Boyfriend’s Survival Guide

1. Learn to Restrain Negative Emotion
Sometimes it is a wise move to crochet a doll in a moment of anger and wait until it subsides. Listen and choose not to react, it will prevent the broke out of an argument.

Friday night, heavy downpour with bumper to bumper traffic in all major roads.

BF (enthusiastically): What’s for dinner dear?
GF (shrugs): Anything will do.
BF: Let’s go for nasi lemak kukus and teh tarik!
GF: So crowded, its Friday night after all.
BF: What about Chinese dai chow?
GF: Dai chow? There’s only the two of us, can’t order much lar
BF (#$%^&P%^&*%^ at heart): Since you love Korean food, let’s go to
Korean Village then.
GF: So heaty! I need something ching and light, why don’t we go for Fatty Duck at Restoran Okay?
BF (@#$%^@#$%^&* at heart again, ching pulak wana eat fat duck): Sure, as long as dear loves it.

Ignorance is Bliss

Restaurant Okay, in front of Fatty Duck’s stall.

GF was fascinated by the various salty accompaniments to the porridge and rice – braised tofu, braised egg, braised mushroom, braised peanut, salted vegetables, braised duck intestine, and braised duck tongue. Her big wet eyes shine, pulling the BF’s sleeve and squeal like a little girl, “I want one whole duck to myself, then this, this, this, that, that, that and that, ok?”

BF nodded and asked her to take a seat (and best to shut your mouth). He’ll do the ordering. “Ignore what she said just now; give me only the egg, the tofu, some intestines and a duck drumstick”.

It is OK to Tell Little White Lies

The food arrived; the BF pulled his sleeve up onto his muscular arm, and ready to gobble down the food anytime when suddenly the same annoying voice is evolving around his ears, “Am I fat? Sometimes I think that I’m the epitome of fat, grease, lard and butter. I feel so round!”

(@#$%^&#$%, lemme eat in peace woman!)

“I like you the way you are. After all, round is a shape right? It requires a lot of time and effort to keep yourself in shape, I’m so proud of you dear!”

She smiles sheepishly, since, of course, she just want some assurance from him. And so, they chow down everything and lick the plate clean.

(You must always trust the Teochews for their braised dishes. The duck is simmered for over slow flame with various spices and concoctions. The other braised dishes bestowed their own distinctive textures and flavours as well.)

See? White lies are good for you. No wonder, our uncle in black tie always believe in white lies.

The waiter placed the bill between the two of them, so as not to imply that BF should foot the bill. In her irresistibly sexy voice, the GF smoothly slid the bill to BF side of the table and said, “Thank you for dinner.” The BF put down some cash rather willingly; it’s only a mere RM 10.30 after all.

Fit For a Raja – Passage Thru India @ Pearl International Hotel

welcome

indian containerP1230199
star anisP1230188

This branch of the much-loved Passage Thru India is located in Pearl International Hotel in a rather fine interior with dim lighting. Unlike its spacious head quarter that can seats over hundreds of patrons, this branch is a smaller version but is delightfully warm and inviting. It is carefully decorated with tasteful furnishings and antique ethnic accoutrement that the owner has collected from all over the world.

menu

Extensive Menu

Hearty, solid fare goes with the excellent ambiance as well. Passage thru India provides us with exotic and authentic Indian food from which we may with confidence select from a menu, which has been developed, by the award winning chefs who take a real pride in their cuisine.

papadom

Pappadums – Complementary

P1230231

Green Salad – Complementary

mango lassi and masala tea

Mango Lassi and Masala Chai

We started off with the complementary pappadams with yoghurt mint and green salad. The delicious crunch of these spiced lentils crisps paired with cooling yoghurt mint dipping have brightened up our meal. The green salad too, is refreshing alone or when served with a curry and rice. Not to forget our thirst quenchers, freshly blended mango lassi and masala chai, a brewed tea with aromatic spices.

tandoori

Tandoori Chicken – RM 16

I can swear that this is the best tandoori chicken that I’ve ever tasted – incredibly tender, juicy and well flavoured. It might be my jakun-ness, as I’ve only tried dried, charred tandoori chicken in some rip off mamaks. We found out from the manager that tandoori chicken is actually marinated with yoghurt and tandoori masala where the reddish color is coming from.

tikkacombo

Tikka and Kebab Platter
Lamb Kebab – RM 16 (Serves Two)
Fish Kebab – RM 17 (Serves Two)
Prawn Kebab – RM 16 (Serves Two)
Chicken Tikka – RM 19 (Serves Two)

The choices of kebabs and tikkas are exceptional, from tender lamb, hefty prawns, boneless chicken to juicy fish slices.

