and the taste was an eruption of flavor!

Teriyaki Salmon. This is such a crowd pleaser; the teriyaki marinade gave the salmon a wonderful kick of flavor. Our only gripe was that the fish was slightly charred.

Teppanyaki Chicken (RM 16.80). The juicy, boneless chicken cubes weretoo mild for my taste bud.

Meat Gyoza (RM 9.80). The gyozas were well executed – crisp on the outside, hot and juicy on the inside.

Yuzu Ice Cream (RM 7.00)

Goma Ice Cream (RM 7.00)

Shio Ice Cream (RM 8.00)

Chocolate Wafer (RM 7.50)

Pino (original, RM 8.00)

We ended our meal with some ice creams and sweet pastries. My favourite has to be the Shio ice cream (salt flavored ice cream). The ice cream combines the classic sweet, creamy ice cream with a little zing of saltiness for a pleasing combination of flavors. You got to try it to fully appreciate the great flavor!
Judging from the crowd that they draw each night, many share the same opinion that Sushi Tei is extremely popular with its consistent quality and affordable pricing. It is definitely a place worth revisiting again, and again.

Private Kitchen, Speakeasy, Underground Dining, Home Cafe……Call it whatever you like, because these terms generally refer to a restaurant-like setting tucked away in some neighborhood housing area or apartments. Reservation is almost mandatory due to limited seating capacity. Advertising is usually by word of mouth; coming from friends and families who have been largely impressed by the food quality. And in most of the time, the chef will decide what to cook for you, based on the best of the market for that day.

That’s a really intriguing idea. And it is already taking place around the world especially in HK, where rentals are exorbitantly priced. Restaurateurs found a new way to market for their food. And here in Malaysia, private kitchen is something that I’ve never known of until my colleague introduces me to Huck’s Cafe, a home cafe located in a beautifully crafted two-storey corner lot at Jalan Gasing.

The house is beautifully converted to a cafe like setting, with beautiful garden and Balinese theme man made pond.

The owner/chef, Huck Seng learns cooking to impress his three children (ya la! he’s married!). He is not trained as a chef, but he improvised along the way and his cooking is a hit among friends and families! Soon enough, friends came over for dinner and eventually they brought along more guests (friends of friends). That’s how the whole idea of starting up a home cafe was borne.

We made a reservation for a Sunday night and showed up a little late. We sipped on a refreshing drink (Basil Seed Mint Soda) while touring the place.

snacks – mini wonton with spicy shrimps

It was a rainy night and coincidentally, we were presented with two types of soups as our starters.

Sweet, rich and creamy; the pumpkin soup was a great tummy warmer. Instead of squashing everything together, the chef has thrown in some bite sized pumpkin cubes in there.

However, the asparagus soup was “lifeless” in taste and a tad too salty for me.

The Grilled Salmon Garlic Asparagus with Lime Rice was cooked perfectly and was delicious. And the crackly crispy salmon skin is the best bit!

Chicken Cordon Bleu with Baked Apples. The cheese was oozing out as we sliced it across – a picturesque scene! The chicken meat was plump and juicy. If you noticed, Huck’s version of cordon bleu is baked as a healthier and less greasy alternative compared to the original recipe that ask for deep frying.

Lemon Roast Chicken (whole bird, feeds 4) is the house specialty. I told Huck that the chicken dish is very “Jamie Oliver” and he laughed, admittedly told me that Jamie Oliver’s recipe is a source of inspiration for him as a chef. It is a simple and fail-proof recipe – just push garlic cloves, whole lemon, rosemany and thyme into the cavity, then put the chicken intoa roasting tray. However, timing is crucial, and it is based on your experience most of the time.

As easy as it sounds, the chicken dish turned out to be amazingly juicy and flavorful

Wild Rocket Chili Chicken Spaghetti. Looks can be deceiving, as the mild looking pasta dish turned out to be quite spicy! It was delicious; and we enjoyed slurping up the spicy strands.

By the time we were done with our food we were stuffed to the brim but Huck brought in more desserts! The Banana Chocolate Brownies with Ice Cream was really good. I haven’t had a good brownies for a very long time and their version surprises me! Soft, moist, buttery, nutty, and chocolaty with a hint of banana flavour; it was a big hit at our table.

Same goes for the rich, decadent and delicious Chocolate Mud Pie Ice Cream, it was so good!

