Finally our Bali travelogue is coming to an end! Did I just hear some sigh of relief? It took us almost 6 months to complete the travel posts of a mere four days trip. I’m such a procrastinator, hehe!

Towards the last day of our trip, we did some last minute shopping at Pasar Seni Sukawati. Don’t bother to buy anything from other markets or tourist destinations because in Sukawati Market you can get the exact same stuff at a very low price.

Do remember that it is obligatory to BARGAIN at Sukawati Market. We bought the Buddha painting for IDR 70,000/RM 26, which is a steal. Not to forget our summer rattan bags (~50,000/RM 18), beaded sandals (~IDR 15000/RM 5.5), wood carvings (~RM5-20, depending on size), hand made photo album (~RM4), etc.

If you like shopping, Sukawati is a heaven. ‘Nuff said!

Next stop: Pura Tirta Empul, Tampaksiring. It is known as one of six most important temples in Bali.

Upon entrance, there is a long rectangular pool carved of stone, filled with koi and fed by the sacred spring via 12 fountains

the sacred spring is said to have been created by Indra and to have curative properties

it draws throngs of worshipers and tourists to the site everyday

We had a wander around the enormous temple site and were impressed by the splendid architecture.

Overlooking the temple on a hill above sitted a very modern building: the Government Palace, built in 1954. It was a former resident hall for former Indonesian President Soekarno.

the lovely pair, C&C.

We hopped onto the car and continued our journey to Kintamani. A touristy thing to do here is to have buffet lunches at one of the many restaurants that sit by the hill side. The temperature is usually about 15 degrees cooler than the ground, so please bring along your jackets/cardigans.

Most restaurants share the spectacular view of Mount Batur and Lake Batur.

Our driver dropped us at Grand Puncak Sari restaurant and after some negotiation, we went in. Yes, you can even negotiate for your buffet lunch! We ended up paying IDR 70,000 per person + 21% tax/RM31 instead of IDR 85,000 + 21% tax. The buffet spread was impressive, but the food was cold and nothing to shout about.

If you do come upon any good buffet places at Kintamani area, do share with us. I’m sure our readers will appreciate your help.

Our last stop was Tegalalang Terrace. The view of these sculptured rice terraces is just spectacular.

It is also a good place to do some shopping as we saw abundance of wooden carvings that are displayed along the road.

Just a sweet reminder here: as far as shopping in Bali is good, remember to keep IDR 150,000/RM 55 to pay for departure tax when leaving Bali airport.

Apart from the overrated Ibu Oka Babi Guling, Bebek Bengil that is well-known for its crispy fried duck is another eating establishment located in Ubud, Bali. We made it a point to drop by towards the end of our holiday in Bali.

The name Bebek Bengil/Dirty Duck has made it big across the region and internationally but have you ever wondered what does the name means? Well here’s the story extracted from the menu’s front page.

“One tropical monsoon morning, when the restaurant was very close to being finished ( we had the concrete floor down, and the tables in ), a flock of ducks from the rice field across the road ( yes, there were rice fields all around us then ) ran quacking and squawking into the restaurant and across the floor and tables. They left muddy webbed footprints all over the place. They were our first guests – those dirty ducks !”

The place is huge – with an outdoor garden nicely lit and a two- story Octagon Villa that fits 80 pax.

We booked in advance for the best spot in one of the huts by the rice fields. The whole alfresco dining experience is great! We got to enjoy the lovely evening breeze while listening to the vague background of traditional Balinese music.

Let’s feast!

We just have to try their signature dish – the Bebek Bengil/Crispy Duck (rp.68,000 / MYR25.00) after hearing so much about it. It was well marinated and the duck was so crispy that you can eat the bones along. However, we found some part of the duck to be a tad too dry and requires some jaw exercises.

There are a few dishes that need to be ordered a day in advance and the Balinese Smoked Duck (rp.187,000 / MYR68.00) is one of it. The sizeable set came with half a duck, side vegetables, satay with peanut sauce, white rice, onion dippings and chili sauce.

The Balinese Smoked Duck gets our votes. The herbal marinate is loaded with flavour, and seeps into the duck meat really well. The meat is so tender that it literally falls off the bone when you bite into it. The huge portion can also easily feed 3 person even though it was originally meant for 2 (according to the wait staff).

a great dish of “bumbu bali” (translated as spice blend, of authentic traditional Balinese cuisine)

Bebek Bengil is an absolutely beautiful restaurant. Though there is some hits and misses on the food, the low lighting and lovely decor make this a place to remember.

From Pura Taman Ayun, we hope onto the MPV and continued our journey to Bratan Lake. Located next to inactive volcanos Mount Bratan and Mount Catur, it is the second largest lake in Bali.