Greediness strikes in a sudden, wanting to try a little bit of everything, we requested for a tikka and kebab platter. My ultimate favorite is the lamb kebabs in a rather cute cigar shaped roll, it is incredibly juicy and spicy as warned by the spike red color while KampungBoy loves his succulent prawn kebab to every bit. Looking at the stunning grill marks of these tikkas and kebabs, it’s not hard to guess that they were being grilled in the tandoor as well. I just have the sudden urge to run into the kitchen and give the tandoor chef a big fat hug. Of course, I refrained myself from doing so.

P1230256

Bendhi Masala – RM 9

The ladies fingers are cooked to perfection in an exotic blend of onion, green chilies and tomato masala. The nuanced taste has us beckoning for more and it even inspire me to do something with that bag of lovely tender ladies fingers sitting in one corner of refrigerator for the past few weeks. Wish me luck!

naans

Assorted Naans
Plain Naan – RM4
Garlic Naan – RM6
Butter Naan – RM6
Masala Kulcha – RM7

The tasty pillow of flat bread is warm and scorched perfectly to make it soft and crispy at the same thing. The naans are all freshly made and cooked upon your order in the clay oven (tandoor). The variation of masala kulcha has won our heart over, with its stuffed mashed potatoes and vegetables which are really yummy.

curry fish head

Fish Head Curry – RM35

Our eyes widen in shock when the fish head curry arrived in our table. For RM35, the portion is enough to feed 6! We double confirmed with the serving staff before we actually tuck in lustily as we think that they must have mixed up our orders. Yes, for RM 35, it is well worth every penny! The humungous red snapper head is drenched in thick masala gravy with assorted vegetables such as okras, tomatoes and brinjals. Very often I was labeled as a weirdo because I think that the fish cheeks, fish eyes and fish lips are actually the best part of a fish head.

However, it’s neither a south Indian cuisine nor a north Indian influence dish, as curry fish head is uniquely Malaysian dish as it is not a norm for Indians to have fish head as a meal. It was intriguing to find out that this Malaysian dish is actually the best selling item in Passage thru India, where most people do take away for home parties or pot luck.

white rice
White Rice – RM 4

briyani
Briyani Rice – RM7

Rice goes well with fish head curry or fish head curry curry goes well with rice? Who cares anyway as we had a whole lotsa plate licking going on.

gulab jamun
Gulab Jamun – RM7

To end our meal, we were served with Gulab Jamun, some little fried milk (khoya) dough balls drenched in rose scented sugar syrup.

P1230280
Saffron Kulfi – RM7

It tastes more like a frozen dessert with bits of shaved ice here and there. Rather being soft like the usual tube ice cream, the kulfi is quite firm and popsicle-like. Yet it has its own charms, including a slightly chewy texture with crushed pistachio and a saffron scent.

As a long standing establishment in Malaysia, the food is up to our expectation very much. Price wise, it wasn’t as expensive as we have expected because everyone else has been referring to Passage thru India as “neh, that Indian fine dining place”. I would say that it was reasonable price, given the ambiance and quality. Now those of you who have never sampled the wares of this exotic and varied cuisine are indeed missing out a lot!

Loving Sushi Does Not Come Cheap

collage7

collage4

collage5

“Fancy fare like Japanese dine out does not come cheap!” Who says so? While excellent Japanese food can be had in a broad range of prices, blissful and cheap Japanese food takes the centre stage in Mid Valley Garden. After much back-pedaling and fast-talking, I convinced the bf to give both the places a try.

Excellent for a fast blast of Japanese food, Sushi Zen and Sushi Zanmai, with minimalist interior makes a popular venue for sit down and take away. Fair enough, a dinner in a nice setting restaurant will probably set you back a fair bit. Flipping through the menu, we know exactly what to order. Tenjuyu and Unagi Don (RM 15.90++ each), Ikura Handroll (RM 6), assorted sushi (ranging from RM 1.60 to RM 4.90) were all pretty decent.

