Small Note: Our write-up on Nong & Jimmy was featured in The Star Sunday Metro

With more stories about credit crisis, mortgage meltdown and job losses, it appears we are heading towards recession, and it may not get better anytime soon. I figured I’d jump on the recession bandwagon by introducing some recession proof food that is light on the wallet but feels heavy on the stomach.

Vicchuda in Damansara Utama is a great place for some Thai food. The restaurant has done pretty well because it is simply the best – cheap, easy and quick. The owner himself originates from the southern part of Thailand too. Though Vicchuda is essentially a restaurant with Thai influnces, the menu roams freely with some Malaysian fares such as ayam paprika daging masak merah and curries too.

From top left: ayam paprik, menu, tom yum campur, kerabu perut, kailan with salted fish, cucumber with sambal belacan.

Served scalding hot, the tom yum campur is very spicy and sour, with a lot of fresh spices and herbs like lemon grass, ginger root, red shallots, lime coriander leaves, chili and kaffir lime leaves. The bits of cili padi floating on top of the clear soup may look too intimidating, do not fear as real tom yum should draw your sweat and tears. Unlike tom yum soup at other places, Vicchuda’s version has got omphhhh. It was spicy enough to make our scalp sweat but keep wanting for more.

Kerabu Perut. The tripes were thin, slighty crunchy and firm in texture. With dashes of fish sauce, lemon juice and sugar, the sauce is sweet, sour, salty and spicy. Very addictive stuff.

Apart from their specialties such as bawal masam manis udang petai, kerabu sotong, the usual fare like kangkung belacan, ayam papril, fried rice, and nasi pataya are pretty good too. We would highly recommend both kerabu perut and tomyam soup. At only RM4 to RM6 per portion (small), it is best to go for a greater variety of dishes. With 4 dishes, 2 rice and iced water, the total bill came at RM 23. Now this is what we meant by recession food…

On a totally random night, KampungBoy brought me to Selera Jaya 223 for some piping hot nasi lemak and boy, I was hooked after that. I have been begging him to take me here for supper almost every week! As you can see, the place is bustling with activities, even after 12 am, which make it a great place for hang out session.

Mind you that the vendors here are very territorial and they will lead you to their “little territory” before darting away to some new customers again. you can only order drinks from certain stalls, depending on where you were seated. We have always preferred to sit at some blue coloured table at the right side of the food court, because the drinks are really nice! The milo ice (RM 1.60) deserves a special mention here; as it is very kao and and not overly sweet.

One can choose from two type of nasi lemak here – Yati’s (red label) or Suri’s (blue label). As you can see, our favourite remains Yati’s despite the fact that most people loves Suri’s. Suri’s version has comes with some fiery sambal which I can’t really tolerate. Yati’s sambal is sweeter and goes really well with the hot and fluffy nasi lemak. Well, it really depends on individual.

Our RM 1.20 nasi lemak comes with the usual condiments such as sambal, fried anchovies, roasted peanuts and half a hard boiled egg. Being served hot all the time, the amazing fragrance of the rice will waft out, which drives us wild! Usually I’ll take 3 packets of these (heck, it’s only RM 3.60) while KampungBoy will down 5 packets of these when he’s starving!

We have got very nice and prompt services here as well. If the packaging of the nasi lemak feels cold to your touch, you can always ask them to bring a new batch over. Even the sambal, fried anchovies and roasted peanuts are free flow!

Otak-otak too, is selling like hot cakes here. At only RM0.50/RM0.60 (depending on which stall) per piece, it makes a great snack!

Do come by anytime to experience some hot and piping nasi lemak. You wont’t regret it. You might see us gobbling down our nasi lemak like there’s no tomorrow too!

Four crazy floggers embarked on a gastronomic journey to Kepong one night (for full story, read here). Without knowing every nooks and crooks beyond the Damansara/Kepong toll, it was an impromptu trip – we just got to know the destination after we hopped onto the car!

WMW and I dreaded to read the map. The reason? Read up “why men don’t listen and women don’t read map”. So we put all our faith and trust to Jason to guide us to (da dum!) Taman Ehsan Jaya for duck satay that was introduced by vkeong not long ago! Half way through, we picked up Simon who resides in Kepong and was told that we were heading towards the wrong direction! Jason ar Jason…

Makan Kaki

The spicy and creamy peanut sauce complements the smoky-sweet elements of the satays beautifully. Jason downed the sauce till the last drop.