The Creme Brulee was so smooth, rich and creamy! And the sugar coating is caramelized beautifully!
There’s no better way to end a big meal with a cup of brewed coffee!
Jarrod & Rawlins, the purveyors of fine food & wine is launching their brand new set of menu again. Thanks to Elaine and J&R, we were given a sampling of some brand new menu items that will make it into the regular menu this month.

Toad in the Hole with Gravy

We sample a good chunk of tasty offerings such as the “toad in the hole”. J&R’s sausages were good as usual. The beautifully puffed up Yorkshire pudding proves to be a clear winner with its ultra crispy exterior and soft, fluffy interior.

J&R Premium Beef Burger with Cheese (made with 180g Prime Beef Pattie)

The homemade patty was so compact and juicy that it will leave you bemoaning how terribly full you are after walloping one all by yourself. The burger is meant to be shared! Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

cross-sectional view

Chicken Mushroom & Leek Pie

I’ve always love J&R’s pies. The pastry was flakey and browned perfectly. Use a fork to flatten the pastry and let it sink into the creamy concoction of chicken, mushroom and leek. Dig in and you’ll get pleasures in every mouthful.

ultimate comfort food

Smoked Duck Pasta with Mushrooms & Rocket

The best pasta dish served that day. Smoky and moist tender smoked duck paired with al dente pasta with creamy sauce spells P-E-R-F-E-C-T!

Vegetarian Pasta with Garlic Zucchini, Capsicum, Tomato, Pesto & Wine

The pasta sauce was a tad too sour for my liking but the rest seemed to enjoy it.

Prawn Pasta with Spiced Cream & Basil Pesto

We all love the spicy twist given to the pesto sauce based pasta. Only gripe was that the prawns were not too fresh.

Fish Fillet with Parsley Sauce, Boiled Potatoes & Zucchini

Unfortunately the fish was overcooked, resulting in a dry and flaky texture.

Crème Brulee

After gorging in rich after richer savories, the chef fed us with this ultra rich version of creme brulee with perfect caramelized top. Ahhhh such pleasures in life!

Other NEW ITEMS that will be launched includes:

Linguini Gorgonzola with Radicchio & Toasted Pine Nuts
Roast Beef & Beetroot Salad with Horseradish & Sour Cream
Creamy Pea Soup with Ham & Bacon
Their nasi campur with minced lamb was really good. Topped with plenty of chopped parsley, the lamb was absolutely delicious, tender and flavorful.

We had another nasi set that I have problems recalling the name but the fried chicken were excellently done. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and most importantly not greasy at all.

Service is good, food is good, portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. The restaurant also has a nice atmosphere and ambiance. Birthdays, gatherings, celebrations, etc, Waterlily Bistro is the place for every occasion.

It’s no secret that we KL-lites especially the younger generation are infatuated by Japanese Buffet in general. Apart from the fame Jogoya, Munakata, Tenji, Saisaki, Shogun and various other hotels’ Japanese buffet as well as Sunday ala-carte buffet offered by Umaiya, Rakuzen and Xenri, the latest addition is Tao Cuisine who hails all the way from Penang! *yay*

the briny & juicy behemoth oysters, fresh & succulent prawns and thick cut sashimi with average quality

At RM45++ for lunch and RM 58++ for dinner, the pricing is not too bad. Advance booking is almost a mandatory because we were here on a Monday night and the place is packed to the brim!

Apart from the simple buffet line of salad, sashimi, sushi, teppanyaki and dessert, one can also order from the ala-carte menu that features more than 80 dishes. Place your order with the wait staff, and he will print the receipts and place it on your table. As the food arrives, the wait staff will remove the receipt from your table. I reckoned that it is a pretty efficient and fast way to avoid confusion.

Drinks selection are limited to ice lemon tea, orange juice, mango juice, peach tea, green tea, cappuccino and chocolate. No qualms on that; as we got unlimited refills and orders.

The only bummer is the bad lighting. It is almost impossible to snap a good photo, which reminds me that we need to get an external flash! So I’ll just feature food that we thought was good.

motoyaki scallops, grilled butter fish, grilled salmon and abalone slices
lamb chop, sake clams, unagi togu and mini cheese tarts

The service was impeccable too. The wait staff were very attentive and they will change our plates every 30 minutes or so. Please note that if you are looking for some authentic Japanese cuisine, Tao Cuisine is not the place for you. Most of the ala-carte items are prepared in such a way that catered to the Malaysian tastebud, i.e. clever use of various dressings and sauces. We wouldn’t mind at all, as long as the food is good

I love their cheese cakes; the blueberry cheese cake (RM 4.50) to be specific. It is lighter than usual, but the cheese flavor is very rich and intense. And for some reasons, blueberries always go well with cheese.

