Brunch is our favourite meal of the day. A few quiet hours of special bonding time, savored along with dishes and drinks so lovingly prepared – what’s not to love? What about a bit of French flair? For the past several years, ‘le brunch’ has been très chic in Paris, and even in Malaysia. 2OX, my favourite French bistro is taking us on an exciting culinary tour around France in 8 weeks. Last week’s theme was “Provence”, we were here on a “Burgundy” week, and this week they will be featuring “Brittany”.

I can never say no to a bubbly start to the day.
We started our brunch with a delightful platter of gougere, taste a l’epoisse and ouef meurette.
The easiest way to describe gougers is pâte à choux mixed with cheese.In Burgundy, gougères are often served with the local aperitif, kir. How cute are these and such a gorgeous color too! I love the soft, delicate texture and subtle cheese accent that screams for a glass of goods wine.
Oeufs en meurette are a traditional dish from Burgundian cuisine based on poached eggs and meurette sauce or red wine sauce. Sauce meurette is one of the grand classics of French country cooking, it was so rich and flavourful and went really well with the perfectly poached egg.
This over-the-top tart is a terrific mix of pungent Époisses cheese. The cheese centre was lusciously gooey and creamy. Though it has a pungent aroma, the interior was quite mild in taste. My favourite starter amongst all!
For mains, we had a Burgundian fish stew. The fish is poached in aligoté (white wine from Burgundy) and served with a cream sauce, resulting in a tender, flaky moist fish with such a delicate flavor and texture. The cream sauce was well-balanced too.
The boeuf bourguignon was excellent. Such a hearty dish with the most tender meat and a rich savoury gravy! Kampungboy kept stealing from my portion too!
I can never say no to poached pear in red wine sauce, and 2OX’s version just topped every other versions that I’ve tried before. The poached pear, crimson with wine and fragrant with spice, makes a decadent but strikingly simple dessert. I love the vanilla ice cream with REAL vanilla bean too, such a perfect complement to the poached pear.
