Cheap Korean Food @ Ko Hyang, The Gardens

Ko Hyang (故乡)= my homeland

1

There’s a reason it is always packed – good food with reasonable price (from RM9.90 to RM 18.90). With free banchan and soup too!

Ko Hyang is no stranger to the foodies in KL. Owned by a Korean who used to study here, this kiosk like eating place serves home made korean food. The one page menu features simple korean favourites such as bibimbap, jap chae (stir fry glass noodles), jeons (pancakes) and some rice/noodles dishes.

4

I was there last weekend with the girls (Christine and Aiwei) and we ordered up a feast that can easily feed 4 to 5 people.

Char Siu Wantan Mee @ SFS Kopitiam, Aman Suria

IMG_0352

I have a confession to make – I’m not a morning person. Being able to sleep till noon is a comforting reminder that I occasionally get time off work and I really appreciate that. So whenever KampungBoy tries to wake me up for breakfast, I would protest, “Sunday’s the only morning I can sleep. Can’t we eat later?” and turn my back against him. But there’s always an exception, there is one favourite breakfast place that I’m willing to wake up early for – SFS (aka 747) Kopitiam.

IMG_0351

And in SFS Kopitiam, I found the love of my life - beautifully caramelized char siu that literally melt in your mouth. Another perennial favourite is Famous Seremban Favourites.

IMG_0310

Other than char siu, the vietnamese style curry noodles is something not to be missed too.

IMG_0349

However, the wait is excruciating here. Be prepared to wait for at least half an hour or more as everyone else seated inside the coffee shop will be waiting for the same plate of porcine goodness! I noticed that the man who is manning the stall keeps thrusting tray after tray of char sius into the oven for reheat. The secret behind the awesome char sius?

IMG_0335

The waiting finally paid off when our curry noodles (RM4) came in its full glory cockles. The ingredients given were pretty generous; we had cockles, taufu-pok, long beans and char siew. Thumbs up for the curry broth, it was thick and rich, with a mild peppery heat and intensely flavorful spices.

IMG_0346

Fatter strands of wantan noodles were used for the curry broth, we were told.

IMG_0333

We also had the dry version, tossed well in a light brown sauce. The piece de resistance is the char siu; caramelised blackish layer with slightly charred bits and tender layers of fat and meat. We asked for half fat half lean and regretted as it was too greasy for our liking. We’ll stick to lean + siu siu fat next time. :)

Miao Kou Night Markat 庙口夜市 @ Keelung, Taiwan

For our travelogue, please click here. I’ve completed the itinerary from our June 2009 trip, and now I’m going to do some add ons (from our August 2009 trip) for your easy reference, just like the example below:

Day 4

Note: I have included some places of interest from my latest Taiwan Trip into the itinerary with a “+” sign. Pingxi, Jiufen, Jinguashi, Keelung are townships that lie adjacent to each other. It is best to spend 2D1N to cover places of interest like Pingxi + Jiufen + Jinguashi + Keelung Night Market (spend a night in Jiufen). Mode of transportation includes inter-township buses, taxis or chartered car. It is best to charter a car (check with the B&B owner) to avoid complications and to save time, and the view along the way from Jiufen to Jinguashi (Dong Bei Jiao 東北角海岸) is spectacular!

If you are looking for a free Taiwan trip planner/trip advisor, remember to click here ya!

IMG_4161

Keelung’s Miaokou Night Market is famous throughout Taiwan for its large selection of food.  The night market is easily accessible on foot for most travelers arriving from other cities. From the Keelung railway station walk east straight along the street following the harbor in the direction of the Keelung Harbor Bureau (identifiable at night by its large orange neon sign. The night market is roughly one block from the point where you cross a freeway overpass. (information from wikitravel)

We would highly recommend Miaokou Night Market if you plan to pay a visit to Jiufen/Jinguashi. Keelung is only 20 minutes away if you take a bus. We took a bus from Jiufen to the night market but please remember that the last bus will depart from Keelung at 9.50 pm. If you are late, hail a cab or take a bus back to Rueifang Train Station and from there, take a cab to Jiufen.