At 1000 metres above sea level, the weather is very cooling and comfortable over here. One of the main attraction here is the Pura Ulun Danu, a beautiful temple dedicated to Dewi Danu, the Lake Goddess.

The temple is sacred to the Balinese people, who come here to pray and leave offerings to the god.

The temple is surrounded by a beautiful manicured garden with flowers and statues.
We found some good photos taking spots while we were walking towards the most photographed temple in Bali.

The temple sits on the western shore of Lake Bratan and it looks as if it is floating on the water. It is a beautiful temple with stunningly beautiful background.
Towards the end of the trip wevisited the Tanah Lot Temple, one of the most popular places of interest in Bali.

Perched on a little rocky islet and facing the sea, Tanah Lot is a famous destination to see the spectacular view of sun set.

As the sun goes down, we left Tanah Lot feeling all famished and tired. Guess where we headed for dinner? We have done Warung Made, Babi Guling and Warung Nuri in Day 1 & Day 2. There is another must go restaurant in Ubud, Bali.

Our Bali trip is all about spa, food and sight seeing but not so much of sun and surf. Throughout the four days trip, we have visited quite a handful of temples and the Pura Taman Ayun (“Garden Temple in the Water”) is one of them.

Pura Taman Ayun was the royal temple of I Gusti Agung Anom, the founder of the Mengwi kingdom. Originally dating from 1634, it was restored and enlarged in 1937. Entrance fee is IDR3000 (RM1) per person.
It was drizzling by the time we got there. See how the poor cat seek shelter from the cold rain.

The pouring rain did not dampen our spirits at all.

KampungBoy wanted to capture the sorrowful and melancholic feel of the rain and the ancient temple. Gung ho!

and I shall be the dedicated umbrella holder.

We reached the place by 1030am, because the guys wanted to good pictures sans the crowd. Such dedicated photographers!

The menu. The obligatory order is the “special” with a little bit of everything. One can also opt for skin only or meat only portion.

We took off your shoes before heading into the dining area. We sat on the floor and waited patiently for our “babi” to arrive.

As the clock was ticking away, we saw a lady who carry a basket on her head. Could that be the long awaited babi guling? No! It was just the rice, false alarm apparently.

Lo and behold! The pig arrived, and it was really huge one!

The crowd started pouring in, with a mix of locals and tourists like. Most of the locals opted for take away while the tourists will choose to dine in and whip out their camera from time to time. How typical!

Our ‘special’ plate (IDR25,000 / RM9.20 ) contains a little bit of everything: meat, skin, blood sausage, stir fried green beans along side with some spicy signature gravy.

We though that Ibu Oka was rather over rated. The skin was so jaw-breakingly hard and chewy. While the meat was tender and the spicy gravy sauce has some elements of ‘bumbu Bali’, it was still nothing to shout about.

*Bumbu means spice paste and bumbu Bali is apparent in the Balinese day to day cooking.

Ibu Oka Babi Guling
After a rather dissappointing meal (maybe we set our expectations too high) at Ibu Oka, we walked over to Pasar Ubud for some retail therapy!

The knick knacks here are really pretty but the price was a bit steep if we were to compare it to Sukawati Market. However, some of the nicer stuff that we saw here is not available at Sukawati market. So it is better to go to Sukawati before you do another round of shopping at Pasar Ubud.

Next up: Pura Ulu Danu @ Bratan Lake, Bedugul, Tanah Lot and Bebek Bengil (Dirty Duck Diner’s)

One of the highlights of our Bali Trip is the amazing stay in Tegal Sari, Ubud. From RP300,000 (RM110) to RP 600,000 (RM 220) (+10% tax), it was really worth the money paid for. Service was impeccable! The staffs were really helpful and friendly; and it is not any worst than some of the 5 stars hotels out there.

Our wooden room (RP 400,000) that overlooks the paddy field is beautiful! I absolutely adore the bed with canopy and the huge bath tub.

DO keep in mind that reservation need to be made at least 3 months in advance as the rooms are really limited. Upfront payment are required via TT or by credit card with an additional charge of 1.8%. Just drop them an email for enquiries.

We rate Naughty Nuri’s Warung and Grill as one of the best restaurants we have dined at in Bali throughout our four days trip. Their ribs were outstanding – so tender and the meat falls right off the bone easily.

This unpretentious roadside shack is run by Indonesian Nuri Suryatmi and her affable New Yorker husband Brian Aldinger. Other than Bebek Bengil, it is also another eating establishment in Ubud. The patrons profile is a mixture of tourists and local.