The satay came piping hot in a short while after we placed our order. The duck satay is very similar to the usual chicken satay that we ate, being a little sticky, a little sweet and smoky. The distinctive difference would be the very interesting texture – grease free and extra chewy but with a crunch.

I love the chicken satay to every bit because it is full of flavor and the chewy texture of duck meat. The best thing is it costs only RM 0.60 per stick, which is slightly cheaper than my (old) favourite Satay Haji Samuti. WMW and me even ordered extra sticks to go!

When’s the next food crawl, fellow floggers? :p

“It’s good to come home every now and then, as time goes in a different pace here”, says KampungBoy. I couldn’t agree more. The relaxed pace of life in Terengganu is apparent in the quaint town but one will be easily impressed with its gastronomic delight that exudes an enviable charm.

We have been eating like there’s no tomorrow, mainly because of the two birthday celebrations of KampungBoy’s dad and nephew in merely three days. For his dad’s birthday, we had a lunch gathering ala kenduri style.

The caterers have adequately done a very good job; the food was served piping hot and everything is relatively fresh. An essential for kenduri/wedding function, nasi minyak, or better known as Festive Rice is a perfect accompaniment to the spicy dishes, and it fares quite well as a standalone meal. Cooked with butter, ginger, coconut milk, ginger and various spices; it is highly flavorful and aromatic.

To start with, nibble on some crunchy acar sayur (pickled vegetables) drenched in sweet and sour vinegar sauce. Continue feasting on ayam masak merah (spicy tomato sauce), its distinctively spicy sweet and sour flavour has lured us over again and again. Prepared using free range chicken and various spices, gulai ayam is another variant from the usual curry chicken. Coconut milk makes it creamy with a hint of sweetness and the use of spices takes it to another level of taste. Beef rendang was pretty popular as well, judging from the little leftover for our breakfast the next day.

The dinner was held at Uncle Ng’s Restaurant, one of the better Chinese restaurants in Kuala Terengganu. The food is mediocre, can’t complain much because our taste buds were spoiled by all sort of good Chinese food around Ipoh and KL. However, the roasted chicken deserves a mention here. It’s crackly crispy skin is absolutely delicious; where KampungBoy insist it’s the best part of the bird while I love the tender and juicy part of the meat.

I guess that the secret recipe is still very much similar within the family.

I have always found Village Park to be bustling with customers, often times crowded near the entrance because of great word of mouth about their very delicious malay dishes.
Giving in to our kiasuness and curiosity, we dropped by on a Sunday morning. It is much easier to get a place during the weekends.

Nasi Lemak Ayam (RM 6). It comes with the usual condiments like sambal, fried ikan bilis, chicken, cucumber slices and egg but it tastes unusually delicious. The rice is aggregated loosely together, instead of wet and clumpy. The restaurant owner steams the rice in a wooden container, a traditional method that most Malay mama still adopt. I asked for extra serving of sambal because the fiery red and thick sauce that has been cooked for 8 hours has the right kick of spiciness.

The chicken is something not to be missed at Village Park. It is well marinated overnight in a secret concoction of spices and matches the crispy outside and tender inside criteria perfectly. Trays after trays of these goodies are finishing off in a short while. I have to say that size does matter, the huge slab of chicken is truly satisfying.

A lot of positive feedbacks are given to their lauk pauk, nasi dagang and noodles too. We will definitely come back to give it a try, will be having a hard time to resist ourselves from ordering the nasi lemak again. The lunch for two costs only RM 15 (5% government tax included), definitely great food that is easy on the pocket.

The food will be delivered to your doorstep from 9th April to 13th April and they will charge RM 1 extra only. They had selected several eateries like Kajang Satay, Murni and Wong Soon Kee as their suppliers. So I just tagged along for the food sampling. For your information, Restoran Wong Soon Kee is located between SS14/1 and SS14/2.

Long line of patrons can be seen during dinner time, everyone comes here for the fried chicken at this particular stall. The operating hour starts from 430 pm. It is selling fast and usually the chickens are sold off by 7pm.

Now I know why everyone keeps raving about the chicken. The skin is crispy and the meat is juicy and tender. The portion was huge too! I’m having a hard time to finish off my plate. The fried drumstick is served over a bed of rice, light creamy curry sauce and home made sambal. I called this a chinese version of nasi lemak. The curry sauce and sambal are catered for our tastebuds, it is milder and lighter.

We had rojak from another stall. They are generous with the crackers, crunched peanuts and yao char kuai. The cut fruits were fresh too. Only complains is that the rojak sauce is a tad too sweet.

