Private Room is KL’s first wine speakeasy – founded by a team of bankers, entrepreneurs & sommeliers . We were here on a Saturday night. There isn’t any signboards, so we had fun hunting for this secret yellow door on the ground floor.
A door access password will be given to you when you make your reservation. For walk-ins, you can still ring the doorbell and someone will be there to greet you.
Upon entrance, we were greeted by shelves of wine bottles. Private Room stored more than 200 labels in the main hall, and most of the bottles are priced under RM200, making it an affordable hangout spot for the wine lovers. Whiskies, vodka, gin, brandy, rum, tequila & other liquors are also available.
Private Room’s two award-winning sommeliers Justin Ho & Danny Tai were very helpful and knowledgable in recommending us some wines to start.
For example, if you are curious of how the most famous wine label in the world, Chateau Lafite-Rothschild taste like but could not afford one, why not try the Legende Bordeaux Rouge? The Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine the classic elegance of the Lafite style, while the ageing gives it charm and a well-rounded character.
We enjoyed sitting at the bar watching the sommelier/bartender work. Such a pleasure!
There are also two private rooms available for big groups.
We were quite eager to try out Private Room’s signature wine-based cocktails. Justin and Danny have crafted a collection of complex and delicious wine-based cocktails that put sangria to shame.
I like the fact that these cocktails aren’t sweet at all. Instead, they’re refreshing, sometimes lightly bitter or spicy, but potent enough to make your face goes blush. We started off with a Fincheetini – Fino sherry, vodka, lychee, olive. It is an interesting twist to my favourite lycheetini, I love the the beautiful perfume and delicious taste of lychee and Fino sherry.
Another interesting twist to Old Fashioned, New fashioned added in Tawny Port to the usual ingredients such as bourbon, lemon and angostura bitter.
Never too Late. I love the complex flavour – spicy, tangy and sweet impart by Lemongrass, Lime, Lemon, Dessert Wine, Campari, Mint Leaves & Strawberry Liqueur.
Little Bubbles is an interesting combination of X-Rated fusion liquor, Apple Syrup, Cava, Lemon Juice, Apricot Brandy & Mint Leaves. I love the sweet aroma of this cocktail. It was not overbearing, making it a seductively appealing drinks.
How could we do without some bar snacks such as Iberoco Pork Skewer, siew yoke and fried chicken. Bar snacks cost between RM10 & RM35, while mains start at RM22.
Private Room is the perfect hideout bar for wines and cocktails after dinner. We often feel intimated whenever we HAVE to talk to a sommelier, feeling anxious that they will recommend us a very expensive label. However, the ever-changing wine list in Private Room TTDI presents affordable and accessible value wines from around the globe with a focus on the marriage of food and drink. There’s even a 20% discount on take out wines. We also learnt so much about wines from Justin & Danny that night, thank you so much guys.