Screen shot 2009-11-18 at 7.15.12 PM.png

Situated near the sea, the night market is especially rich in seafood. Comparing to other might markets in Taiwan, the Keelung Miaokou Night Market is relatively small but the delicacies such as Potside Sticker Soup, Butter Crab, Shaved Ice, etc made up for it.

Nippon Paint Workshop – All About Colours!

IMG_7819

Meet Iza, the pretty mummy and Miu from Plus Size Kitten. I love reading about all her lil’ misadventures at those warehouse sales where we girls go ohh and ahh. Guys can never understand the thrill of fighting with thousands of other desperate woman and the triumphant moment of securing a discounted item that everyone else is eyeing.

OK. enough of that already.

Few weeks back, I attended a workshop organized by Nippon Paint together with some other  bloggers. Little did I know that it’s going to be a such a fun and insightful event. We  got our hands on doing some swirls and patterns with Nippon Paint. Let’s just say that we are better off blogging, except for the few talented ones. :p

Restaurant Hong Kong Dessert aka Tim Pan Gor Gor @ SS2

IMG_9741

Tim Pan Kor Kor, a new addition to the already happening row of shop lot in SS2 besides KTZ (reviews here & here), Sanbanto & A Little Dim Sum Place.  We were there with the sweet duo, Christine and Chris on a relatively quiet weekday night but the place was crowded. A good sign that the food must be good? Apparently not.
IMG_9764

We tried their signature Mango Hor Fun on our previous visit to their Kepong outlet, so we settled for Mango Cheong Fun (RM 8) instead. Enticing? The “fun” is actually some coconut flavored jelly that gave a nice and bouncy bite, a nice contrast to the juicy and meltingly soft flesh of those mango cubes.

Ipoh Food Excursion II – 9 Stops in 1 Day

Continued from Day 1
IMG_6666

We made 9 pit stops on the second day of our Ipoh Food Excursion. Here’s a picture of us before the excess weight and love handles came into picture.

#1 Foh San Dim Sum

IMG_6615

The spanking new and clean Foh San Dim Sum which can easily fit few hundreds patrons at one go were fully occupied by the time we got there. Not surprising at all, as according to my parents, the place is perpetually packed even on a weekday.

Tripod King 鼎王麻辣锅 @ Guangfu North Road, Taipei

For our full trip itinerary, please click here.
P1330156

On the last night of our trip, KampungBoy wanted to splurge on dinner. Apparently, he had “too much” of Taiwanese Dollar left because he spent very little on food, accommodation, transport, etc (credits to my good planning). Being a good girlfriend, I did my fair bit in helping him by……buying cosmetics and skin care products as seen in the picture above! If you love drug store brands, just walk into any Sasa/Watson’s/Cosmed outlets and you’ll go crazeeeeee over the beauty finds!
IMG_2669

Together with two huge shopping bags, we then walked for about 45 minutes to Tripod King, a very famous hot pot restaurant in Taipei other than Tai He Dian. You can opt to take a cab but since our “dinner” reservation was set at 11pm, we took our own sweet time to stroll along the streets of Taipei. Originally from Taichung, they have recently set up a branch in Taipei and is so popular that reservations have been pretty hard to get, which explains the “odd” slot that we got.

As a non smart phone user…

smart phone user 1,2,3

Quite a handful of people in my office are smart phone users, and they kept raving about about the FB app where they can keep their social life intact. Well, I nearly succumb to temptations until I found about about Channel X’s Facebook via SMS services.

It costs only RM 1 a week for unlimited usage! This translates into RM 4 a month and RM 52 a year! Great savings huh? Now I can tambah ayam goreng to my plain nasi lemak while my colleagues are stuck with their roti kosong. muahahahaha!!

Who says you need a smartphone to use Facebook on the go?
