Grub of The Week#2 – Maybank Nasi Lemak @ Seapark

20110707-015733.jpg
Just next to Maybank at Petaling Jaya’s Seapark (SS21) is where you’ll find one of the best nasi lemaks in PJ. Some call this place “Maybank Nasi Lemak” because of it’s close proximity to Maybank. The nasi lemak (RM 4.50) stall draws a big crowd every day of the week.

Not only that everything on this plate worked together but individually it was all spot on! The sambal isn’t too spicy and has just the right tinge of sweetness. Though not very “lemak-y”, the rice is fluffy and warm. The fried chicken who everyone keeps raving about has crispy, crackly skin and the meat is juicy and tender. The portion was huge too! Even the telur mata kerbau (sunny side up) was pan fried to perfection I love to poke the runny egg yoke and give everything a good stir!

Tyre Shop Mamak @ Seri Kembangan

P1210680 copy

It has been a while since we have posted good places to eat around Seri Kembangan. For those who are new here, we used to reside around SK when we first started the blog, hence the numerous reviews on eateries around SK. While I was about to reformat my PC, I found some long forgotten pictures from those “seri kembangan days”. One of them is this famous mamak that takes it place in front of the tyre shop only after 930 pm daily.

P1210684 copy

The mamak is  popular;  with a fair amount of Chinese, Malay and Indian groups frequenting it.

P1210691 copy

For only RM1, one gets a packet of nasi lemak biasa. Hard boiled egg, mutton curry and chicken feet curry are among the famous side dishes that most patrons would order.

Although eating chicken feet is an acquired taste, but I swear by it. I love eating chicken feet when it is fresh cooked and hot. The mamak’s version was even better – drenched in aromatic thick curry sauce, it goes very well with our packets of nasi lemak. (RM 2 for 3 feets)

Our perennial favourite – roti tisu (RM 1.50) fares pretty well too. Paper thin, crispy, with coarse-grained sugar crystals for the sweet-toothed, it has won our votes!

How I miss those Seri Kembangan days where good and cheap food is aplenty…

Williams @ Taman Mayang Jaya, PJ

During my exam period, I always have an overwhelming urge to crunch that only chips and to wipe that peanut butter generously on my toasted bread when I’m really stressed out. When both chips and peanut butter went out, I would gone utterly crazy and KampungBoy would drive me to the nearby (Dengkil) mamak stall. There must be some marvelous substance in roti canai and nasi lemak in reducing anxiety and calming stress.

Now that I’m in the ‘fraid not, exam!’ stage, I often dream of the scene of mamak, flooded with hundreds of people from all races that speaks different language are slurping on the tarik and chowing down the maggi goreng. We are uniquely Malaysian. Mamak is still the place to head when we crave for comfort food.

P1120100
There is often an indian flavour to mamak food but it is now infused with both eastern and western influence. In William’s, You can savour in various kind of food, from roti canai, maggi goreng, murtabak, nasi lemak to lo shu fan, wantan mee, soft shell crab fried rice, seafood risotto, meat ball pasta, etc. The crowd is crazy but our food arrive shortly after the order is taken.

The jumbo size longan ribena (RM6). It was utterly sweet for my liking in my previous visit here so I opt for a normal teh ice. Wonder if anyone can finish it all alone, imagine half can of longan, syrup and ribena come in a huge pint glass.

P1120109

Nasi lemak (RM 2.5). The nasi lemak is huge too for the price that we are paying. The rice was hot, fragrant and the sambal was spicy enough for my liking. Overall it is a decent plate of nasi lemak.

P1120103

Pandan chicken (RM 5). My most inticipating dish, as boolicious raved about this in her review. However, it was a total rip off. The serving staff just wrap two pieces of fried chicken with a pandan leaf and secure with a toothpick. I can’t taste coconut milk, spices and the sweet, unique flavour from pandan leaves at all. They should inform us that the pandan chicken is NA beforehand so that we can try other food item.
P1120114

White Sauce Spaghetti (RM 15). The portion is huge too, the al dente spaghetti is laden and the cheese based white sauce, which is actually can of creamy mushroom soup. Albeit inauthentic as a mamak style pasta dish, my friend enjoyed this tremendously.
P1120097

Another signature of theirs, stir fried lo shu fan (rat tail noodles). Again, it was huge that my friend is having a hard time to finish it off. This version of the Loh Shi Fun is a dry version and being cooked in light and dark brown soy sauce. It is a somewhat delicious bowl of noodles even though the taste of dark soy sauce is a bit strong.