Their azuki green tea bread & cake (RM7) is very good but it comes with a very short shelf life. It has to be consumed within three days. Easy peasy, we can do it within a day!

We got to sample some of the latest offering of this spanking new bar, courtesy of Natalie, the Communication Manager of Funky Villa.

We started off with NUT CRACKER regular size. (vodka, irish cream, amaretto, hazelnut liqour & vanilla ice cream). It also comes in giant size at RM53 that can easily feed four to five thirsty patrons. Great fun for birthday celebration or gatherings, we reckoned.

We also tried three of Funky Villa’s signature drinks – Iced Roselle, Iced Tamarind and Iced Lemongress (RM 6.90 each). The drinks were very refreshing, with a slight touch of sweetness that takes the edge off the heat of spicy foods that we are going to have later.

Tom Yum Kung serving for 2 (RM13). Served scalding hot, the tom yum kung was very spicy and sour, with a lot of fresh spices and herbs like lemon grass, ginger root, red shallots, lime coriander leaves, chili and kaffir lime leaves. The chef has added in some fresh coconut flesh for some good bites. It complemented the tom yum soup extremely well.

Masamman Beef (Red Curry) (RM23). Massaman Curry is a popular dish from the south of Thailand. The curry gravy was rich and flavorful, with some potatoes cubes thrown in for good measure. The beef cubes were extremely after hours of slow cooking.

Yellow Curry Soft Shell Crab (RM23). The yellow curry with eggy bits was slightly sweet with a subtly hint of spiciness. It went really well with our bowl of Thai fragrant white rice. However, the soft shell crab was over-fried and tasted a little burnt.

The Mixed Platter : EKAMAI (serve 2-3paxes) – RM36 consists of Lemon Grass Seafood Skewers, Bamboo Beef Skewers, Thai Fish Cake and Spicy Pamelo Salad.

Our favourite of the bunch? The beef skewers and lemon grass seafood skewers. So tender that it required minimal jaw exercises.

The Mango Salad with Fried Tofu (RM 14) was served alongside with chunks of deep fried shrimps. It was a mingling of sweet, sour, spicy and salty taste in our mouth.

We were presented with Mango Sticky Rice (RM9), a sweet treat that we absolutely love! The coconut milk soaked sticky rice was really addictive. It was served warm to bring forth the rich flagrance and flavors. My only gripe is that the mangoes were not sweet enough.

There aren’t any reasons to skip Funky Villa if you frequent e@Curve. Set lunch starts from RM9.90 nett with 2 course plus drink, available during weekdays from 12pm to 3pm. I’ve been to the outlets in Esplanade Mall (sg), Novena Square (sg), Pavilion KL and Sunway Giza. The interior of the restaurants emanate a bright and airy feel which reminds me of Sushi Zanmai.

Patrons can opt to sit by the conveyor belt and watch the sushi go by and pick up the plates they want. We were more often intrigued by the ala carte menu and set meals and chose to be sitted at one of the cozy corner.

The food was decent and the servings were quite generous. The restaurant never stinge on the ingredients, so we tend to order too much food, overate, and regretted for hours afterwards.

Having to redeemed numerous california rolls from the Ichiban Boshi reward card, my sister is apparently a fan of Ichiban Boshi too.

arghhhhh. I’m running out of ideas on what to write as I’m using my lunch break today to work on this post.

OK, I’m such a lousy flogger because we ate so well we completely forgot to keep the receipts and I can’t really recall what we had and how much was it.
All I can remember is it didn’t cost us an arm and a leg to eat here. If you are craving for some Ichiban Japanese food but the thought of burning a hole in your wallet is holding you back, Ichiban Boshi is the place to go.

*tata! gonna grab some quick bite now!*

With the famed Mo Sang Kor Bakuteh, Pao Xiang Bakuteh and Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih all located within the same row of shop lots, Taman Berkeley of Klang is probably a good place to do a mini food crawl.

However with only so much space left to relish our food, we opted for Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih since Mo Sang Kor has a branch outlet in Lot 10 Hutong while Pao Xiang already has a presence in One Utama and Pavilion.

Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih House is apparently a very popular restaurant. Rave reviews were all over the internet when I tried goggling. Apart from that, most of the tables were occupied by the time we got there. So we queued up, placed our order at the stall and prayed, hoping that we won’t have to wait too long for our food.