The setting is really basic with some mismatched furnitures, paintings and photos of regulars with the owner Brian.Patrons can opt for open air seating next to the outdoor barbecue pit too.

Daily specials are written on the chalkboard. If you are lucky, they might offer babi guling on certain days.

Even Anthony Bourdain has been here. Don’t play play!

Drinks are certainly not cheap here. It is better to go for Bintang beer draft or martinis the next time you are here.

We needed some carbs to go with the ribs so wedges it is. Made upon order, the wedges arrived piping hot.

We also ordered some pork satays for the “variety” reason. Don’t bother and stick to the ribs.

Ribs, glorious ribs. Thanks to the blatant use of kecap manis (an Indonesian sweet soy sauce), the ribs were grilled until the sauce reduces to a sticky, caramelised coating. It felt like eating char siew off the bone, sans the fat some more. It was so addictive.

The after math – a clear evidence of the tender ribs with a nice pull off the bone. The best part? It costs only IDR 70,000 (RM 27) for a huge slab.

We started off the day with an early breakfast at Made (Pronounced Mah-deh) Warung, Jalan Pantai Kuta. The restaurant specializes in local Balinese food, as well as Japanese and Western cooking. During lunch hour or dinner hour, the place is often filled to the brim, seeing that it is a famous eatery for the tourists and the like.

It is a very famous eating establishment in Bali but the food did not live up to our expectations. The food was not too cheap either; we paid IDR 185000/RM 68 for 4 person and we left feeling unsatisfied and hungry.

We also spent some time walking around Kuta Town and visited the Ground Zero Memorial on the site of the Bali Bombing that occurred on 12 October 2002. The final death toll was 202.
We bid good bye to Kuta Town officially when Mr. Bagus came to pick us up at 11am.
Next destination – Nusa Dua Beach

Famous for its crystal clear water and stretches of white sandy beach; Nusa Dua is the home of many luxurious resorts.

Banana boats, water scooters, water skiing, jet skis, wave runners, windsurfers, and parasailing are also available here. One can also negotiate for a best price on these water activities (towards the end of the trip, we realized that almost everything is negotiable, including food!).

We continued doing what we do best (cam-whoring) because we did not bring along a spare change of clothing.

source
We also visited tirtha uluwatu, one of the most beautiful wedding chapel in Bali island! However, no pictures are allowed though. The usherer walked us through the chapel and the facilities such as bar, restaurants, bride’s room, etc. The beautiful scenery and brilliant architecture made me gasp and exclaim “Wow!” out loud.

source
So beautiful right? Wedding package starts from USD 4500 by the way.

We were suppose to visit Dreamland and Beber Beach subsequently. Since we are not a fan of water sports or sun bathing, we proceeded to Wayan Spa at Nusa Dua upon recommendation from our driver. A two full hours of pampering session costs IDR 300,000/RM 110 per person. It’s more expensive compared to other spa centres in Ubud as some of them offered IDR 300,000 for 4.5 hr!

The Balinese interior gave me a creepy feeling. Well, it’s just me.

All that scrubbing and rubbing makes our stomach growl. Mr. Bagus brought us to some random nasi padang stall by the road side.

Teh Botol and Jus Botol – our staple drink in Bali island.

Uluwatu Temple (Pura Luhur Uluwatu) is a popular place to enjoy the sunset in Bali.Located high on a cliff top at the edge of a plateau, it is also one of the oldest temples in Bali. Entrance fee is IDR 3000/RM1.1 per person and you need to be properly dressed to enter.

Kecak dance performance (IDR 70,000) is held here everyday where tourists can enjoy the performance with a spectacular sun set view. We didn’t go for it because friends have been telling us that the dance was dull and boring. :p

The monkeys are most notorious over here.

Please keep a very close grip on all your belongings especially glasses, handbags, cameras and hand accessories. A poor lady was frantically looking for the monkey that snatched her glasses and another small Caucasian girl cried because the monkey snatched her hair clip away. The monkeys can usually be induced to exchange it for some food and you have to buy it from the temple priests for a fee!
We were very disappointed because clouds or bad weather obscure the sun set view but a very good meal at Warung Nuri made up for it. Yes, it was so good that it deserves a post on its own. Stay tune!

doing some last minute planning at LCCT

Got our tickets for RM 80 from the Air Asia zero fare sales a year ago and in a blink of an eye, we were all ready for our Bali trip!