Suffice to say that one of the things that is definitely convincing me that these two restaurants are far from being the expensive (meal for two costs around RM 30). If you opt to get a quick lunch/dinner, or sometimes a proper meal in places in Mid Valley Gardens without breaking the bank, Sushi Zen and Sushi Zanmai is highly recommended.

Pick n Brew @ One Utama

P1220724 copy

It’s always good to know a nice place for a relaxed drink, a bite to eat, or a good quality meal out. Pick N Brew is the place and so finally, we made our move to the swanking new Café at One Utama, Old Wing.Together with me was Christine, Chris, Aiwei, Aiwei’s brother, Wen Ching, Esiong, Sexy Beast and Sid. It’s always fun to meet up with this bunch of ravenous food bloggers, which means no impatient stares from non food bloggers while I’m happily snapping away, no complaints like Diet-Lar, Gam-Fei-Wor, So-Oily, Hou-Yao-wor where everyone just happily pitched in.

Other than tantalizing mains and starters, Pick N Brew serves gourmet coffee from around the world too. I took up Jackson’s recommendation, Columbia Bean that is known by its mild and delicate flavor served in Mocha Pot. In many Italian homes, they use mocha pot to prepare a cup of good strong coffee.

I think our dinner outing really does has FUN written all over it. Everyone unanimously agreed that the food was great as the combination of ingredients and presentation are stunning. Over the dinner, we pretty much had some good laughs and some pensive moments on life (and cars) as well. Lastly, my warmest gratitude goes to Jackson, who makes us feel home.

Chef Bao @ Essence, Hotel Imperial, Kuala Lumpur

visiting_chef_michael_huyhn

It was my first time to the newly refurbished Hotel Imperial (Hotel Sheraton Imperial formerly) upon an invitation from Food Street. The revamption has brought to us a not only a whole new luxurious hotel, but also a hot spot for the epicureans – Essence.

We were seated at a table set amid lush greenery that makes one feel like being in a suspended garden. Taking a few steps more reveals a whole new dimension – a dimly lit place brightened by colourful cushions, eccentric neon lights and sleek red walls. The all day dining restaurant offers ala carte as well as international buffets to tantalize one’s taste buds.

Those seeking a tasteful, culinary adventure are sure to find it in the restaurant’s exciting spread of buffets. However, my sole purpose here was to meet Michael Huynh (aka Chef Bao). He was making his first appearance here in Malaysia to share with us his unique culinary experience featuring a special taste of Vietnamese cuisine, but with a twist of New York.

Fusion ya mean? Many have been arguing whether globalization is good for the earth or the economy, but I’m pretty sure that the influx of various foreign flavours has definitely enlivened the gastronomy world. Chef Bao is daring in introducing bold flavours or new ideas in his cooking. He brings together ingredients from different cuisines in imaginative juxtapositions, through the methods of preparations and presentations.

Lamb nem on lemongrass skewerSpicy beef and pomelo

Tamarind tomato gazpachoPan roasted quail

From Top Left

Lamb Nem on Lemongrass Skewer (RM34)

Lamb Nem on Lemongrass Skewer arrived in an eye catching display. Tender pieces of lamb are cooked on a lemongrass skewer and drenched with a delicious home made satay sauce. The side of star fruit, red onion and orange in kalamansi vinaigrette was really appetizing as well.

Spicy Beef Cube and Pomelo (RM30)

Alternate layers of beef cubes, pineapple cubes, and pomelo slices are arranged alternately on a ring of pineapple. Intensely spiced, sharp and tangy, the beef cubes have won our hearts over.

Tamarind Tomato Gazpacho (RM26)

In the mood for something light yet flavourful, we opted for the chilled Tamarind Tomato Gazpacho. The cool, seasoned tomato soup is served with huge slabs of marinated bay scallop and garnished with diced grape tomatoes and pineapples. Thinking of this sourish cold soup makes me shallow my saliva again and again.

