Dreamz Bakery @ The Strand, Kota Damansara

Dreams come true they do
Dreams come true
From all of us to all of you they do

Don’t you know that dreams come true
Love is just a second away
(Better take a look inside)
Make that magic rule, let the miracle stay
(You gotta take a look inside)

Dreams Come True, Westlife

The dream of running a small cafe has nothing to do with the excitement of entrepreneurship or the joys of being one’s own boss—it’s all about one’s passion and enthusiasm. Such is a case of Dreamz Bakery. It is a love story about a pastry chef (the boy) and a designer (the girl). They both shared the same dream – opening their own cafe. That dream came to fruition when the boy had decided to return home from Singapore where he received training and the girl graduated from a design school.

Dreamz Bakery is small but warm. Customers can choose to sit on a bar top table on the right with high stools or a floor seating area on the left. The affable staffs and owner always smile brightly and the cafe design is kitschy without being cliche. The interior is quite simple; there are no fancy lampshades, mass-manufactured furniture or expensive paintings, but they focused on delivering personal touches. I love the wall adored with portraits of the café’s regular, the pink polka dot table cloth and the quirky guest book which allows us to sit in one corner scribbling and drawing.

Apart from specialising in artisan cakes and desserts, wedding cakes and occasion cakes (birthday, anniversary), there are also cookies for sale. We tried quite a variety of those cookies, and boy they tasted good! My favourite was the kitty almond cookies and chocolate chip nut cookies. I got my Latte (RM 7.50) while Ivy got her Cappuccino (RM 6.90). I thought my coffee was nothing to shout about. The yam cake (RM 9) was moist and dense, but surprisingly leave a light feeling in my mouth, and just sweet enough. Chocolate Mille Crepe (RM 9) was a tad too “flourly” and thick to my liking.

All in all, Dreamz Café is open for anyone seeking great company to come together and enjoy a leisurely afternoon. Here are some photos of this cozy cafe design:

Tommy Le Baker @ Viva Residency, Jalan Ipoh

Located inside a shop lot behind Viva Residency; Tommy Le Baker is a hidden gem of a great taste experience. Having live in France for over a decade, Tommy returned home and started his own pastry venture here. I was there on a rainy evening and chatted with Tommy about the place. Desserts are taken very seriously in French culture, Tommy said. He also deters mass-producing desserts with artificial colouring and flavouring. Hence, Tommy’s creation are 100% au natural with no preservatives or sugar added. He is also a traditionalist, with emphasis on craftsmanship in bread making.

When I ate that sourdough bread I could taste his passion for his product, and the heart and soul that turned mere dough into a masterpiece. My only gripe was the limited choices available – sourdough country bread, wholemeal bread, normand bread, grains and cereal bread, traditional French baguette, croissants, quiches and the occassional sweet offerings. I was told to come back towards the end of December as his apprentice is coming back to join Tommy.

I can’t wait!

Uncle Jang Korean Restaurant & Nabe Bakery @ Ampang

IMG_5935
Thanks to Chris who discovered Uncle Jang from their Facebook page, the glowing review sparked our interest and our curiosity get the better of us. Hence, we were all set to sample the famous Chuncheon Dak Galbi dish in Ampang few days back.

Dak Galbi is a popular South Korean dish where marinated chicken cubes are stir fried in a go chu jang (chili pepper paste) sauce together with cabbage, sweet potato, scallions, onions and tteok (rice cake) on a hot plate. Dak Galbi originates from Chuncheon, Gangwan Province. Hence the dish is also called Chuncheon Chicken (春川炒辣鸡). It is also known as the commoners galbi or university student galbi because of it’s huge portion and reasonable pricing. So occasionally, tummy fillers like cheese, ramen, udon and rice are thrown in.

One can choose to sit on floor cushions or chairs at this popular no-frills restaurant. Food will be served on a cast iron hot plate that is situated in the center of every table. We were there early, but soon after the place was bursting at the seems with mostly Korean patrons, almost 80% of them – always a good sign.

RT Pastry House, a Taiwanese bakery is so famous that they need no further introduction. Other than the outlet in Danau Desa, they have another two outlets located at Subang Jaya and IOI Boulevard.

I love their cheese cakes; the blueberry cheese cake (RM 4.50) to be specific. It is lighter than usual, but the cheese flavor is very rich and intense. And for some reasons, blueberries always go well with cheese.

Tong Kee Brother Confectionary @ Damansara Uptown

P1300369

Just a piece of good news for PJ folks – the undisputed king of egg tart is now at Damansara Uptown.

