FAQs and suggestions will be posted below:

FAQs

1) Hi KampungboyCitygal, can you please send me a copy for your HK/Taiwan/Bali/Bangkok itineraries?

All our itineraries are being shared in blog post forms.

Bali – http://kampungboycitygal.com/2011/10/6d5n-bangkok-hua-hin-purely-rr-food-shopping/
Bangkok – http://kampungboycitygal.com/2011/10/6d5n-bangkok-hua-hin-purely-rr-food-shopping/
HK v1 – http://kampungboycitygal.com/2009/05/round-up-6d5n-at-hong-kong-macau/
HK x2 – http://kampungboycitygal.com/2010/12/eat-drink-hong-kong-2010-trip-report/
Taiwan – http://kampungboycitygal.com/2009/07/executive-summary6d6n-taipei-yilan-taiwan/

Information were being shared without any reservation. It’s even better than our own itineraries in excel/word form!

2) Do you earn 7 figures each year to afford such a lavish lifestyle?

No, we do not live a lavish lifestyle. We can only afford 2 – 3 holidays per annum and we usually spend less than RM 4,000 per person for one of those trips. Contrary to popular beliefs, we do not eat out every day for every single meals. Eat outs usually happens in the weekends, which we really enjoy doing so. We also conduct invited reviews on a very selective basis; with of course a full disclosure (we categorise them under “invited reviews” or we open the line with something like “thanks for the invitation…”.). Rest assured that invited reviews will never swayed our honest opinions. We also opted to not to write if the food is just plain bad.

3) What is your policy on invited reviews? (from PRs or restaurateurs)

Seventh Anniversary Dinner at Rama V Fine Thai Dining Restaurant, Jalan U Thant

anni-1
This is a much-belated review of our dinner at the Rama V on our seventh anniversary a couple weeks ago.
IMG_5652
Thanks to KampungBoy who made it home in time. There’s almost nothing in the world as sweet and romantic as my boyfriend.
anni
We chose to dine at Rama V, as we are looking for a taste of something different. Quietly tucked away from the busy district of Kuala Lumpur, Rama V offers traditional Thai cuisine in a fine dining atmosphere.

The interior is decorated with an effort towards elegance. There is some subtle Thai cultural iconography that endorses the room as well.
IMG_5822
We were seated by the glass panel, overlooking the water pond which was nice for a date night.
IMG_5812

IMG_5806

IMG_5679
As far as the food goes, it was what you would expect from your average Thai establishment: various stir-fried options, soups, grilled items, etc.
IMG_5705
Thai Ice Tea (RM 12). My choice of drink was horrible; overly sweet with only a mild hint of tea flavour.
IMG_5739
Chor Ladda (RM 28) – Flower Shaped Dumplings Stuffed with Minced Chicken and Peanut

The blue colored flower shaped dumplings were beautifully presented. I loved the sweet-savory taste of the minced chicken and peanut filling but the skin was too thick and chewy for my liking.
IMG_5750
Tom Yam Kung Mae Nam (RM 25) – Tom Yam River Prawn served in Young Coconut

The hot and spicy tom yam soup was brimming with seafood but the ingredients were not fresh as it should be.
IMG_5755
Our order of Roast Duck Curry (RM 28) with Lychee turned out pretty good. The spiciness of the red curry, the sweetness of the lychees and the saltiness of the duck, combine to make a delicious simmering dish.
IMG_5741
Thai Steamed Fish with Lime Juice (RM 65). It was served over a portable furnace of smoking embers in a fish shaped metal dish.
IMG_5777
This enables the sauce to bubble away and stay warm while we eat it. We really enjoyed the spicy, sour and tangy flavours of the soup based sauce and the fresh, succulent fish.
IMG_5760
Our total damage was RM 180++, can’t complain given that it is a Thai fine dining restaurant. Though there is some hits and misses on the food, the low lighting and lovely decor make this a place to remember.

Last but not least, I just want to take this chance to tell KampungBoy how much he means to me. Happy anniversary my love! I’m glad I found you.

kampungboycitygal.com is 4 years old!

4 is an inauspicious number for the Chinese but 2009 has been a good year for us. Other than the non-stop binging with close friends like Christine, Chris and Aiwei; we did travel a bit. We went to:

  • Bangkok (company trip for kampungboy, family trip for citygal) in October 09 and December 09
  • Hong Kong in April 09
  • Kota Kinabalu in April 09
  • Singapore in October 09 and December 09
  • Taiwan in June 09 and August 09

Happy 5th Anniversary @ Kura Japanese Restaurant, One World Hotel

Copy of 5th anniversary1

When I first met you five years ago,I could not stand this arrogant man that stood before me and you dislike me for my intimidating stares.

For some strange reason, chemistry sparks between us and I knew you were the one and only one for me.

Thanks for changing my life for the better, thanks for tolerating my tantrums and my emotional moments, and many thanks for the years of happiness and joy that you have brought to me. To be able to spend the rest of my life with you gives me something to look forward to day after day.

Happy 5th Anniversary to Us!
Copy of 5th anniversary

On this special occasion, we went to Kura Japanese Restaurant at One World Hotel for a simple meal. Look at our previous anniversary dinner here (2nd, 3rd, 4th)

The interior is elegant but not overdone, making the restaurant stylish but providing a vague hint of coziness at the same time.

KampungboyCitygal is Two Years Old

On the 30th of December 2005, tiny slices of Keropok Lekor has ignited our intention to star a food blog and this is why KampungboyCitygal was borned. It is a typical real life example of how little things can make a big difference.

