Weekend Retreat @ Pulai Desaru Beach Resort & Spa

What’s your idea of the perfect weekend getaway? For us, it is either hiding out at a quiet resort or relaxing on the beach with a good book. One such resort that matches both criterias is Pulai Desaru Beach Resort & Spa which lies in the heart of Desaru, Johor, one of the most beautiful unspoiled beaches.

Using the new Senai-Desaru highway, our travel time is cut down by almost an hour. The final stretch from Cahaya Baru to Desaru is approximately 27 km in length. This includes the Single Plane Cable-Stayed Bridge across Sg Johor which can be seen from the above picture.

A Prime Birthday Celebration @ Prime, Le Meridien KL

My apologies for the short hiatus, I have been feeling a bit under the weather lately. Don’t worry, the hiatus is over and I’m back and armed with more (short and sweet) updates.

The first one being my “prime” birthday celebration at Le Meridien KL. My birthday falls on the 7th of March; and both number 3 and 7 are prime numbers that have exactly two distinct natural number divisors: 1 and itself. Coupled with prime grill and prime wine, it was indeed a prime birthday celebration.
IMG_8104
It was very sweet of KampungBoy for taking me out for a dinner at Prime, an upscale steak house that prides itself in serving only the finest imported beef and wines.
IMG_8118

I stepped out of my apartment all dolled up just for the special occasion. Do expect more vain pictures of me because I hardly ever wear evening dresses, especially one that makes me walk around with my stomach sucked in all evening. *blushes*

Prego @ The Westin Kuala Lumpur

IMG_6133
As a country makes up of multiracial communities of diverse culture, Malaysia celebrates a plethora of public holidays. We have nationwide holidays, statewide holidays, and heck, we even got a day off to celebrate Malaysia’s victory over Indonesia in the AFF-Suzuki Cup.

I’m not complaining here; how could anyone NOT love public holidays? First of all, there’s no work and I have absolutely no guilt over sleeping in until 11am! And slowly crawl out of my bed, get all dolled up and get my other half to bring me for a good lunch.
IMG_6137

During one of the many public holidays that we had last month, KampungBoy took me to Prego @ Westin. The rich and classy, elegant interior in Prego induces that relaxing feeling of comfort. We were seated downstairs, which features an open kitchen with a wood fired oven which added a lot to the authentic Italian atmosphere.

Prego is also offering executive set lunch for RM38++ (2 course) or RM 48++ (3 course). We went for the ala carte menu instead as the choices of mains for the set lunch were limited.

wood-fired oven roasted figs with gorgonzola sauce
IMG_6155
If you are a fan of sweet-savory combination, then this is the dish for you. Roasting slightly caramelizes the figs, making it sweet and juicy. Drizzled with a savory Gorgonzola cream sauce, the little morsels were bursting with sweet & savory flavors with rich textures. However, some slices of the figs weren’t sweet enough which make us felt akward, because all we tasted was the salty, cheesy sauce.

lasagnette di aragosta RM 61
pasta silk handkerchiefs, slipper lobster, leek confit, light bisque emulsion

True to its name, the silk handkerchiefs pasta was indeed smooth and silky. There was a generous amount of slipper lobster bits here and there. However, the bisque emulsion was way too salty, almost bitter in flavor. Although I think the saltiness tends to be present in the bisque but not necessarily so much.
IMG_6184
tibia brasata dell’agnello, risotto milanese RM 64
braised lamb shank, saffron risotto

The braisd lamb shank was tender but not to the extend of falling-off-the-bone tender. The chef on duty that day must be heavy handed when it comes to salt. The accompanied gravy was really salty too!

Pistachio Gelato (RM 6.50)

It was quite good; smooth and creamy with chunks of pistachios throughout.

All in all, we though that our food was at best mediocre. We must have picked the wrong day – with a chef that is heavy-handed with the one particular seasoning! Or are we expecting too much from The BEST Italian Restaurant in TimeOut KL Food Award 2010? I’m always open to giving a place a second chance unless it was just a horrendous experience. Furthermore, reviews I read online has been nothing but rave reviews. So we’ll be back, before our Starwood Card expired.

Bridge Bar, GTower – Day & Night

IMG_9855
Bridge Bar is an exclusive and intimate bar located at the sky bridge linking the twin GTower buildings on the 28th floor. By exclusive I mean it is strictly accessible by hotel guests and club members only. However, the management  indicated that they will be opening to the public in near term. Hurray!! members of the public wishing to visit the Bridge Bar will be charged a RM50 cover charge which includes 1 drink, payable at the Front Counter of The Club.

The place is beautiful during the day, as well as when the night falls. Let’s see…

DAY

Set high above the modern hustle & bustle of KL, Bridge Bar is a perfect place to get an bird’s eye view of the city.

The bar is a modern and stylish watering hole. I especially love those reflective glass ceilings – everything looks better with a glass ceiling!

Five Elements Mooncake from Toh Lee, Nikko Hotel

IMG_3689
It’s that time of the year again. When the moon is at its roundest, children light lanterns and families devour mooncake which symbolizes reunion.

Nothing is more synonymous with the moon festival than the mooncake. It seems like hotels and restaurants have an early start on moon cake this year. The flavor selection is also getting better each year. Truffles, durian,  birdnest, cheese, bacon, you name it, they have got it.
IMG_3697
We were fortunate enough to be invited for an early sampling of Toh Lee’s latest mooncake offerings with an unique theme of “Five Elements”.
IMG_3669

Toh Lee has also put a lot of thoughts in the the packaging. The octagon boxes with 8 sides carry auspicious colors of red and yellow. It just make a perfect gift to friends and families, and perhaps future in laws? :)