The mee hoon kuih is prepared on the spot. The workers will flatten the dough with their palm and pinch it into some dough pieces with irregular shapes. The dough pieces is then cooked in the boiling broth and served together with vegetables, deep fried anchovies, pork slices and poached egg (additional order).

The mee hoon kuih/cooked dough were so smooth and silky that one will experience difficulties to told them with chopsticks. I love the optimum bite and chewy texture that it gave too. The broth has a mildly sweet flavor, from the slow boiling of anchovies and pork bones. Our only gripe was the lack of those finely chopped chili dippings that we usually see at any other pan mee places.

Priced at RM3.50 (without egg), the mee hoon kuih offers a good value for money. Other than Baby Seafood, Restoran Boston and Teck Huat Bakuteh (coming up), Fatty Mee Hoon Kuih House is one of the eateries that can motivate us to travel the great distance to Klang.

Craft Brew has been a favourite hang out spot of us ever since they opened their door to the public last year. I love the fact that it is (quite) near to my house.

I love the casual and comfy setting.

I love the wait staffs cladded in Super Mario outfit. Uber cute!

It is sad to know that Craft Brew failed to obtain a license to brew their own beer. So the dream of having our very own microbrewery sort of “vanished”.

However, I love the fact that they took the effort to bring in Singaporean beer brand RedDot (the fame GREEN and RED coloured beer) and American brews, Flying Dogs (Old Scratch Amber Lager, In-Heat Wheat Hefeweizen, etc) and Rogue (Brutal Bitter, Dead Guy, etc).

Something is always better than nothing right?

I also like how the food is seriously non halal. Pork ribs, pork burger, carbonara and etc; you name it, they have it. Even the complimentary soup is full of porcine goodness but it was too salty for my liking.

Honey Mustard Pork Ribs (RM28). I know how everyone loves their ribs to be “fork tender and falling off the bone easily”, but our honey mustard ribs were a bit too soft and mushy.

The lamb shank (RM28) was deep fried before it was braised or simmered to succulence (I think), which results in a slightly crispy skin. This delicious lamb dish has all the right flavours in place too! Thus, it comes highly recommended by KampungBoy.

The Craft Brews Pasta is a cream-based pasta with bacon strips and sliced shiitake mushrooms. Generous servings and they did not skimp on the ingredients.

We absolutely adore the Potato Wedges (RM12)! I really liked the crispy aspect of the wedges and the addition of some chili flakes was genius! It made a great beer snacks too.

We also sampled three types of home brew:

Monster Green Lagers that appears in translucent green is brewed and lagered with premium spirulina that gives the unique color and a whiff of fresh fragrance.

English Ale is for someone who likes stronger and full-bodied beer. It appears in ruby red and the flavour comes a bit complex with smoky, spicy and hop-py.

Weizen (Wheat Beer) appears in Golden and cloudy. With the fruity nose and spice flavour, you will find it light-bodied and refreshing.

*1/2 pint at RM15

“In Heat” Wheat Hefeweizen (RM18) is highly recommended for ladies and for those who find beers bitter

The food was decent but for someone who prefers full flavoured beer, you might find the light and refreshing beers to be tasteless and odourless. It was ok for us, because we can drink them all night without falling over.

I love my Vietnamese Drip Coffee with Milk – RM5.95. The coffee is traditionally coarsely ground, then individually brewed with a small metal Vietnamese drip filter (cà phê phin), into a cup containing the condensed milk. The condensed milk and coffee are stirred together and poured over ice. It was a real treat, especially for those who enjoy their coffee strong and sweet.

Something refreshing but bland – Lotus Root Tea

The Three Coloured Drink resembled our favourite cendol ice with almost the same ingredients.

For starters, we had the fried spring roll with minced chicken, vegetables and yam (RM3.25 per roll). Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, the spring roll was very addictive.

Lemon Grass Chicken – RM7.95 (4 sticks per plate). Imbued with the flavors of lemongrass and lime, the chicken pieces were very flavorful. My only gripe is that the texture is slightly dry.

The Summer Roll consisting Shrimp, Chicken, Salad & Rice Vermicelli (RM3.95 per roll) was fresh, light and refreshing.

We absolutely adore these Sugar Cane Prawns at RM7.95 (4 sticks per plate). The shrimp paste was springy with a light hint of sweetness, coming from the sugar cane sticks.