Food Blogging has gave us a lot of surprises and changed our perception towards food. We used to think that food is just some lifeless combination of carbo, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals that releases energy through the process of digestion. Well, something like that lar, I read it somewhere.

All in all, we were grateful that we have manage to go this far (2 years / 24 months/ 730 days) because I have not always been a persistent person. From today onwards, we’ll be here (http://kampungboycitygal.com). So update your link people!!

Happy Anniversary – Simple Dinner & Lavish Buffet @ Rakuzen

26082007361

That special day is here again, 26 August. On our anniversary I’d like to remind you how very special you are to me. You will never know how it thrills my heart every time I see you.

Over the pass three years, we’ve had our troubles and woes, but our love for each other had no attached strings. I am so very grateful for your unconditional love and support in a world full of conditions. I would like to dedicate ‘Everything’ by Michael Buble to you as the chorus matches the rhythm inside my heart so much.

And in this crazy life, and through these crazy times
It’s you, it’s you, You make me sing.
You’re every line, you’re every word, you’re everything.

You’re a carousel, you’re a wishing well,
And you light me up, when you ring my bell.
You’re a mystery, you’re from outer space,
You’re every minute of my everyday.

And I can’t believe, uh that I’m your man,
And I get to kiss you baby just because I can.
Whatever comes our way, ah we’ll see it through,
And you know that’s what our love can do.

Happy anniversary. Looking forward to many more years with you!

I thought that we won’t be having any celebration this year as Kampungboy needs to work on both Saturday and Sunday. I made him a simple, hearty and filling dinner on Saturday night.

I was a lousy cook back then, my cooking skill is still pathetic till now but I guess when you love food, you should know what good food should taste and you pick things up along the way. Fortunately I have that cooking card up my sleeve for when I decide to come out with something decent. Black pepper pork blade steak with a side of mashed potato, fresh poached broccoli and angel hair pasta with fresh tomato sauce was served in a jiffy once he came back. Kampungboy has always appreciated my cooking, especially the love infused dinner on our anniversary eve. LOL

P1130619

It comes to my surprise that he doesn’t have to work on Sunday and I get to hung with him the whole day. Feel like stuffing ourselves up, we headed to Rakuzen at Chulan Square for a little taste of Japanese elegance. The exquisite taste of Japanese food often comes at a price but not for the buffet lunch priced at only RM 55++ per head.

P1130629

The minimalist design of the interior reflects a traditional Japanese architecture. The dining space and wooden interiors appeal to those with a penchant for coziness and intimacy. It has an open concept kitchen that allows the chef to take the limelight away with all the slicing, tossing and flipping actions going on.

As starter, we order the spider maki, the crispy rendition of soft shell crab in the Spider Maki complement the rice and seaweed very well.

The miniature and reddish brown coloured octopus (chuka lidako) took some courage to eat but I found it quite delicious and not at all chewy. The thinly sliced seasoned scallop (chuka kurage) is crunchy and I love the welcoming hint of spiciness.

Our choice of taro sashimi is impeccably fresh and properly presented. The silky, custardy piping hot tofu squares in a clear soy sauce based sauce is absolutely delicious. How could I missed out my favourite, the yummy and healthy snack – Boiled green soy bean (Edamame)?

However, our assorted tempura
was served lukewarm instead of pipping hot. We suspected that they made it in advance and piled them up because of the big dining crowd. It is soggy and greasy, a sign of old oil. The batter was not diaphanous but thick.

P1130665P1130658P1130661

The assorted skewered grill (kushiyaki moriawase) was disappointing, they over grill the chicken, as it result in a hard and tasteless meat. I love to have my grilled chicken (yakitori) with some tare sauce (mixture of mirin, sweet sake and soy sauce) but it is not served in Rakuzen. The smelt (Shishamo) with huge egg sacs inside is utterly tasteless too. The grilled Shiitake Mushrooms is a total rip off too, dry and tasteless.

P1130730

The unagi combines a rich flavor with an appetizing texture, crisp on the outside but tender on the inside. The flavour is too rich in fact, they must have splurge on the kabayaki sauce.

P1130793

With a limited dessert selection, we settled for scoops of aromatic and macha ice cream and fruit platter.

P1130796

P1130800

The service was slow; we were informed by the serving staff that it takes longer time for the food to reach you after the first order was taken. Is it some kind of policy? Ambiance wise, Rakuzen has one of the most pleasant settings. The starter selection, sashimi selection and sushi selection was good but the same does not go to the skewered grilled item and tempura item. The quality of all you can eat buffet is not as good as ala carte. They adopt a more personal approach through their ala carte menu but it usually costs you a bomb. It actually varies across individuals, value for money or quality in food?

KampungboyCitygal is One Year Old!

Happy First Birthday to KampungboyCitygal

Exactly one year ago, our very first post on Kuala Terengganu steamed keropok lekor was borned……

Till now, the passion of blogging is still growing strong. I know that I might not have the best writing skills, or the most professional shot, but I believe that our passion shines through our posts and pictures.

The past one year was a truly gastronimical journey that cannot be verbally described. We picked up on new eateries around or new terms on food (julianne? al-fresco? al-dente? mumbo jumbo names of cheese? aphrodasiac oyster?) from other bloggers. It made us a little gurus among our friends for dining/cooking guide.

Thanks to you, foodies and readers who keep us going all the time. We promised to do our best in searching high (for gourmet treat) and low (for alley specialties) just to feast your eyes. We ha d updated the side bars, hope that it works as a little dining guide or recipe search for you guys :)

Happy New Year and hope that you guys can enjoy yourselves tremendously tonight.