Feeling rather sluggish on a Sunday afternoon, we drove out to have a quick lunch and stumble upon Tong Kee. Upon entrance, we were greeted by a comforting aroma of fresh bread and sights of pretty cakes and colorful pastries glowing from a bright showcase. Their “non halal” buns that incorporates the use of lards, bacons or hams deserves a special mention as its a rare sight in any other bakeries.

We had the butter pastry egg tarts (RM1.50) and flaky pastry egg tarts(RM1.30), which are all good! The butter version is totally different form the flaky version that we are all familiar with, with its buttery and crispier texture. By far, Tong Kee is where you can find the best egg tart within Klang Valley, but my favourite egg tart remains with Choy Kee at Simee Market, Ipoh (I’ll snap some pictures and do a review on that soon!). Meanwhile, to satisfy my sudden craving for egg tarts, Tong Kee would be the obvious choice.

Kedai Makanan Nam Heong @ Ipoh Old Town

ipoh old town

Old Town is always a pride of Ipoh people with the origination of White Coffee, curry noodles who made their name to foreign land, hor hee that attracts patrons from other states and other scrumptious variety of food. For me, it is a place that stir up nostalgia because it is a place where my parents brought me for afternoon tea since young before Starbucks, Coffee Bean or the air conditioned Old Town Kopitiam came along.

Enough said about the aromatic white coffee at Nam Heong. I’m going to introduce this particular dim sum stall that gained their popularity through the hot selling egg tarts and cha siu pastry. It is rare to see patrons that can resist the buttery-smelling pastry. Over 1000 tarts are sold on normal days but the sales shot up to double during public holidays.

With the flaky pastry shells, the egg tart looks like it would fall apart any time. Handle with care, it exclaimed. I was expecting a somehow gooey smooth and silky egg custard but it falls short of my expectation.

cha siu ouff

Anyway, the cha siu pastry is to die for! Succulent barbequed pork in sweet sauce is embedded in a parcel of crispy, flaky puff pastry. Need me to say more?

Kedai Makanan Nam Heong

Macarons Class with Sunny Yaw

Macarons? Is it the coconut laced chewy cookies? Not to be confused over macaroons and macarons, macaron is actually these ethereal dome-shaped cookies with a beautiful ruffled layer beneath. Not to forget the heart melting cream filling sandwiched between.

It is something that I wanted to experiment with since ages ago those horror stories about macaron failure refrained me from doing so. Glad that I joined Sunny’s class, I realized that with the right technique and ingredients, baking macarons is such a breeze!!

So I’ll let the pictures do the talking while you guys gasped (or rather surprise that this girl also can bake?!).

J.Co Donuts & Coffee @ Pavillion

P1160863

Watch out for the new donut chain in town! J.Co is quietly going on a growth tear where the perpetual line never dries up. I was delighted when Sid told me that the PR & Promotion Executive, Miss Intan invited us floggers to know more about how J.Co has come along.

P1160839

Spare me some time for a historical review, will you? The Managing Director, Johnny Andrean, a renowned hair stylist in Indonesia is a big donuts fan. It has motivated him to open up the first J.Co outlet in Indonesia at June 26. As per day, there are 26 outlets throughout Indonesia and it has been expanding abroad to Bukit Bintang Malaysia, soon at Sunway Pyramid Malaysia and Singapore.

P1160832

Every outlet has different design and ambiance where the Pavillion outlet is more to the hip and hype type with denim and leather as the main concept with jeans button lighting design, custom made denim lounge and some really cute story board table. The main attraction here is clearly the impressive vertical dotted line resembling zips and the long array of J.Co cuppies.

The Making of J.Co’s Donuts

1. First, the imported special premix is mixed and thawed for two hours until it blends well to form a dough. It is then bake in the oven before it is shaped into individual donuts shape – normal, round and crown, using a donut cutter.

2. 20 pieces of donuts are placed in each tray before it is send in to the chiller (normal temperature)

3. In a blink of eyes, the donuts are taken out from the chiller and they will stay at the room temperature for 5 minutes before they were deep fried in sunflower oil.

4. The final step would be glacing and filling. When the donuts have cooled, dip each top surface into the glaze and then flip over and cool on a tray. Most filling work are done by machine but softer filling such as vanilla and tiramisu are done manually.

5. J.Co is very stringent on their Quality Control where every donuts dough must weight the same and any glacing or topping work gone haywire will be thrown away.

J.Co’s coffee is a blend of 5 origins: Brazil, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Bolivia, and Indonesia. All were roasted, packed and aired to its respective store together to give you the distinctive flavour of the combination.

From Left: Mochabella, Toffee O, Ice Chocolate (Best Seller)

Glazzy is one of the most famous donut in J.CO. It is glazed with American honey while it is still hot. The honey glaze will lovingly fill your mouth with a wonderful melting sensation.

