Lotus Root with Fish Paste

Grand Imperial is one of my favourite dim sum place in KL; you’ll see us stuffing ourselves silly with dim sum when the pay cheque’s out. During days when moolah runs low, we’ll resort to our favourite neighbourhood dim sum restaurant Jin Xuan.

My colleagues have raved about the food, and one of them chose to have his wedding reception here! We took their words for it and dropped by one morning. There was no turning back ever since. Usually we are here early to enjoy a quiet morning sipping Chinese tea and reading newspaper, just before the crazy crowd, otherwise known as the lunch crowd, comes in.

Lotus Root with Fish Paste. We were all enticed by the name so I put a big tick on the order sheet. I love the crunchy texture of the lotus root. The fish paste was really smooth and springy too.

The gun tong gao 灌汤饺 (RM12) is probably one of the most expensive dim sum item in the menu but it was worth every single cents. The huge dumpling was filled with a generous amount of pork meat, shark fin stripes and dried scallops. The soup was so clear and so sweet that it’s almost like a sin if you can’t finish em’ all.

Xiao Long Bao 小龙包. The broth within was sweet and flavorful but the skin was too thick for my liking.

Not to be missed is the fame Century Egg and Shredded Pork Porridge. The congee has a viscous and velvety smooth texture and it was neither too thick nor watery. Even KampungBoy who hates congee gave his two thumbs up, another exception being Mui Kee from Hong Kong.

Stir Fried Raddish Cake with XO Sauce. Delightfully flavourful but not too oily.

you get what you tick

The grand entrance of Grand Imperial

A meal for two will usually cost RM50 – RM70 but I’m not complaining seeing that the dim sums were made to order and things are less chaotic here, i.e. no table hogging and no fighting for dim sums from the pushing carts.

With my bed hair and early morning sleepy eyes, I wrote my name on the perpetual waiting list at Jing Xuan and stand by the road side with a bunch of hungry people who loves their morning fix. “What’s with these DJ people? I can easily make money by opening a decent dim sum place around Atria!” I can’t help but to keep complaining.

Glad that we manage to secure a table after a mere 20 minutes or else kampungboy will drown in my grumpy mood. <strike>Unofficial sources were saying that Kam Hin, Hong Kee, Jing Xuan, apparently are all the same. If this is true, Hong Kee has taken the right cue and opened the doors of a second restaurant of different name and different concept few streets away.</strike> Thanks to Eiling! A good part of the dim sum crowd is diverted to Jing Xuan.

Variety is the key word here, from the usual dim sum fare to marmite pork ribs, buns and pastries. The century egg congee (RM3.50) brings a smile to my face. Other than the usual century egg and minced pork, some sinful blob of salted egg yolk were added in too.

KampungBoy reckons that the deep fried prawn roll is one of the best, fresh and luscious prawn shrouds within the thin and light skin had the right amount of crunchy bite.
No complains on the Cabbage Roll (RM 3.50) too, with a generous amount of chicken, mushroom and chinese waxed sausages hidden beneath the pliable cabbage blanket.

I would recommend the egg tart with flaky crust, very aromatic stir fried raddish cake, warm and fluffy char siu bao and har gao with huge succulent prawns. Price is rather reasonable too, a decent meal for two comes less than RM30 most of the time. In a nut shell, it is best to drop by during the week days if you wish to stay awhile and soak up the tranquil atmosphere while indulging in some good dim sums.

Just browse through the menu, tick your choice and pass it to the serving staff. The dim sum will be served right away.

Century Egg and Lean Meat Porridge (RM 2.50). The porridge was nothing fantastic but the crispy fried crullers came to rescue. Kampungboy is managed to track a few tiny chunks of century eggs and lean porks from the porridge.

Mango Tong Yuan (RM4). They mixed mango juice with glutinous rice ball to form the dough and the filling is some mango puree.

The puree is oozing out! The tong yuan mixed with mango juice is a bit powdery and thick and somehow I hate the puree, it tastes so artificial. The jelakness filled me after one or two balls, we should have order only one bowl of it.

Sunshine Bao (RM 3). This is good stuff! The orange yellow coloured bao is filled with something that tastes like the mixture of salted egg yolk and custard. The sweetness is not too empowering and I’m a big fans of salted egg yolk.

The place was cooling and comfortable. Dim Sum are available through out the day. With such reasonable price and quality ensured, we will definitely come back again to try out some innovative items such as phoenix eye, cheese-around, lily scallop roll and mango banana prawn fritters.

But personally i think that Ming Court Dim Sum is the best Dim Sum in Ipoh. Maybe its because of my childhood memory. Every Sunday, Dad would take us to Yum Cha and we went to Ming Court quite frequently. Please dun get me wrong, as there’s no Ming Court Hotel in Ipoh, it’s simply MING COURT HK DIM SUM. Do take note that they are closed on Thursday.

Again, each dim sum place has their own specialty, as mentioned in my previous post, Foh San is famous for their egg tarts, char siu bao, glutinious rice with chicken and Har Gao. Ming Court ‘s specialty would be Yu Mai (fish ball in elongated shape), taro puff and Guai Fei Bao (Bao with lotus paste and egg yolk).

So plan your makan schedule now so that you can eat the best stuff of both place, ie 730 am Foh San and head to Ming Court at 8.30 am. Who can get enough of good dim sums???

KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL/KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL - A MALAYSIAN FOOD & TRAVEL BLOG

Dear Blog (and Dear Readers):

Sorry for the negligance of 3 whole weeks. My laptop breaks down and I lost most of my precious food pictures. It’s a tragic for me indeed. I have tonnes of stuff that would like to be shared with you guys.

The first week of holiday we had an Makan Makan Around Perak thingy and our tummy is in bloated form every single say (too bad most of the pictures are..sigh), second week of the holiday we had a gathering for the CHINs as well as a grand birthday bash for my (paternal side) grandma, third week of holidays I was caught busy for my cousin’s big day.

So stay tune and lotsa yummylicious food pictures will be posted.

The ever famous Foh San dim sum is a famous haunt by tourists for some scrumptious and variety of dim sum. It is so famous that it had become a landmark for outstation people, like Lou Wong Taugeh Chicken is behind Foh San, Funny Mountain taufufah is opposite Foh San. But if you ask any Ipoh people, they will recommend Ming Court or Yoke Fook Moon instead of Foh San.

A little advise here, go as early as 7 am or as late as 11 am because it is hard to get a table here. Bring ur bill to the cart and take your own dim sum as the waitress will be too busy to entertain you. The best is going there early in the Sunday morning as they have some special items that are only available on Sunday.

Yawn ** We need some Chinese tea to stimulate our appetite! Oooo and the tea are counted by head. 10 people there means that you have to order tea for 10 heads, not any number less than that.

Feast your eyes with these lovely pictures~ I’m trying my best to name the dim sum here:

However if there’s only a few of you try their Har Gao (you’ll be amazed by the amount of prawns found beneath the crystal clear skin), Char siu bao (how nice izzit? they have frozen version of char siu bao sold at major supermarkets), egg tarts (people from outstation often buy the egg tarts in batch as souvenirs).