Pan Roasted Quail with Duck Confit, Quail Egg, Sweet Soy and Daikon Hash (RM40)

Tender, slightly sweet and delicious, the quail meat is simple and satisfying because it is done perfectly. I love the flavourful duck confit, the delicate quail egg, the daikon hash (raddish cake slices) and the sweet soy sauce which did a good work in tying all the flavours together.

Fermented bean curd lacquered roasted black cod

Fermented Bean Curd Lacquered Roasted Black Cod with Heart of Palm Puree (RM65)

An unusual twist from the usual miso cod fish, the immaculate square fish slice is slathered with creamy sweet palm puree. Credits to the chef for the perfectly cooked fish, it was succulent on the inside and crispy on the skin.

Ginger honey crispy barramundi

Ginger Honey Crispy Barramundi (RM65)

It was spreaded with a generous serving of caramelized endive, cherry tomato and sausage herb vinaigrette. The seared barramundi’s delicious crispy skin reveals flaky, succulent, tender meat. A lift of fork is enough to set the fish flakes apart.

Lemongrass crusted lamb chop

Lemongrass Crusted Lamb Chop (RM70)

I was attracted to their diminutive appearance on the plate, like little meat lollipops. The lamb has very intense flavour of lemongrass and fantastically delicious. The pears add a note of fall and match up with squash for sweet, full-flavored gravy.

desserts

While the freedom and creativity lies on the chef’s palate, we had a great satisfying Vietnamese meal, fusion Vietnamese meal to be exact. Do jump at the chance to savour on Chef Bao’s cooking with a modern riff before 13th April. You’ll eat so well and drink so deliciously you’ll forget your whereabouts.

I admit, I was skeptical towards halal dim sum, why would anyone want to pay so much for halal dim sum when the real thing is easily available? However, everyone, including our Muslim acquaintances deserves a fair opportunity to enjoy these tantalizing and dainty little goods that “touch your heart”, literally.

I was so glad that I tagged along for lunch at Restaurant MinMax, a halal Chinese place that comes highly recommended by my boss. A glance through its extensive menu offering various Chinese dishes and dim sums was enough to my salivary glands into overdrive.

The dim sum was decent, a somewhat hit and miss to be exact, but it is definitely a restaurant to return to again, considering the price that we paid for (approximately RM 17 per head) because a halal dim sum affair at hotels would cost a boom anytime.

Aunt Yong Pan Mee House @ Seri Kembangan

P1210650

This is a new pan mee place that we discovered recently, credits to KampungBoy’s friends who stay around Seri Kembangan area that brought us there. Only complain is that the waiting time is inevitably long due to the large crowd. To make thing worst, Aunty Yong, the patience possessors, keep cooking, stirring, and tossing around the orders of pan mee ONE after ANOTHER. The serving staff is kind enough to warn you about the waiting time each time we sat down, “30 minutes, are you OK with it?”, we do walked off a few times when we just wanted a quick lunch, but some other time we would just stay and wait patiently, whilst browsing through the newspapers that we brought along.

P1210677 copy

The noodles are handmade from kneaded flour on the spot. You can only have your order of noodles in soupy version, but with different flavors and ingredients, such as seafood tom yam, mushroom & pork, smooth pork (huat yuk), etc. Other than that, we are given a choice on the noodles – to be torn by hand into bite size pieces, or to be slice into thin/fat strips. Mushroom Pan Meen (RM 3.50). It’s not just your average bowl of soup noodles, the mixture of crunchy ikan bilis, scallions, pork slices and mushroom in the simmering hot pork broth was awesome! The strands of homemade noodles are cooked to perfection when they are soft but still chewy.

P1210664

Huat Yuk Pan Meen (RM 4.00). Another variations of pan meen, with additional servings of huat yuk (tender smooth pork slides). The pork slices is well coated with a mixture of tapioca flour and egg before aunty brings it to boil.

We wrangled the slippery noodles with chopsticks, dipped them into the bright green colored hot and sour dipping sauce and slurped – which is considered as a taboo in the West but is perfectly acceptable and indeed a norm over here.Great food that comes with a low price (less than RM 10 for 2!), what more can you ask for?

Updated: standard has been deteriorated ever since, we have got comments complaining about the ridiculous waiting time (from 30 mins to 60 mins!)  and tasteless / very salty soup from time to time.