Al Capone was a notorious gangster thug and ruthless thief who ruled a criminal empire. He was the most sought after man back then, the Belgium chocolate meet Californian crunchy almond donut was name as such because it is the ‘Most Wanted’ donut at J.Co.

Coco Loco with dark chocolate inside and out. Do not attempt to bite this on your first date, as the yummylicious bitter sweet dark chocolate filling will spill over.

P1160820

Why nut is another variation with American peanut butter filling and white chocolate toppings. It could be a staple food because the peanut butter is so rich and satisfying.

P1160853

Cheese me up, with New Zealand cheese on top and teeny weeny bits of chives won the guys’ vote. Savoury donut is really something for a change.

Miss Green T – The Japanese Matcha is tremendously intense sweetness and has a very deep flavour. One of my favourite flavour!

Verdict: These colourful and evil little rings are sweet and tasty, especially with the freeze (ice blended). The donut it self is cotton soft, cushy and fluffy. The glazing and toppings are sweeter as compared to the Big Apple’s, which someone with sweet tooth like me would love it. My top pick would be Alcapone, Miss Green T and Coco Loco while the Glazzy is a tad too sweet for my liking.

One will be in great dilemma because there are so many varieties of donut to select a favorite from. Miss Intan told us that you an actually tell the roving donut boys that you would wana have Top 3, Top 6, Top 12 or even Top 24 where they will drop the best selling flavours into your box.

Just Heavenly Pleasures Launch

We were glad that Nigel has invited all the floggers to Just Heavenly Pleasures Launch. We (thought) we were the first to arrived but Joe and Nicole is already seated at Chef and Brew with their cuppas. When the clock strikes three, we spotted more and more familiar faces – WMW, Jason, Jackson, FatBoyCakes, Boolicious, Lyrical Lemongrass, SooYin, etc.
Nigel and Allan, the baker, the wedding planner, the singer were busy preparing and entertaining their guests. Their crews too, did a very good job. Of course, everyone got to sampled these petite and delicate goodies from Just Heavenly Pleasures. I like the fact that their desserts is very dense and flavourful but not too sweet. I would usually avoid brownies, the ubersweetness of its sugary content is too much for me but I’m in love with JHP brownies!
These are some of the selection of goodies served that day.
Chocolate Cheese Cake

Profiteroles

Banana Cream Pie

Eclairs

Key Lime Tart

Tier cake with simple and classy ornaments on display, it is beautiful piece of art.

SugarWorks creation by one of the crew in Just Heavenly Pleasures
Eat with your eyes first. I’m so tempted to buy everything back but towards the end of the day, the cakes were almost sold out. I managed to get the sticky butterscotch, yippie!

A zebra can never change its strips. Floggers or food paparazzi , as usual, have to flash out their camera on FOOD. Other than desserts, these goodies below are offered for sales too. Nicely wrapped in fabric gift bags, it makes a good gift for occassions.

I met Swee San, someone who I stalked her blog since ages ago. It was a coincident that she used to blogged in a blog named Just Heavenly with her friends last time, and now she is a new addition to the production crews of Just Heavenly.
Jackson and Kampungboy

Jason and Kampungboy
Nigel was telling us that he was having stage fright but the next moment he stood up there, he gave a very heartwarming speech to us, the audience.

Highlight of the day, the Wicked Pitches, a local a cappella group on stage. We are truly impressed by their beautiful renditions.

It was great meeting with the floggers. I never ceased to be amazed by the giggles and laugher of fellow bloggers. A friend of mine told me that food bloggers are a cheerful bunch of people, it is true indeed. Rendezvous with friends or people who enjoy good food adds untold pleasures to our life. Not to forget, all the best to Nigel and Allan too!

Treats from Starbucks

These cake is a treat from our new friends from Korea. There are 12 slices all together! Can we be not gaining weight? You can get a glimpse of their sweet faces in my coming posts. Be patient for that! So which is your favourite?

Expresso Tiramisu – Combination of ladies fingers, cream cheese and Starbuck’s expresso

Blueberry Cheesecake – Crunched Almonds as the base with layers of sponge cake, cream cheese and blueberries

Chocolate Dreams – It’s so chocolaty that it melts your heart

Coffee Cheesecake paired with Strawberry Cream Cheese Square

Black Forest – Fresh cream, chocolate chips, chocolate sponge cake and cheeries in one bite

Marble Cheesecake – Cream cheese with nice swirls of melted chocolate

These boxes is occupying our fridge but we truly love them because it’s a little treat from our friend. Frankly speaking, I would rather go for Bakerzin’s cake than Starbuck’s as they both cost a bomb but Bakerzin’s cakes are of better quality.
