Hidden amongst the rows of printing shops along Jalan Brunei and the electronics mecca along Jalan Pasar is Cafe 5, a quaint little cafe that specialises in Belgium Liege style Waffles.
The cafe’s facade is easily recognisable – green plants with white brick wall, and the owner’s lucky number “5”.
The cafe is also located adjacent to Urban Bird Boutique Hotel’s lobby.
So what is so unique about Liege Waffles?
Traditional Liege waffles have been enjoyed in Belgium for centuries. Liege waffles are baked from a dough rather than a batter to give you a seriously delicious, full-flavored waffle experience. Cafe 5’s version of dough went through 20 hours of natural fermentation process, resulting in a brioche like texture on the interior while the exterior remained crispy and crusty. These Belgian waffles are a little different than your run-of-the-mill waffle because Belgian pearl sugar is the secret and the star of Liege Waffles. The sugar pearls are studded throughout the waffle and give every bite a crunchy, caramelized sensation.
We tried their signature mango milk share (RM 15) and Gula Melaka Iced Latte (RM 12) and loved both drinks to bits!
Murakami Waffles (RM 18)
The waffles were golden and crispy on the surface, with a chewy yet tender crumb within, just like brioche. The pearl sugar softens under the heat of the iron and creates areas that are crispy and sweet throughout the waffles. So good!
The “brûlée” takoyaki dressing, japanese mayo, japanese spices and bonito flakes gave a really nice umami taste. Highly recommended.
Pure Indulgence (RM 18)
Waffles with Belgian chocolate, strawberries, bananas and Salted Egg Yolk & Curry Leaf Ice Cream. The salted egg yolk ice cream is love! This unique flavor is really delicious,with chunks of salted egg and curry leaves inside.
PB Bunk (RM 15)
A classic waffle for those who love chocolate, peanut butter and banana.
We are no big fans of waffles but we will make exception for Liege Waffles at Cafe 5. Liege waffles are possibly one of the most delicious little treats you could have for breakfast, brunch and tea break! We will definitely return for their home made waffles.