Our driver, Mr. Bagus picked us up from the airport and sent us straight to Jimbaran Beach for dinner. I’ve got a lot of emails asking about Mr. Bagus, so I’ll share my opinions here. You can reach him at <gelo82181@yahoo.com>

The Good:
Mr. Bagus is very accommodating; just tell him where you want to go and he’s willing to bring you there. He will never persuade or push us to visit those touristy shopping places where he’ll probably get a fair share of comission. The rate that he charged (IDR 300,000/day/car) is quite reasonable because we engaged him for a full day, i.e. 10am to 10pm (depends on our itinerary).

The Bad
Mr. Bagus is not a very professional tour guide in the sense that he never walk us through the touristy destination and explain to us the historic value/the story behind it.

So I’ll leave it for you guys to judge? Another point to keep in mind – it is better to plan your own itinerary and ask for the driver’s opinion because most of the tourist spots are scattered around the island.
p/s: Don’t be surprised if you see a Mr. Bagus that looks very different from our driver. The whole Bagus family runs the tour hiring services so they might send just anyone from the family. Our driver was Gutstut Bagus.
Jimbaran Beach is famous for the fresh seafood kiosks that are scattered along the beach. Diners would usually have their dinner with a perfect sun set view over here.

Patrons can enjoy the romantic dinner with some romantic tunes as well.

The guys bought some barbecued corn-on-cob for IDR 10000/RM3.65 to cure our hunger pangs before the food came.

I believe that most of you have heard a lot of horror stories about the cut throat price of a Jimbaran beach dinner. We did some research online and it suggested that the safest bet would be Lia’s or Sharkeys.

We took two seafood packages, and portions were huge enough to feed 5-6 people. Most sets come with coconut drink/Bintang Beer, vegetables, soups, salads, sauces and rice.

Paket A (IDR 180,000/ RM64) – portion for 2 pax
With 7 pcs of prawns, 6 pcs of clams, 0.5kg fish, 0.5mg squids, their different types of sauces, coconut juice, salad, rice, vegetables & fruits.

The seafood grilled over a fire of coconut husks rather than charcoal that gave it a delicious smoky flavor.

Paket C (IDR 290,000/ RM103) – portion for 2 pax
With 0.5kg lobsters, 0.5kg crabs, 7 pcs of prawns, 6 pcs of clams, their different types of sauces, Bintang beers, salad, rice, vegetables & fruits.

The prawns were not very fresh and the “lobster” looked more like a crayfish. However, it was quite a decent meal with a reasonable pricing. The various dipping sauces enhanced the flavors of the seafood really well.

Just request your driver to drive you to the end of Jalan Pemelisan Agung and Lia’s Cafe is on your right after a two minute walk.

We then checked into Tune Hotel after dinner. We paid IDR 285000/RM 85 for a double room; inclusive of 12 hours air conditioning, excluding toiletries & towels.

We love the good location (6 mins walk from Kuta Beach, within main shopping & dining area of Jalan Pantai Kuta) and the clean, no frills room. Great for the first day of our trip, since we have to rise early on the next day.

coffee sampling at Yoga Plantation

Kopi Luwak! Forget about Jamaican Blue Mountain, Kona, Tanzanian Peaberry, etc. It was Kopi Luwak who conquers the hearts of many coffee lovers.

Kopi Luwak comes from the islands of Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi. On these Indonesian islands, there’s a tree-dwelling animal that climb among the coffee trees eating only the ripest, reddest coffee cherries. The local natives gather up the limited amount of the Luwak processed parchment coffee, remove the parchment shell, and ultimately ship it to the coffee broker.

The enzymes in the animals’ stomachs, though, appear to add something unique to the coffee’s flavor through fermentation attribute to the unusual flavors to the natural fermentation the coffee beans undergo in luwak’s digestive system. The stomach acids and enzymes are very different from fermenting beans in water.

We got to try the most expensive coffee in the world during our recent trip to Bali. The price? IDR 30,000 (RM11) for a small shot.

Chris savouring Kopi Luwak

Seriously, with that price, we were not sure whether we are getting the real deal. Wikipedia stated that it is selling for between US $100 and $600 per pound. And almost half of the Luwak beans are fake, as we heard.

Amateur coffee drinkers like us can’t even tell the difference! It was complex with bitter and caramel taste and it smelled musty. Honestly, though, this coffee doesn’t really live up to the hype (if we really drank the genuine kopi luwak lar; but we’ll never find out). Its not bad, but its just not good enough to warrant such a premium price.

If you are still interested to take a sip, do drop by Yoga Plantation at Mengwi, Bali. RM11 is small price to pay for the experience after all.

I know you guys love this; so here you go.

NOTE:

SEE = sightseeing

EAT = dining options

STAY = accomodation of the night

BOLD = recommended

non BOLD = not recommended

IDR 10,000 = RM 3.65

I’ve got a lot of emails asking about the driver Mr.
