Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen @ TTDI

IMG_4279_small

The battle of fried chicken has now begin in……TTDI where two of the largest quick-service chicken restaurant group (measured by number of units) were seen sitting opposite to each other, luring customers with their very eye-catchy signboards. It was not until last week that we have decided to check out the (relatively) swanky new place.

Well, we might be the last flogger to write about them but better late than never right?

We had the dinner plate (RM 11.95 nett) with 3 pieces of spicy fried chicken, mashed potatoes, coleslaw and a cookie. When compared to Kentucky’s Fried Chicken, Popeye’s version is less oily with crunchier skin but it tastes pretty bland. Even the spicy version is not spicy of all, or is it that our taste bud has gone wrong?

We really like the little cookie that comes with our set. It’s like a cross between scone and bread – chewy outside and soft inside. Very good stuff especially when eaten hot!

The  smooth mash potatoes with the minced meat sauce fares pretty well. The slightly spicy bown sauce with traces of minced meat is very appetizing. No complains on the fresh, crunchy coleslaw with the right amount of dressing too.

The chicken finger is nothing to shout about. It’s like another variant of the cajun fried chicken but boneless. It tastes much better when dipped into the mashed potatoes with brown sauce. All in all, we still prefer Kentucky Fried Chicken anytime but wouldn’t mind returning for Popeye’s side dishes.

KFC Zinger Tower

banner

We were wandering around One Utama last week. One Utama is buzzing with activities as many people started to do their last minute shopping as the Chinese New Year is fast approaching.

To avoid the crowd, we wanted to sit down and grab a quick bite somewhere. My appetite goes thru the roof staring at the attractive banner ad of the new zinger tower and the classic KFC smell leaded us into it. The next thing we know is that we were already queuing behind the counter.

The Zinger Tower Set

I (kinda) forced KampungBoy to take the Zinger Tower Set (RM 15.90) which comprises of  1 zinger tower, 1 pepsi max (R), 1 mango pudding & 1 zinger time watch. I needed a non metallic, i.e. plastic watch for my weekly hike but was too kiam siap to spend on one.

zinger tower

The burger looked impressive; with layers of soft bun, fresh lettuce, zinger fillet, cheese, hash brown and a dressing of zesty chili lime sauce. I slowly but surely devoured my zinger tower, and talk about hitting the spot! Personally, I love the refreshing and citrusy chili lime sauce (despite some thinks that it tastes like dish washer) and the oh-so-crispy hash brown.

zinger time watch

My fat stubby fingers and my new outdoor watch in vibrant yellow. Nice?

Talking about putting my own waste-line at great personal risk to answer the question “is the zinger tower a total rip off?” Well, go for the ala carte zinger tower (RM 6.60) or the X meal set (RM 10.50) with an additional chicken drumstick and drink which give more value for money if you are not interested on the zinger time watch (RM 9.90 with every chicken meal purchased). KampungBoy, can I have another three colors of the zinger time watch please? One for hiking, one for running and another one for tennis.

BBQ Chicken @ Jaya One, Petaling Jaya

P1270998

“Its not barbeque. It’s best of the best quality”

With more than 30 restaurants to choose from, Jaya One offers a great hang out place for PJ people. It has become our little playground ever since, since parking is not an issue and comes free with every RM 30 spent at any restaurant. Most of the restaurants are located around the Palm Square zone and Wai Sik Kai zone.

Few weeks back, we found ourselves back to Jaya One again. We wanted to go for dim sum at Duck King but the long queue has put us off so we ended up at Korean BBQ eventually. BBQ Chicken is the No. 1 franchise brand in Korea with outlets around China, Spain, Japan, USA, Vietnam, Australia, Mongolia, Malaysia and Singapore. Self acclaiming as the no.1 chicken restaurant in Korea, they took discernible pride in their chicken dishes (obviously) and one of the main selling points would be frying the chicken in extra virgin oil.

We went for the super good value “lunch special”, which is valid daily from 11am to 2pm. One can choose from burgers & breads, olive, barbeque, beef & fish that comes with free soup, drinks and a single scoop ice cream.

My order of charbroiled chicken is moist, tender and delicious and the amazingly sweet and spicy marinade permeated through every bite.

The spicy fried chickens from the olive series are really good too. Coated with layers of sticky spicy sauce, the skin had a very good crunch and great spicy flavor. Despite being truly finger-licking good, this is a multi-napkin chicken.

Prices here are definitely higher than the Kentucky Fried Chicken where the total bill came about RM 30. However, I wouldn’t mind paying more for the super crunchy fried chicken that is oh so healthy and the attentive services.