P1120120

Triple H (RM 7). The sandwich comes in a layer of three, ham and cheese, chicken chunks, ham and cheese. The outer layer is coated with beaten egg to be pan fried. Not sinful enough? Swipe a layer of Thousand Island dressing over your sandwich. Melting cheese and ham never fail to amaze my tastebud. You will go mmmmmmmmmmmmm just like me.

Even though we came across some disappointing dish, but the extensive menu selection for dinner and supper will lures us back like the sweet siren it is. William’s is near to the old Lim Kok Weng College, looked through all the wooden shacks along Jalan SS26/9, and you can easily spot William’s with the crazy crowd.

Restoran Mosin @ TTDI

After hearing much rantings and ravings about this mamak place from my friend Kenny, we finally made our way there after a scrumptious dinner at TGIF and a late night show of spiderman 3. “You are such a nerd.” says Mary Jane to Peter Parker. My favourite line. She says it in such a great affection. I enjoyed the movie, just that it is overstuffed with story fragments.

So, the menu in Mosin is ordanary, typical mamak food with an addition of Western Food.

Most of the patrons there ordered Roti Mumtaj, their specialty. Roti Mumtaj (RM 4.5) is actually naan topped with shredded carrots, chillis, tomatoes, cheese and sour cream. The naan is thick on the middle with crusty lacy edges with sourish sweet taste. The dipping sauce are dhal, tamarind sauce and youghurt mint sauce. The mint sauce is complements the roti well. If you happens to be around ttdi, give this place a try. There is another branch at Tmn Mayang Jaya too, some where around the old Lim Kok Weng Institute.

Restoran Mosin

Restoran Sri Murni @ SS2 Revisited

I believed that Murni SS2 needs no furthur introduction. They have the most extensive menu among all the other mamak, you name it, they have it. However every table seems to order the same thing – cheese naaan, roti hawaii, claypot lou shu fan, their special drinks with nata de coco, longans and watermelon cubes.

I brought my friend Ching Yee who came all the way from Setapak to stay overnight at my place here. It seems like she and Chin Yee loves this place. It’s worth the far distance from Cyberjaya to SS2.

Claypot Lou Su Fan RM4- Stir the raw egg over before you start eating to have some thick and runny gravy.

Roti Hawaii RM5 with minced burger meat, a sausage center and a layer of egg sticking to the inner skin of the roti canai and not to forget the spider web like mayonnise topping.

Nasi Goreng Bacon RM6- Fried rice with bacon strips, cheese sausages and some salted fish chunks. Whoa this is good, something extraordinary that you can order next time.

Mango Special RM5. My friend Kenny told me that you can order a rm 20 mango special that came in HUGE size. It must be shared among 5 to 5 people.

Restoran Sri Murni @ SS2

I believed that Murni SS2 needs no furthur introduction. They have the most extensive menu among all the other mamak, you name it, they have it. My friends told me that William’s at Tmn Mayang Baru PJ (Beside old Lim Kok Weng) is another unique mamak stall with specialties such as bacon and mozzerella naan, pasta cabonara and triple H.
Ok, back to murni, even though there’s a wide variety of choices, every table seems to order the same thing – claypot lo shu fun, roti hawaii, tom yam soup and surprise juices with lots of chewy bites.
This was the first time out Korea friends have a bite on truly Malaysian food and they are hooked to it thereafter. Too bad that these goodies are only available in Malaysia. They will be drooling over if they are reading my blog now. :p

Roti Hawaii and we told them that it was Malaysian version of Pizza with soft crust. Guess what’s inside there? Minced burger meat, a sausage center and a layer of egg sticking to the inner skin of the roti canai and not to forget the mayonnise topping.

Cheese Naan – Malaysian Pizza with firmer crust. It it best to be served with condensed milk

Claypot Lou Shu Fun and how we name it? – Chinese Pasta with dark sauce. Stir the raw egg over before you start eating to have some thick and runny gravy.

Surprise Mango Juice, Ribena Longan, Surprise Strawberry Juice

All these stuff costs us about RM 119 – Pretty reasonable and everyone is having a good time

Malaysian + Korean – JenHee and HupLim, Rome and HanSaem, Luna and Chin Kuang

Victor and Nahee – The chemistry of LOVE. When sparks fly between two people, we’re quick to say they have the “chemistry” and it happened between THEM. Hahahaha