Taufu Bakar – The grilled taufu was sliced into half. Shredded cucumbers, peanuts and prawn paste will be sandwiched between the slices. I tried better version of tofu bakar by some unknown roadside so it makes this pale in comparison.

I’ll update more information about my friends’ assignments so that everyone in the cold deserted Cyberjaya can enjoy these gastronomic specialities ok?

Kampung Cina is the main Chinese settlement in Kuala Terengganu , situated near the heart of Kuala Terengganu city centre. The row of prewar old buildings were build by the Chinese from China in the 19th century. It is said to be one of the well preserved Chinatown in the world. An old well which dates back to more than a hundred years is also located nearby. It is known as the Low Tiey Well. During the early settlement days, the term Low Tiey signified both that of Chinese translator and Chinese community leader. The water in the well was used for drinking and washing. The well was also believed to have been excavated and constructed in 1875 by Low Tiey Lim Keng Hoon (1820-1882). Ikan Parang Keropok lekor from Hup Bee, it is retailed at RM 9 per packet. Usually keropok lekor was made from a mixture of ikan bamban, ikan parang, ikan kerisi and even ikan bilis which gives it some sort of fishy smell. However pure ikan parang keropok is plain aromatic, that is why the price can be slightly expensive.

Kampungboy’s mum gives me some tips on the deep frying part: flatten the keropok slices with wok spatula in the hot oil. You have to be patient because this has to be done slice after slice. The results? Larger, thinnier and crispier keropok lekor!

It’s always bustling and crowded and hence this is only my fourth visit here. Clueless on where to dine in, Hot Mama pops up in my mind as it has been reviewed by quite a number of floggers.

Hot Mama is a halal malaysianized vietnamese restaurant that resides at the 4th floor of SWP. The orange coloured themed interior is eye catching.

Hot Mama’s Nasi Pyramid RM 8.90. The side dishes resembles our local favourite nasi lemak and the con shaped rice makes me think of nasi tomato from Penang Village. Nothing to shout about.

Ayam Percik with Rice Ball (RM8.90). The ayam percik is a famous dish from kelanatn. The chicken is marinated and skewered on a bamboo stick and peanut sauce is poured over it. Highly recommended by my housemate so it must be really good.

Roast Beef Rice (RM9.50). The beef is a bit over grilled but the special sauce saved my day.

I wouldn’t mind coming back here because the food are reasonably priced, the serving staff are friendly and the environment is cosy. You will be amused by their creativity by browsing throught the menu. Items like cheesy chicken canai threesome (roti canai roll with cheese and chicken), chinese pasta and bananarama are on my “next visit list”.

In the early days Kinta Valley tin rush brought an influx of Chinese immigrants to Ipoh. Many made fortunes and built opulent town houses. You can admire these houses in the old town area, where the Indians are having a ‘Little India ‘of their own.The Chinese have created what is now, one of the Malaysia’s best-preserved Chinatowns, the Old Town.
I forgot whether this is my fifth or sixth visit to Kajang for Satays. Well, that is not so important, as long as I can remember my very FED UP visit this time. Still remember that I give very good review on Kajang Sate Hj Samuri for my past visit that my friend thought that I receive some form of compensation?

Initially, we planned to get into the shaded area because the outdoor area is kind of smoky and my housemate has asthma. However, they blocked us from entering because they just mop the floor and they doesnt want to repeat their work for second time. It’s only 9 pm ok?

One thing I couldn’t understand is why the owner hire so many workers with so little work for them around the place (Utilization of Human Resource is so important)? Most of them sit there doing nothing, smoking and flirting with some girls. Worst of all, they shifted their seats and stick their butt in front of us, stare at us from head to toe that we (the girls) have to swap places with the guys.

I ordered 20 chicken satays for take away. When I go down to collect my take aways, they give me 30 satays and sort of force me to pay for it. No way! I insisted that I wan 20 and I paid for it while swearing inside my heart.

They raised their price silently too. A chicken or beef satay costs rm 0.60 now and a lamb satay costs rm0.90.

Sorry for the poor quality of these pictures because I’m very noob in flashing my camera in very dark place. What kind of mode should I use instead of just ON the flash? You can refer to my previous post for some really nice pictures to get you drools.

We spotted Thai Fair again! We were too full after the Mexim Dim Sum so we share a bowl of Tom Yam. Satisfying

Thai Fair in South City Plaza will lasts until 1st of May. Their next stop will be at Amcorp Mall till 1st of June.
