Senjyu Sushi @ Cineleisure, Mutiara Damansara

senjyu sushi1

How was your Christmas? We hope that you had an enjoyable and memorable Christmas. Ours was pathetic though. KampungBoy was down with flu so we stayed home on the Christmas Eve and to make up for it, we went for simple Christmas lunch at Senjyu Sushi. We found the restaurant (surprisingly) empty on a public holiday –this made us hesitate at first, since this is usually a bad sign. However, we stuck it out and I’m glad we did.

Senjyu Sushi, which is related to Sakae Sushi from Singapore, has nothing much in common.  Senjyu Sushi is an upmarket sushi place, with nice sleek décor, gorgeous pieces of copper cranes and a dark ambiance while Sakes Sushi is fun, casual and comes with a reasonable price tag.

We were served with freshly grated wasabi first. It has a sharp and clean, unlike the usual wasabi paste that we have in other sushi joints. Other than ordering from the menu, one can pick plates after plates of sushi from the conveyor belt. DO note that nothing is cheap here; it ranges from RM 4 for simple cucumber maki to RM 16 for luxurious item such as wagyu beef sushi.

  Inari Roll (RM 4 ++)

P1320090

Senjyu Sushi is running a lunch promotion with bento set ranges from RM 39.90 to RM 42.90. Sushi and Soba Set (RM 42.90 ++) was the obvious choice, since KampungBoy can only take “ching” food as such.

We were clearly amused by the sushi with longer piece of fish. We can easily wrap it around the rice and eat it. How convenient!

P1320092

The tempuras were a huge let down. Although they were all freshly made (as we can see from the open kitchen), but the batter was hard, lumpy and greasy.

The Foie gras and oyster mentai maki (RM 24.90 ++) belongs to me since someone was too ill to indulge in such rich food. Imagine thin crispy outer layer and  the burst of hot liquid liver of bite size lightly seared foie gras. It was an instant bliss.

P1320109

No complains for the oyster maki as well. It was topped with some sweet, plump and juicy oyster with some sweet pink colored mayo lathered between.

Dessert – Coffee Jelly with Coffee Syrup

Citygal @ Senjyu Sushi & KampungBoy @ ermmm Wendy’s (recovered and eating Wendy’s fries like there’s no tomorrow)

Total damange? RM 87 for two. It is definitely not a place that we can afford to dine in anytime. Service is extremely attentive, almost over attentive at times. We felt like most of the staffs were glaring at us throughout our meal. Other than this, we reckoned that the food is slightly more expensive than other sushi places in town but you get what you pay for.

Winter Solstice Family Dinner

P1320021

Growing up in a traditional Chinese family, winter solstice is a rather big festival attached with great importance. My mum has always been telling us that we’ll be one year older after finishing bowls of brightly coloured tang yuan, which symbolizes reunion. For me, it is supposed to be a time of gathering with families and friends for a heart warming dinner as such:

132_PANA

(From L to R)

Steamed White Chicken. Stir Fried Assorted Vegetables. Braised Mushroom & Chicken Feet. Pan Fried Prawns. Siu Yoke & Char Siu. Sea Cucumber Soup with Cabbage, Fish Balls & Pork Balls.

There’s nothing as blissful as looking around the table and seeing faces you love and serving them good food.

Happy Winter Solstice everyone!

Formosa Taiwanese Restaurant @ Sunway Pyramid

P1270434

Here’s a short post to end the week. Happy holiday everyone!
Have you ever been to Asian Avenue @ Sunway Pyramid? Other than the blasting music and pops of colourful fashion statement that spells “YOUNG”, it is a food paradise, a snack paradise to be precise.

P1270437

P1270449P1270444

Local snacks? Korean snacks? Yokomon ice cream? We settled into this little stall known as Formosa instead. We had a Taiwanese Fried Chicken Set that comes with a separate serving of lu rou fan (braised pork with rice) and zhen zhu nai cha (bubble milk tea). The lu rou fan was quite a pleasure to the palate; imagine soft fluffy rice drizzled with greasy braised meat gravy. The simplest and tastiest dish ever! However, the Taiwanese fried chicken was a HUGE disappointment, even Uncle Bob’s fares better. Boney, tough and dry, we left it untouched after a few bites.

P1270440

Our order of Da Chang Bao Xiao Chang (Taiwanese Sausage with Glutinous Rice) is delicious! Sweet chewy Taiwanese sausage and slightly salty glutinous rice were such perfect match.

Total damage? RM 12 if I recall it correctly. With some hits and misses, I wouldn’t mind a revisit considering the reasonable pricing, especially at “time like this”.  Oh maybe no? THE Government is confident that Malaysia will not slip into a “technical recession” anytime soon. What’s your take on this?