Patrons can also order pho according to their ways with the helpful images and explanation on the various beef parts available.

The pho noodles are made from 100% rice flour & imported from Vietnam and every bowl is accompanied with fresh coriander leaves, bean sprouts, hot chili padi, lemon wedges and basil leaves.

Phở Tái, Nạm
Noodle soup with eye round steak, flank.
Regular: RM13.95
Large: RM15.55

Phở Tái, Chín Nac, Nạm, Gân Sách (the Adventurer’s Choice – basically it has everything)
Steak, Brisket, Flank, Tendon, Tripe Pho
Regular: RM16.95
Large: RM18.55

The restaurant owner taught us a special method to savour the pho. First, sample the origanal flavour of the pho before adding the fresh coriander leaves, bean sprouts, hot chili padi, lemon wedges and basil leaves. Then, pour in some special sauce that Pho Hoa brought in from North America (the sweet sauce & spicy sauce). It will make the soup hot and fiery with extra intense flavour.

Our bowl of pho was really good! The broth was flavourful and the various beef parts (especially the tendons) were so soft and tender.

Phở Đồ Biển Chua Cay
Hot and Sour Seafood Pho
Regular: RM13.95
Large: RM15.55

Com Ga Nuong Cha Trung Hap – RM15.95
Rice with Grilled Chicken & Egg Cake

Cha Gio Re Kem – RM5.95
Net Spring Roll consisting Yam, Sweet Potato & Mung Bean with Vanilla Ice Cream
It was a very special sweet variation of the Vietnamese Spring Roll. The mashed yam and sweet potatoes were sweet and warm, together with the chilled ice cream, it was a delectable treat.

Chocolate Banana Tower (Fried Banana with Ice Cream ) – RM6.95

Coconut Flan with Caramel – RM4.25. The flan had a smooth and jiggly texture; pretty good stuff!

Cendol Kem – RM6.95
Cendol, Red Bean with Coconut Milk, Gula Melaka & imported Coconut Ice Cream

Pho Hoa is definitely the place to be for a delicious bowl of pho. The decent serving size proves to be a great value for money; a large bowl can easily feeds two person!

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, perfect for reading the papers, drinking a cup of aromatic coffee that awakes our senses while enjoying a full English breakfast. We found ourselves at Jarrod & Rawlins (again & again); courtesy of Elaine who invited us over.

There is an enclosed yard with shade trees, a beautiful garden and patio behind the J&R premise.

We chose to sit outside, soaking up the morning rays while waiting for our food.

some coffee to kick start the day.

*part of J&R Weekend Brunch Special. Saturday & Sunday 10am to 3pm.

First to arrived was the Egg Florentine (RM28)* – organic soft poached duck egg on a bed of spinach and hash brown base topped with Hollandaise Sauce served with coffee/tea and orange juice. It is a healthy twist on the eggs Benedict, substituting spinach for bacon or ham. For some reason spinach, hash brown and eggs make the most delicious combination. And the tangy, creamy Hollandaise sauce was magnificent!

We also had the J&R’s Egg Benedict Indulgence (RM28)* (two soft poached organic eggs with your choice of bacon, smoked salmon or ham on toast topped with Hollandaise Sauce served with coffee/tea and orange juice) with a twist; toast substituted muffin and smoked salmon is placed under that stack instead of ham.

The perfectly runny yolk surrounded by nicely cooked egg white is the greatest part of the pleasure of Eggs Benedict. We poked through the yolk and enjoyed the runny hot mess. Mmmmmmm…

The most important meal of the day is often the loveliest. Let me present to you the J&R Special – “The Full Works” (RM34) that consists of two organic eggs sunny side up, with two sausages, bacons, grilled tomato, hash brown, mushroom, Heinz baked beans, toast or fried bread served with coffee or tea and orange juice.

Enough to feed an army; it was a monster plate of the finest ingredients because J&R made their own deli. Just soak up the grease and feel good about it.

J&R hangover special (RM35)*: an bacon and egg “butty” with an Alka Seltzer and a Bloody Mary.

Alka Seltzer and Bloody Mary - the ultimate relief of hangover?

J&R Classic Waffle with Maple Syrup & Butter (RM9.90) was good and simple but it paled in comparison when compared to what we had earlier. :p

Finishing off the breakfast with some nice teas and coffees, we sit back and enjoy this beautiful Sunday morning. It was nice meeting Chris and Joshua for the first time. Yap Thomas whom we meet from time to time was there as well.
