Gong Xi Fa Cai! Chinese New Year is just around the corner! For us, this festive season is commemorated by several important activities: eating and shopping!
We almost lost count of the number of CNY dinner gatherings we had with friends and families this month. CNY is a great excuse to feast! One of our most recent CNY dinners in IPPUDO, The Gardens Mall is very memorable.
Hailing from the ramen capital, Hakata (Fukuoka) in Kyushu, Japan, IPPUDO has a strong international foothold as seen in Singapore, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney, Hong Kong, Taipei, New York and etc. Well, we all know that Ippudo is famous for their Hakata style ramen but this year, they have something special in store…
Many of the traditional CNY food signify good luck and fortune, e.g. Yee Sang means an increase in abundance.
I like how IPPUDO Malaysia uses fresh shredded vegetables and fresh salmon for the Fortune Yee Sang. Apart from the usual suspects such as cucumber, radish and carrot; there are also pumpkin, beetroot, Japanese seaweed and pickled garlic.
Deep fried ramen and tempura battered bits are included to enhance the Yee Sang’s crunchiness. So creative! This is also what makes the Fortune Yee Sang distinctive from the other Yee Sang we tried. Instead of your usual plum sauce, IPPUDO uses home made honey lemon sauce that is sweet, sour and light at the same time.
3 simples steps to enjoy the Fortune Yee Sang:
1) Assemble the fresh salmon slices on top of the vegetables.
2) Pour the honey lemon sauce into the Yee Sang. Remember to pour everything as the amount of sauce given is just nice for the portion – not too much and not too little.
3) Toss the colourful Yee Sang higher and wish out loud for good fortune and health at the same time to usher in prosperity and abundance for the year of GOAT.
Huat Ah! KampungBoy looked so happy, must be shouting for bonus and increment!
For me, Yee Sang wasn’t high on the list of festive food as I am not fond of the vinegary aftertaste as well as the artificial colouring found in most pickled items. However, Ippudo’s Fortune Yee Sang won me over! It was so refreshing, just like a summer salad. The sauce was also slightly tangy and not too sweet, making me wanting to have more. The four of us really “sapu” the whole Yee Sang plate clean!
We also ordered some items from the Chef’s Winter Special menu:
Buta Kimchi Teppan (RM 16) – juicy pork belly slices served with spicy kimchi sauce, cabbages, bean sprouts, spring onion on hot place.
Pork Ginger Teppan (RM 18) – juicy pork belly slices served with vegetables and ginger paste on hot plate.
Spider Roll (RM 18) – deep fried soft shell crab rolled up with sushi rice, seaweed, cucumber, lettuces, tempura flakes and fish roe served with spicy mayyonaise and teriyaki sauce.
Karaka Kakuni (RM 31)
We also ordered IPPUDO’s Karaka ramen with their signature braised pork cubes. The waitstaff asked how do we like our noodles to be -soft, regular or hard. We elected for regular, as it is probably the safest bet if you want something al dente but not too chewy. With special spicy miso paste and ground pork, the broth was really flavourful!
Spicy Black (RM 26)
The spicy black is prepared using a special spicy nikumiso paste, specially prepared using black pepper, shansho and other spices. Spicy Black is also uniquely enhanced with IPPUDO’s new spicy fragrant oil, a blend of their original & spicy koyu. The combination has added some layers of complexity to the broth as well.
Remember to usher in the year of GOAT with a lou hei session in IPPUDO Malaysia and get an exclusive IPPUDO ang pow packet with every Yee Sang order or every RM100 spent in a single receipt.

The timing is perfect because we just got the keys to our new place. We need to buy so many electrical appliances so there’s no harm buying earlier right?
I also thought of buying this Panasonic Mixer for my mum. She is using a hand mixer for her CNY cookies baking. Having a stand mixer can alleviate all the arm work (so tiring) so this could help her a lot. It’s on 55% discount!
Our current fridge could not cope with all our CNY food shopping too! It’s time to get a big, big fridge. KampungBoy, right hor? It’s on sale too!
And finally, a 40 inch TV for my mother in law because she is an avid HK drama fan. She loves anything with big screen so that she can see better and clearer. RM 300 off, should I?