Waroeng Penyet @ The Curve, Mutiara Damansara

P1310557

Waroeng Penyet was opened by 4 Indonesians living in Singapore who strives to serve real traditional Javanese food to the locals and Indonesians who reside in the island. Since it has taken Singapore by storm, Waroeng Penyet has opened branches around Malaysia as well.

It was our first time here and was rather surprised to find that the place is packed in a good crowd. We even bumped into KY and Ringo Tan here!

P1310572

We started off with Gado Gado (RM 5.90) which is nothing to shout about. The peanut sauce is watery and bland while the vegetables are over boiled.

P1310575

 Chicken Wing Penyet (RM5.90)

P1310585

Our serving of ayam penyet (RM 7.90) comes in a huge drumstick, with a serving of tempe, tofu and dollops of their famous fiery chili sambal. I should have gone for the mild chili sambal, talking about being over ambitious!

We especially love the crunchy skin, tender chicken meat and the generous sprinkling of deep fried batter bits. Add on for only RM 1.90 if you wish to have a separate serving or rice or keropok.

We reckon that the ayam penyet is a must try item over here. It would be a good change from KFC fried chicken as well, considering that they charge about the same price.

Christmas All Day Special @ Pick n’ Brew, One Utama

P1310532

We were so glad that IT was over. The last week or so we have been cramming like crazy so to reward ourselves, we had a little dinner celebration at Pick n Brew. We were so lucky that busy buzzy Jackson was around the other day, so upon his recommendation, we opt for the Christmas All Day Special Set (RM 28++) that comes with a soup of the day, a main course and a drink.

P1310470

Eggnog Latte (RM 15). A festive drink in US and Canada, it is a perfect blend of sweet eggy caffeinated goodness with some mild hint of brandy.

P1310463

Christmas Carol & Minty Christmas

P1310455

Flavorful, rich and aromatic, the pumpkin soup was very comforting despite being a little runny.

P1310476

Grilled red mullet on stewed assorted beans
Drenched in delicious gravy, the fish fillet is no doubt, fresh and succulent. While being a big fan of beans in all form, I polished the plate clean.

P1310484

Oven baked stuffed chicken with soft mushroom polenta and sautéed vegetables.
A medley of fresh herbs infuses the stuffing for the roasted chicken breasts, resulting in a very flavorful dish. Polenta is course Italian corn meal and the subtle flavor of it goes very well with any gravy. I can’t help but to keep digging in!

P1310492

Pan fried breaded lamb on fondant potatoes and braised red cabbages
A delicious, tender and the lean cut of lamb with nutty crust is pan fried to perfection. Baked to a rich golden color, the fondant potato is rich and creamy while the sweet and sour red cabbage gave a very refreshing touch.

P1310496

Beef escalope and lobster tail with sautéed mushroom and grilled potato
A lean cut of beef escalope with caramelized onion topping make a winning combination in this fabulous, flavorsome main. The delectable lobster tail is sure to delight any seafood lover too.

P1310508

Sweet Ending – chocolate log cake, multi grain cookies with mocha pot coffee. Although feeling rather stuffed, I can’t stop munching on the light and chewy multi grain cookies!

P1310511

With reasonable pricing and attentive services, we thought that Pick n Brew is the place to go for a relaxing afternoon or casual get together. The Christmas all day set has given us a mood of festivity; which reminds me that I’m not done with my Christmas shopping. Ops!

Hing Loong Taiwanese Noodles @ Damansara Utama

P1300346

Sorry for the long hiatus. We were busy preparing for our papers, which is a lengthy and arduous process.

Let us get started on Hing Loong, a Taiwanese noodle shop at Damansara Uptown. It originates from Malacca and one of the partner’s mum happens to be a Taiwanese.

P1300354

Chilled Tofu with Chicken Floss (RM 4.90). The tofu has a slight sour taste and the gravy is too salty for our liking.

P1300367

Szechuan Spicy Beef Noodles (RM 6.00). Apart from chunks of beef, a generous serving of beef tendon and noodles are seen. However, there was a distinct lack of wow factor.

P1300361

We also tried out the signature dish – Shanghai Deep Fried Pork Chop Noodles (RM 5.50). I used to frequent their Malacca outlet for this. The noodles, made of soy bean, are smooth and chewy while the deep fried pork is flavorful and tender. An extra order of the deep fried pork (RM 3.50) was ordered to satisfy our cravings.

We reckon that only the signature Shanghainese Deep Fried Pork Chop Noodles is good and worth trying. With the reasonable pricing and attentive services, we wouldn’t mind dropping by for a quick fix.
